I'm guessing that alot of people on this forum actually know each other in person and possibly know their real name, so I'm thinking that there would still be defamation issues involved, although more complex
Sure, but in most cases the impact of any defamation would be limited to the few people who know identity of the defamed. Cases that would clearly be actionable are one where a poster's true identity is well known (and with no real attempt to obscure it) and that person, say, runs for the Board. Others make posts saying that X was caught doing Y. Absolutely a potential defamation case. But insulting someone in front of 5 or 6 of their mates is less likely to get a run (it's no different than doing it at the pub).
