The bottom line is if they were truthful in the beggining and not try to score political points on this issue, this thread would not exist.

Well no, the bottom line is that if these parents werent neglectful of their children, the government wouldnt have had to deal with the issue.

these photos were of children in the sea

sort of a moot point really
The photo that Peter Reith produced?
They were of a different event... as was later revealed.

The photos were dodgy.

So you do concede that no children were thrown overboard?

I'll concede that I don't care. And neither should anyone else.

Do you concede that these people showed horrific neglect of their children?

They showed tremendous devotion to get them to a better place.

Bravo

Swimming around in the middle of the ocean is a better place?

Jeez, I'm glad your not my father...

Is a better place than...

Afghanistan.

And you know what - they got here in the end, and before their country was blown to bits by cluster bombs too.

A key United Nations clearance expert has expressed concern about the similarity of the coloring of the yellow BLU-97/B cluster bomblets and the small yellow food aid parcels being airdropped in Afghanistan, noting that people are being encouraged to pick up the food parcels, but that picking up a bomblet would be lethal. He said, "Our experiences show us that children and youths were highly susceptible to the submunitions…. It is highly likely that many in Afghanistan will not know the difference between aerially delivered food aid and aerially delivered munitions."

"Many bombs were dropped in residential and other populated areas and the Mine Action Centre is doing their best to deal with all the emergency cases. However, they do not have enough human, logistical and other necessary resources to clear the region effectively within an acceptable period of time." (Médecins Sans Frontières website www.msf.org, January 18, 2002, 'Cluster bombs the legacy to Afghan population')

SIEV 4 sank after it was sabotaged. 76 children ended up in the middle of the ocean as a result.

'Do you deny this?'
Really?
Where's your link that the boat was sabotaged?

Have a look in the CDF report for this incident. The Dept of Defence makes no mention of sabotage.

So because these people fled a regmie you admit to have been evil (to bad about all that US funding chanelled through Pakistan)...because of this the government has to lie and mislead the public?

That is the biggest stretch in political history!

No shire the government has to deal with all types of issues. Its their job. If they were truthful at the start this post would not exist.
What about people who are neglectful when they drive causing accidents, the government deals with it, its their job. The government deals with neglectful people every day (some wqithin its own ranks), it should have no bearing on wether the government deals with it honestly or not.

these people did not board a boat in afghanistan as they would have had some difficulty there

they travelled past a dozen countries - obviously well funded to do so - to board boats in indonesia in order to avoid proper application procedures from many other less well off more needy genuine refugees

Just because the people from the Navy say that they didnt see kids tossed overboard doesnt mean that no kids were tossed overboard

I am amaxed that the Right use the defence forces to sheild themselves when required but pump up the supportive rhetoric at other time.

Pvt Whittle, the woman pictured rescuing people from the sunken boat, relays how disappointed the defence forces were at the governments blaming of them over this. They felt betrayed and they were - so too were the Australian public.

No, and it's in another thread because it's another topic. This thread is about whether John Howard lied. That quote has nothing to do with whether he lied.

Are lie detector tests considered as conclusive evidence in a court of law?

Jenny McKenry is not a lie detector test. She was the head of defence public affairs at the time.

I'd doubt Howard would lift the gag but, if by some miracle he did, it would certainly go a ways to resolving this most contentious issue one way or the other.

Still, the speculation can't be doing Mr Howard much good. At the very least, he is defending himself in the news and not selling the Govt's agenda.

The oftmentioned 'money ball' is right here.

Why does the PM not lift the gag if he has nothing to hide? :-k
