Refereeing The Magic Round sin bin directive

One of the few sensible things I heard over the weekend was fro the Channel 9 commentary team, post games, on Saturday night, and of all people from Billy Slater. He said at training, coaches are going to have to train players to aim lower when attempting to effect a tackle.

The era of aiming to wrap up the ball and hold up the player by the initial tackler may be on the way out, as it raise the margin for error of contacting the head.

So offloads galore with defenders left concussed from headbutting hips. Enjoy whatever the f**k sport that is.

I really think if magic round interpretations are here to stay, this is the thing they need to address. Leg tacklers needs to be given the opportunity to get to marker before a play the ball... How they do that? I dont know.

Maybe a variation of the old dominant tackle, where the ref can yell "legs" and that is a directive that allows the defenders to hold down a little longer to allow the legs tackler to get into marker

I like it. Let the legs tackler hold on and if old mate tries to play the ball and falls over, call it a knock on. Rewards good leg tackles without letting the attacker dominate the ruck so easily.

You prevent offloads with a driving hips tackle and getting them to the ground quick

You might be astounded to watch how the game used to be played before wrassling

LOL none of them know how to do that anymore without knocking themselves out though.

Radley is probably the best and he gets it wrong too often.

You gonna snap Junior Paulo in half and prevent an offload?

Why is Ponga style headgear not mandatory?

Serious question. Is it only effective in some cases? Are there risks associated with it?

The reason head rugby league head gear does not help with concussions is that concussion is a result of the brain hitting the inside of the skull due to sudden acceleration/deceleratrion. Whilst it may pad a high tackle, it does not stop that acceleration/deceleration, hence it has little impact on concussion. Most players say that the best it does is helps you avoid picking up head cuts.

Yep guys like Bunny Reilly, Ray Price, Johnny Raper. Ron Coote, Terry Randell, David Gillespie were players who had great tacking techniques who rarely went high. Tyhey hit you in the hips or lower and brought down the biggest and the smallest regardless.

Simple solution to play the ball issue

All tackled players to get up pick the ball up 1m off the ground

Before playing the ball

Anyone who does not do this has to either play the ball again or its a handover

Rothfield wants lines on the jersey so players know where not to tackle lol

Ben Ikin making a lot of sense and asked vlandys some pointy questions which got him fired up and his voice went all squeaky :)

this will go one of two ways. Either players can adjust and we will see no sin bins and ruined games OR head highs are inevitable regardless of crackdown and the game is in strife. VlAndy’s just basically declared the game will be dead if they don’t deal with it lol.

re the quick play ball one on one that will adept problem and also pa,yers these days are huge and athletic, good looking getting your arms around JT’s legs at full speed! Putting your head in there is going to see a lot more defensive concussions.

No idea where this will end up but it’s looking very likely we will see the end of RL as we have known it and we will see a continued watered down aggressive version in years to come.

maybe we should have everyone playing touch except professionals and they can decide if they want to put their bodies on the line for our entertainment and to earn the big dollars.

Didnt see some of them players but that wouldve been a joy to watch.

I recall seeing Gillmeister and Carroll making those sort of tackles and a bloke who didn't play rep football, Nigel Plum, was often feared by opposition players.

And the rules and interpretation absolutely must be completely changed between rounds 9 and 10 otherwise there will be no game in round 11.

sadly no one on nrl360 asked Vlandys why he waited till round 9 and didn’t bring this in during the off season,
