The Bunker

If the Broncos won today I could only imagine the shitstorm that would of eventuated!

In saying that, the outrage on the part of Gallen et al. would simply be used to deflect from the fact their second half performance was shithouse. If you are up by 22 at the half I don't care if the ref calls a penalty for picking your nose, a single call (right or wrong) from a ref did not cost you the game.

The use of the bunker this afternoon to keep Brisbane in the contest was disgraceful. Get rid of this current terrible system and go back to the video ref. We're currently getting more incorrect decisions than in previous seasons.
Sorry, what's the difference between the bunker and the video ref? They're both the same thing, at least from the perspective of the way they function during a game.

The bunker itself is also a step forward in at least adding a bit of professionalism to the way the video referee and the match review committee operate. All of the officials now have access to the full video streams from each individual camera in real time. This was previously solely the domain of the broadcaster. I remember reading something about match review committee officials using a Foxtel IQ to review games. Now they do it in real time during the games with access to every angle, or at least that's what I remember the intention being.

Another positive for the bunker is that it allows them to use less staff which should result in a bit more consistency. Personally, I would see the role of the video ref being a full time job. I'm not sure why the exact same people aren't officiating every game, every weekend.

If the Bunker found they had to report a missed shoulder charge why didn't they find a 'missed' crusher tackle in the same game . . . neither was less obvious, less obliquitous, less insignificant . . . maybe the shoulder might have been more meaningful to people who desired a game changer

The game changer was the Sharks letting their lead slip not a single bunker call. Players and coaches are using calls like that to hide their of deficits.

Thanks for the info and although I'm not in the habit of excusing teams, merely pointing out a bunker deficiency, I do appreciate your . . . super vision

So you admit the call was wrong then ?

I see it as a 50/50 (it was a shoulder charge, although I would of liked to see it as play on). Who ever is on the losing side of those kind of calls simply blame the refs as the excuse for losing; as if a single call a ref makes influences the game more and the hundreds of calls players and coaches make prior to such as call.

It is the art deflection and simple minded fans fall for it and are 'outraged'.

Another issue for the bunker (and the previous video ref system) is the camera feeds they get are interlaced so the image quality is complete garbage when slowed down frame by frame. Just watching a Manly vs. Knights game from a few weeks back and there was a video ref decision where they make a decision based on a still image where because of interlacing effects you could see the ball in two places on the screen.

That's a broadcaster issue though. It's 2016 and I don't think anyone yet has implemented true FullHD 1080p50 broadcasting.

No they haven't. Pretty much anywhere in the world. Bandwidth is a major issue and with the newer codecs that make this possible, reception and transmission equipment will be a problem. 1080p might be coming but don't hold your breath anytime soon

How does the bunker get its vision. The HD trucks have 1080p / 4K vision mixers, whether they can output at that resolution I don't know. And how the bunker gets that vision is another thing. Satellite/fibre etc.

It might be 1080p in the bunker. Do we know it's not.

The Stink is back.

The problem with The Bunker making the call on the shoulder charge yesterday was that the referees called time off, when no one was injured, and stood there delaying play while waiting for The Bunker to have a look.

That's not on in my book.

Did anyone really expect the bunker to improve the result of decisions made by officials?? It's still the same guys behind the screens making the calls. I've always thought the best we could hope for was a faster turnaround on the actual decision (right or wrong); which I think we have seen on the hole.

Getting the rules and preferred interpretations right in the eyes of all stakeholders is another thing altogether. As is then getting competent personnel in the chairs to execute the correct calls as well.

PS - Hole (not whole) was intended :p

Just about every game we are going to see why it is a terrible idea for the bunker to intervene in general play.

Judging from the Manly vs. Newcastle game they were definitely dealing with interlaced input. They were using a still image and the combing effects were clearly visible.

1080i50 and 1080p50 have pretty much much identical data rates when compressed, but it's the uncompressed stream on the production side where bandwidth really matters.
