The Kingdom for a Centre?

I don't think Roops was suggesting he play in the centres...he was suggesting Uate is the classy player for our backline, didn't specify a position! I tend to agree with him but as is the case with the current team we have, who knows what will happen as the plot will have a few more twists and turns over the next 12 months!

yeah, I think a few people missed the point entirely.

picture says a thousand words?

just not the right ones huh.

if Uate (and Fat Cooper) are considered 1st grade outside backs, we probably have things about covered, IF we keep doogs. Sau/Wes and Doogs first pick with Jim, Uate, Coops for wings or centre at a pinch (not Aku). thats 6 to go in to four, plus the dregs to cover.

yeah.. with the emergence of sau over the 2nd half of the season... we don't look so bad out wide anymore. a quality centre will still be a massive bonus and really give us venom out wide... however we may already have that waiting the the wings it seems.

to the best of my knowledge doogs hasn't re-signed yet has he? i guess it must still be a case of mystery centre vs doogs for the last of next years cap space.

mate we could do mystery centre plus doogs. the mad dog will stay for match payments. he just wants to stay here, and wants to keep playing with us.

its just smithy playing mind games.

if mystery centre is simmons i am deadset going to sh*t.

yeah.. i thought that doogs was already on match payments for the last 2 years? i know he loves the place and is quite happy just imparting knowledge to the young blokes and playing some footy. i mean you can tell he's just loving his life at the moment... always relaxed, calm etc.

would like us to announce his re-signing soon though... just to get it done already. i mean it isn't done until it's done... if you know what i mean.

I don't see this mentioned on the Herald website...? Or is this one of those one sentence things they throw in on the corner of a page to fill some space?

Anyway I agree I'd have Hodges here in an instant, but I don't think they'd sign Folau to let go of Hodges...

Wouldn't complain too much about any of the others, except perhaps the Cronulla centres as mentioned. The way Mad Dog is going right now he would be as cheap as chips (you would think still cheaper than Vuna/McManus/Uate?) and our backline could still do with some more experience next year. Lets just hope that if he does stay on he doesn't go to sleep and be injured for half the season like in the good old days :p
Hodges signed til 2011

Aku's defence isn't a complete lost cause.
He would actually be a very good defender in the forwards where people would run at him, because one on one he can put down just about anyone.
He just has the same problem George Carmont had when he came to firstgrade in that he doesn't have the instincts to know when to commit to a tackle.
All he needs is time in firstgrade and it will come to him, just like it came to Georgey.

took years for georgey boy to get it though roops.

having said that... aku is likely worth the wait.

the thing with aku for mine is that his attitude doesn't seem up to scratch. what's the deal with how slowly he always plays the damn ball? every time he's tackled he gets up like he's just been shot in both legs or something. it's little things such as this that i believe he needs to correct even more so than his defence. defence can be taught/learned... but those little things are often a lot harder to come by, and make or break careers.

Georgey was only really bad for half a season, then he was ordinary with a bad reputation so that everyone saw his defence as worse than it was for 18 months or so.
After that he was actually very good, and he is now one of the best going around.

i definitely agree that he's a very good defensive centre now roops. ordinary is still ordinary though... and he still had nothing in attack...

You didn't see St Helens play Wigan just recently, did you? Carmont scored the first try by putting a MASSIVE left foot step on Gidley, then barging his way over Wellens for the try.

he had nothing in attack while he was with us (i did say *had* didn't i?). in '07 i thought he had developed into a really good defensive centre.. with perhaps a mild attacking game... although it was certainly his defence that stood out above it.

haven't followed his career in england.. but by the sounds of things he's just kept on developing. good on him.

Why dont we let MacDoogs just play for another year, since there is no clear centre on the market and then maybe next year we make a big play for someone?

Sure that was impressive, but then he reverted back to his patented "run towards the sideline and pass inside to his winger" for the rest of the game.
