I was always so impressed when I travelled to Europe in '91, '95' '96 and '98, that in certain countries, you could just walk into our equivalent of Woolies (ie. Le Jumbo in France) , and there'd be an alcohol isle amongst the soft drink isle and cereal isle.

Great stuff, and just another example why this country is so far behind the times.

As Gronk said, there's no binge drinking culture in these countries.
We are so stupid.

LOL. We might be, but to ease your fears, I meant us, as a country.
Australia is stupid. And we are so far behind the times it ain't funny. Yet, those that don't travel to other parts of the world don't realise how backwards we are.

Oh, Look!!! We have an Opal Card now. We have modern technology.
f**king lol.

And in some you can just buy beer / wine in vending machines (and not necessarily in licensed premises). Though, that's probably taking things too far.

Where you are allowed to sell liquor legally in Australia has as much to do with history of the big brewers sealing off their market from retail competition before the Trade Practices Act, as anything else. For many years, the only way to get an off-license, was to own an on-license, and the number of on-licenses was fixed by regulation. And the brewers owned or otherwise controlled 90% of the pubs.

Yep. I know. And it was a backwards policy, by a backwards society.
Simple.

I quite like it.....but never, never over do it....the worst hangover (think 'i can't feel my hands and feet') of your life.

There's cyanide in all apple seeds, which doesn't generally hurt us as the inside of the seed typically doesn't get digested and the dose is tiny anyway. Habitual, hard core, scrumpy drinkers have developed problems from the cyanide (as well as the alcohol). I used to run a pub for a short while in the SW of England.....some truly sad cases that I wouldn't serve....but they could just go straight over the road and get their fill.

Some truly great scrumpies can be found in the West Country.

There is no doubt that we live in the best country, but there is no reason why we cannot learn from others.

The US college drinking culture is something that we need to ditch.

No doubt some European countries handle the drink far better than us. For example I've spent a lot of time in Italy and never saw Gen Y at midnight pissed / vomiting in the gutter or fighting. So no doubt we could learn from them. It all starts at home.

No every culture has got it right over there either. From my limited visits to Serbia, they all spend most of their day tanked. No wonder they are struggling with a stagnant economy. Productivity must be woeful.

Would a lot to do with this be our lack of population? Just like NZ is even further behind. ( mate over here was telling me there is this new movie out with special effects turns out it was terminator 2 )

No it's because we're free in a way that Europeans are not. Unfortunately being truly free means free to make an absolute merkin of yourself.

I lived in the States for 3 years. There have actually been 5 terminator films released. Hopefully you'll get to see them all at some stage.

How f**ken terrible is customer service, you go shopping and expect some advice yet you are helped by a 15 year old who has no f**ken idea (they try hard enough but). No wonder retail is losing sales to online stores. Why both going shop when the experience is just as good online without leaving your home ( and it's normallt cheaper)!

Depends on what you are buying, I guess. Some things, I would be prefer to check out in person. Also, if you are surly enough the 15 yo get scared and leaves you alone.

Unless someone knows their shit then I would prefer that they f**k off and let me browse. I suppose the guy/girl that knows their shit would prefer that I hurry up and buy something and then f**k off...
