The whole concept being as many lengthy CGI fights as possible. Best Superman movie is hardly high praise. It's hard to make the world's least layered superhero interesting, but the movie barely tried.

How do you take a villain seriously when he gets beaten up by a scientist in the prologue?

I though Man of Steel started well, but dragged far too long during the destruction porn third act.

Superman being a murderer and all that destruction of Metropolis just seemed wildly out of character also.

The trailer for Superman v Batman seems to be making Superman out to be the villain also, its like they are scared to make a bright positive movie about Superman.

I reckon its not a patch on the Chris Reeves Superman

That was my feeling too, Canard.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds of the movie. Cavill was a fun Superman. Not a huge fan of Russell Crowe being able to go toe to toe with the guy we're supposed to buy as a threat to Superman, but it was all still quite fun.

Then it just became a bunch of CGI 'destruction porn' and it lost me.

I kind of dig that Superman is being portrayed as potentially villainous, though. I mean, why would we trust a guy who is both an alien and essentially invincible?

But there's so much more to Superman than just the Reeves version, the comics can get darker than what most people are used to.

Also Superman killing someone isn't entirely out of character, it happend in the comics. A positive upbeat superman movie has been done before, so a darker version is risky but it will be based on Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns which is pretty awesome

Thats a funny thing to be hung up on. Jor-El has always been more than just a scientist and MoS looked to have made Krypton a more militarialistic society than the source material so it fits that he could hold his own. Lets not forget that on Krypton, Kryptonians are no more powerful than humans are on Earth

I too liked the darker nature of Superman in these films. Ive never warmed to Superman as a character and felt that someone of his power, facing off against men like Zod, would lean towards the nastier side of his personality in reality. Im guessing the worlds population blame Kal-El for Zod even coming to Earth, hell Zod said it himself, and the destruction caused just gives the mob more motivation.

I do agree that the fight scenes were over done though. I also thought the same of the final battle in Avengers too.

To fans of the comics, who know about the Kypton society, that's all well and good. To people who are new to the mythology (most cinema goers), it doesn't make your villain seem particularly ominous when the hero's dad stuck with him in the beginning of the film.

Sorry mate, but I just dont get that. The movie clearly made out Krypton to be a martial society so having Jor-El an experienced fighter as well as thinker is not much of a stretch

It's hardly my biggest gripe with the movie (the final third was what spoiled it), but it's basic story-telling. Your villain needs to be a threat. The T-Rex in Jurassic Park doesn't nearly lose to a stegosaurus in the opening. The Joker doesn't get roughed up by Gambol. You didn't see Darth Vader being slapped around by Storm Troopers (and when he did get slapped around, it was to reveal the bigger bad).

The trailer definitely has a strong immigration undertone to it

Don't they even chant "Go home" in it?

I didn't say that it needed to match the Reeves Movie, just I would prefer it to be more like the 75 years of comics has generally been. Yes he may have "killed" in that time, but generally he is against it. He stands for truth and justice, whereas Bats is darker.

If this movie is based on DKR (which is a classic Batman story) then it's just another Batman movie with Superman as the Villain. I reckon that's a dumb move by DC. I hate how everything has to be shot at night and in washed out colour.

Also I hope your not saying that Returns was positive and upbeat. It made him into a mopey stalker.

maybe he should hide until the monkeys change their tune, lol. it's probably the religious nutters who started the hate towards him.

No, I wasn't saying DKR is an upbeat comic. I worded that wrong

My point is the upbeat, save the world type movie has been done before and DC can do it again, but that's what Marvel did with the Avengers. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but imo its only fun on first viewing.

Snyder has said some aspects of the movie will be based on DKR, and that comic is a classic for a reason, not only for its story but its comment on society.

lol comon

Jor-Els role in thwarting Zod plays a massive role in his reasoning for hunting down Kal-El and leading him to earth. Its key to the whole freakin plot
