Exactly. The only reason politicians ever pander to the rich (a small and unpopular demographic) is because they know the rich drive the economy. Not the government.

That and the fact that the wealthier people will have more of an influence on the politicians post-'retirement' options.....and have a greater ability to get their opinion across to the masses (whether disclosed as opinion or not).

You know 'the rich' are in competition with each other, right Barry?

Of course. Competition is something I do know about. But it's rarely perfect competition, and frequently a long way from it. There's a long history of co-operation (legal and otherwise) for their collective benefit. But regardless, I don't see the relevance to my earlier post, which simply pointed out that politicians may perceive greater future benefits in appeasing the interests of the powerful, than helping out Strebre Average, or Despina Pauper?

Is it possible for policy to benefit the rich and the poor? Or must the rich get hosed in order for the virtuous victims of capitalism to prosper?

Yes. No. I have not made any statement directly concerning either of those questions.

Some policies make the pie bigger, and most people share in the benefits ( but to varying degrees). Some policies may not change the size of the pie, or arguable reduce it, but significantly affect who gets the biggest slice. Other policies make the pie bigger but distribution of gains is such that significant numbers of people are made worse off. All are logically and practically possible.

Some handy household advice for members. If you're in the habit of keeping partly finished bottles of wine to use in cooking, don't accidentally put one of those bottles in the fridge a few weeks later and pour yourself a glass. More effective just putting the vinegar in the fridge.

I don't think anyone ever partly finishes a bottle of plonk, Barry. The volume of the bottle decides when you stop drinking.
