We sell the naming right for each annual match to a corporate sponsor - another great revenue raiser for the day. They are lining up to be the namers of the day. Bit like the sponsors lining up to become Eels sponsors after the changing of the guard at the PDRLFC.
Plus we use the weekend as a get together for the Clubs 'Old Boys Association'..They flock back..another great feature of the match.

wow..that's fantastic!..

and you refuse to pay $70.00 for NRL club membership despite the fact that they could be fielding future "pie in the sky" players...

I assume they don't pay for their own rego?

Yeah, it is FANTASTIC.
Yep, I refuse to pay the $70 for NRL membership...
I don't need caps, bell and whistles and whatever stuff they have included in the package from their 'hard to sell items'.
The rego of the Pie in Sky is paid for by sponsors who get their sponsorship back 'tenfold'..That's why the sponsorship it is in huge demand....

. . .and that is the problem I have seen with this match for a long time. It isn't fair to the opposition in terms of the game. Hay gets massive sponsors, sponsors who name the day and pay for the Rego fees for these legends and I guess also the Transport and accommodation fees plus anything else to get the players there, and the Hay Magpies get a great gate for a day and a guaranteed competition points, it might even help out the for and against.

But hey, I am all for promoting the game, just never at the expense of fairness and competition.

As I said, I would love to see some of these players just out of the NRL join up into a few squads that would travel around all the clubs in the CRL and regional QLD, maybe 3 separate squads, and play a series of exhibition games across the state, giving to every club a great boost at a Home Bye week that would mean just as much to the clubs as the pie in the sky match, but not affect the competition.

I am against regional centres having access to sponsors, more players, bigger schools, better training and transport facilities, better employment opportunities, greater transport systems, bigger Leagues Clubs, but there is nothing I can do about it. I don't like the fact that we are a smaller community, isolated and have to travel long distances just to get teams a game. Like we have to travel 350km EVERY weekend to provide games for our 7s 9, 11, 12, 13,14 teams without the benefit of ONE home match for them.
There is NOTHING we can do about that...we have to cop it. Thats a benefit of living in a country community.
We promote the code the way we do for the benefit of the game here in town. Come down on July 3 and see the promotion for yourself. Fantastic weekend - a festival of football.
Love it, and we have bigger plans in store for 2011....

have you said that to the teams you deserted in group 17 or whatever it was...

I'd be more supportive of the concept if the game was an exhibition and NOT for competition points..I agree with MITS!

The opposition must not be too concerned if they are actually asking to play against Hay on this weekend. Perhaps the whole weekend has more significance to them than the 2 points. Maybe it is not for us city folk to pass judgement if we don't understand the situation fully. Don't crucify me, its just my opinion.

My old home town of Werris Creek could benifit from a weekend such as this.

that's fine 81236, but you also need to remember that we're hearing it from 1 side not the other, it's real easy for him to come in and say that everyone is in support of it when we don't actually know that..

I hope Hindmarsh is not assuming he will play in this game. I can't see them picking him because it is in Parramatta. I doubt he would be picked if they played in Robertson.

The decision to move Hay into Group 20 was made by the CRL Boundaries Committee..not by Hay Rugby League Club Inc.
Group 20 is a good strong competition with ex NRL players sprinkled throughout...
AND Stagger, as I have posted before in this thread, we don't have to please you or satisfy you or even appease your thoughts on the matter.
Next year (2011), we hope to have a couple of former North Melbourne players turn out for the Hay Lions AFL team, a couple of ex Wallabies in the Cutters lineup, as well as the League boys in the Magpies.
A cavalcade of sport, and it will sure put the town on the sporting map. Deni has the Ute Muster, Tamworth has the Music Festival, Bong Bong has the Picnic Races, Hay will have the Pie in the Sky Football Festival....
We have the players for one game, not the whole season and they are registered. cleared and everything is done by the book.
BTW, Matt Utai (with Brent Crisp) has been signed to play with Young, Daniel Wagon played with Gundagai last season, Adam Perry coaches Junee, Robbie Simpson (St George) played with ThreeWays United, Ben Jefferies (Titans) has been signed by Griffith Waratahs...
There is no embargo on a level of talent, and why should there be....
Just reiterating....WE LOVE IT...

and while you keep reiterating that you're not out to please me, you still continue beat your own drum like nothing else matters..it's pretty difficult not to comment about it when you continue to promote it in here.

We worry about what WE DO..not what everyone else does.

This is how Darlington Point/Coleambally saw its match against Hay last year.

“ROOSTERS AT PIE IN SKY DAY”

“Pie in the Sky” - a fantastic promotion for the Hay Rugby League Club. It’s the highlight of their year, old boys return to their old stamping ground, locals gather to support the black and white’s, former NRL players are invited to play with the locals, NRL players attend functions for the Hay club and mix with the kids, supporters, and sponsors.

You have the feeling that you have gone back in time, with a well maintained magnificent old grandstand set in a serene recreational area, car horns toot as the locals run onto the paddock, the home team cannot be seen at half time because they are flooded by spectators gathered around them listening and offering advice as to how to defeat the invaders to their turf and kids run wild after the main game kicking the footballs and putting their best hits on the goal post covers. It was the Roosters turn to visit Hay Park on Sunday where the weather was cold, the Rugby League hot and the steak sandwiches excellent.

The feature game of the day gave the big crowd plenty to cheer about with plenty of big hits and classic tries. The Magpies side had three former NRL first grade players included in their squad for the day. The Magpies controlled the ball a bit better than the Roosters with former NRL player Simon Woolford being in command of the ruck area and setting up play for the Magpie hole runners. The Roosters tried but could not spoil the black and white party.

When the game was done we all knew that this was not a trip back in time - this was 2009 at Hay Park. The ground announcer, who had his moments during the day, added his flair to the party atmosphere, the Hay players went over to the grandstand and waved to their fans just like on television, Magpie Supporters were there dressed in black wigs, faces painted, flags waving, drums beating, horns and whistles blowing and the grandstand rocking. Well done Hay, great day.

People in the bush are different to City people. We take NOTHING for granted. We know that to succeed in ANYTHING you must be prepared to think outside the square, and instead of saying "Why", say "Why not".
