Try going low on a big forward like Asofa-Solomona, if it isn't a hospital pass in front of their face and they have time they just offload it.

The reason players tackle up near the arms is to wrap the ball up. You're not going to coach a team to let the opposition get easy second phase play.

I would argue that's exactly what PVL and co wants from the game with their apparent desire to have an insanely quick pace game, but that's that's a different matter all together

My simple point was that big hits dont have to be high contact. And there is no reason to fear we're going to lose big hits from the game. They'll just look differently and to @Valheru point, perhaps it will actually increase concussions

Again im not speaking to the unintended consequences of this, im just simply stating big hits can and will happen if they are stick with these changes long term

Interestingly the roosters V Broncos game was the 2nd highest rating game in Fox's history. Not bad considering everyone is supposedly switching off because of the crack down.

The rule changes to speed up the game were brought in after CH 9 wanted the game more exciting, declining ratings because games were being played at a snails pace had people turning off. Now the game is fast and open but games are becoming blow outs and that has people turning off. The NRL cant go back to having a slow game to make the scores closer, I think everyone agrees the game is far better now, so we need to hope the bottom teams get more competitive.

The NRL rates best when the teams with a big supporter base are on top of the ladder. A few years back when we beat the AFL in total season ratings it was when Brisbane, Nth QLD, South's and few others were doing well.

A bit off topic, but I guess I'm trying to point out the crack down doesn't seem to have people turning off, despite what dinosaur Gus Gould says.

You stay down. You go off for the mandatory 15 min HIA.. That will fix it

Exactly. Ive seen incidents over the weekend where blokes copped a "high shot", the opponent got ten in the bin and the player who copped the shot stayed on despite some concerns of a head knock

Now I get the whole concept but to say the game is looking after player welfare, well that's complete rubbish.

Didnt some clubs get fined a few years back for leaving a concussed player on the field?

I feel they are going to be focused on this crackdown but would probably forget about things like this.

There will be milking for sure.

As others on this thread have said the solution is simple.

A head high tackle resulting in a sin bin the player hit in the head must go off for a HIA
and
Reward legs tackles or 1 on 1 tackles with a dominant tackle, allowing the defender to hang on a few seconds to stop a quick play the ball.

Problem solved. Now we can move onto the next crisis :D

Souths have been doing solid to well for about ten years now, haven’t they? There would’ve been an initial spike in ratings when they finally came good after years in the doldrums. Same with Cowboys I would’ve thought.

Why do big hits need to be high contact?
Why cant a big hit be some dude just absolutely rattling some poor bastards rib cage and stopping him dead in his tracks?

Like anything the NRL likes to be seen to do something without doing it.

There is another motive to the crackdown but it isn't player safety

Fox ratings are deceiving. You only need to flick on the channel for even a few secs and it counts.

is that largely due to cheapness of kayo and the switch people are making to it from fta? You’d need to look at combined fta and ptv to get a true picture. You’d also want to look at peak audience and avg audience (which ptv doesn’t do) as I suspect the number of people switching off during a game is much higher this year.

The entire league needs to go to the Nigel Plum school of tackling, he only ever hit guys low and he always stopped them.
Beaver Menzies ran his own school and Jurbo graduated top of his class. There are plenty of great tacklers out there that have the technique down but there are other blokes who are smaller, don't have the right technique or for whatever reason can't do this and we've seen what happens to a lot of them when they try to go low and get their head in the wrong place. It will be interesting if we see an increase in concussions as a result of a change that is intended to reduce them.

Yes. Again i was not commenting on the issue of concussions. Literally didnt say a single word about concussions.
I was commenting on the idea that big hits would leave the game.

Alternatively, the NRL could stop changing stuff mid season and give the coaches and players a whole off season to try and adjust to any and all rule changes/ rule enforcement changes.

No shit blokes today will hurt themselves trying to tackle low....the vast majority of them have been taught from juniors to go high, wrap the ball up and slow the ruck.

Reward legs tackling, and the coaches will quickly encourage that skill, and train for it accordingly.

"Rabbitohs premiership hooker Isaac Luke blasted the crackdown in a Twitter post on Sunday, suggesting rugby league had become touch footy.

V'landys found Luke's comment ludicrous.

"I think that's a gross exaggeration and sensationalism," V'landys said.

"The game has to evolve. If it doesn't evolve it won't be a prime sport into future because it may not exist," V'landys told Weidler.

Well ok then.

Well ok then.

I thought Luke's post was more directed at the 6 again rule ? Why would a crack down on head shots mean you won't get tackled ?

The article hints at other reasons the NRL rushed in this crackdown ? Government intervention ? An impending legal case with former players ? The NFL had to pay out over a billion dollars, hopefully the NRL doesn't have to pay that much :[]
