The Bunker

Ding ding ding.

Didn't Patten cop a spray off archer after using common sense on a possible obstruction last week in the storm v warriors game.

Yup, so the remark Patten will be looking for a job is a joke. He probably feels ill calling some no tries, but those are the parameters he has been told to adhere to.

So you want the alternative which is the bunker /ref has to subjectively decide if a defender was so impeded it effected play? How's that going to help, that opens up every decision to opinion. At least this way it is black and white. Impede a defender at all and it's a penalty.

The game got by just fine for 90 years without dummy runners!

If the defender is not being impeded from being involved in the play what is he being impeded from?

But they are and the bunker is getting it right. Both today's disallowed tries clearly the defender was affected from getting into a better position to defend. Yet the media still go off about it. You can't win. Black and white decisions they don't like because it isn't "common sense", subjective decision left to the guy to decide they don't like because it isn't consistent enough for them. On this one the refs are just getting slammed for no reason.

You have a decoy runner go through the line and deliberately target a bloke, as was done by the Dragons today, and it impacts the integrity of the defensive line. It doesn't matter if the ball carrier runs through a few seconds later and the guy had an opportunity to get there, the fact is that much free running space wouldn't be there anyway if people in the defensive line weren't being deliberately taken out with the rest of the line having to adapt.

You have a black and white rule and we have actors like Jamie Lyon. I'm pretty sure that's not the first time Lyon has put on such theatrics and had a try being overturned.

No rule is perfect when it comes to decoy runners moving beyond the ball carrier into and into the defensive line. It's an area of the game where all teams are trying to gain an edge by pushing the obstruction rule to it's absolute limit.

It really is getting to the point of ruining games and the image of the NRL in general with such highly technical rules only ever being applied during scoring and never anywhere else on the field. In this case I'm not sure it's something that can ever be fixed to anyone's satisfaction unless the rules around decoy runners are dramatically changed.

The two no try calls were 100% spot on. First one, Dragons player initiates contact on Shaun Lanes outside shoulder, Lane is trying to cover from the inside but can't Quite there. He gets an ankle tackle in, but it was that hold up in the defensive line that Widdop took. On the second one, the Dragons decoy makes a beeline for Ryan Hoffman who is in the defensive line looking to move up and across, contact is initiated, and instead of a straight line defensively that has pushed up, Hoffman is stopped and is behind the line presenting a staggered line and a gap which Marshall exploits. Clear obstructions both of them. Denied clear cut opportunities to stop thenDragons attackers well short of the advantage line let alone the goal line.

I watched 1986 Parra v Canterbury semi on Friday. In addition to the superior footy being played, the flow of the game and the quick, decisive refereeing was very noticeable.

The commentators didn't have time to carry on like pork chops, they were too busy calling the game which only slowed down for injury or tries.

This is your answer

No friggen video refs - just well trained ref's making the best call they can. Even when the ref makes a mistake the game has moved on and the commentators move along with it.

This analytical overkill has spoilt this once entertaining game. :x

Using the Dragons no tries as a point of reference, how the f**k do the Broncos get awarded a try with a clear obstruction?

Tony Archer must go.

The Home teams are getting the bunker calls in their favour aswell as referees calls on the field..Saints should have been given the 2nd non try..

The Bunker is making more and more mistakes like yesterday's game the Raiders player was defiantly inpeaded and should not have been awarded a field goal, but once again the home team got the decision go their way..Bloody disgraceful!! I can't believe they are making so many mistakes it's ridiculous!!

Pretty much this. People can moan about how the game was better without the video ref and flowed better but that was all before you had commentary teams focused on looking at a replay and analysing it to death.

If we had no video ref in this day and age any time the on field ref got a call wrong it would be plastered on newspapers, replayed galore on tv from all different angles and people like Gus would not shut up about it.

The incorrect calls in the past were missed because we had half the cameras on the field and getting replays on demand in a timely fashion was a pain in the ass.

The advancement in technology has well and truly seen that the issue has flown the coup and you aren't getting it back in.

When the greatest tension for live crowds is staring at a screen with a KFC ad waiting for a graphic to appear you have a problem.

How you get the graphic to appear and whether it is done randomly, by a fool in an office interstate or by the wizard of oz doesn't really matter.

The use of the bunker this afternoon to keep Brisbane in the contest was disgraceful. Get rid of this current terrible system and go back to the video ref. We're currently getting more incorrect decisions than in previous seasons.

Go back to the backyard rules. No refs, just mates being honest.

Player 1: "Yeah no try, I knocked that on, sorry guys"
Player 2: "You sure? Looks like you grounded it bro"
Player 1: "Nah bro, complete separation and pretty sure my leg was in touch"
Player 3: "Your leg was fine but it was a sloppy play the ball leading up to it"
Player 1: "Ahh my bad, sorry fellas... handover then I guess".

If every one was prepared to cop the 50 50s we would not be where we are today. Coaches bag the refs to take away from inept performances, commentators are an absolute disgrace. Is there another sport where the people who owe their living to the game just bags the shit out of it constantly? Get rid of the video ref, empower the onfield refs, crack down hard on players who run in and badger the ref, call players by their number, try and instill a bit of respect for the refs again. Somehow try and shaft the phil goulds of the world. Nrl take away their media pass or something. Ideas?
