You could hardly call it a "plot" when the polls (public opinion) are massively against the PM and point to a lot of back benchers losing their marginal seats.

Spill defeated 61-39.

Abbott needs to work on his poll results now otherwise he's dead man walking.

PS> Also needs a strong result in NSW. Obeid & Co should have ensured that.

Realistically speaking, how is he going to work on his poll results?

He was drastically unpopular when he BECAME the PM. Knighting the Duke just illustrates how far out of touch he is. I cannot see any way he could make himself more popular, short of handing out $1k to everyone in Australia - although, despite that working for Kevin Rudd, I think the Australian public is now wise to such a scheme. I doubt we'd bite on the same lure twice....

Well he's got to work that out himself. First he has to survive another party meeting tomorrow. Some are saying that the the result today will actually cause more to peel off.

In the meantime, we can all enjoy Tony today. After all he's made saying the same thing twice, saying the same thing twice, cool again. He's made it cool again.

Terrible result for abbott when you consider the Cabinet probably voted against it. 39 members of 102 can cause a lot of whispers and leaks. 30 was considered to be a poor result.

If you look at the vote. He's PM still by only 12 votes.

Probably not entirely correct, this was a vote to have a vote for the Libs leader - just because someone voted for the spill doesn't mean they will vote against Abbott for the leadership.

Abbott should have just let the party have a vote for the leadership.

funny. if a pollie won an election or was ahead in an opinion poll by a 60-40 split (similar to kevin 07) it would be referred to as a landslide.

that said it's not a good look for a government to not whole-heartedly support their leader and i think it would take a miracle for the current government to get re-elected at this point in time.

Welcome to the brave new world. Political division is the new normal and 60% is a phenomenal level of support.

Merkins who wanted Australia to be more like Europe have got it as far as politics goes. The economy is next.

That's really funny.
