Are ratings really going to be impacted by this?
I don't see the rusted on supporters switching off

depends on how long it goes on for. I’ve watched less full games this weekend than any other in last ten years as it’s become farcical.

There needs to be something which doesn't reward diving.

Maybe something like mandatory time off the field (10 min? or more) with free interchange if you are down on a reportable offence. This is to include sore necks.

Yeah, I just saw the Napa/Wallace one. Geez, that was a hard watch. It's so sad that that's where we are. And if we were to do a post mortem on other binnings, we'd find a few other which we just as cynical and symptomatic of a decline into a sport which we never wanted Rugby League to become.

Mandatory time off the field seems like the most sensitive way to counteract players diving. I guess the thing is that, the way the rules are at the moment, a hit like Vaughan's, or Lawton's, or Napa's is deemed (in the moment) to be a reportable offence- thus, earning the side a free interchange via theatrics.

DCE was penalised for milking a penalty earlier in the year. I'd support more of those penalties.

Well we seem to be getting lapped by AFL on ratings at the minute:

https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/05/friday-21-may-2021.html

Last 2 friday night footballs (so post rule change) are down like 20-30% in the previous 2 weeks

The ratings have nothing to do with the crackdown. AFL has been lapping league since forever.

Blow out score lines are the reason games are rating so poorly, soon as it becomes obvious who's going to win all the fans of the loosing team and neutral fans turn off.

We started the year outrating them. Up until a couple weeks ago we seemed to regularly draw 50-60K more viewers on FTA than we have the last 2 weeks.

we are still ahead of them on Foxtel but the gap is much less than it used to be.

origin ratings have been in steady decline for a few years. This series is really going to struggle to rate if game 1 gets shit on by these rules (which seems inevitable)

You can still put on a big hit without collecting someone's jaw. If you want to watch people get KO'd watch UFC.

All contact sports around the world have had crackdowns on tackling. The NRL is the last to do it. Every time it happens fans have a whinge and then get over it, ESL, Top 14, NFL..etc

As usual the NRL have gone the wrong way about things though.

Announcing this crackdown the morning after the final SOO last year where players had a good 4 months to adapt would have been too logical, instead let's do it a third of the way in the the season and expect techniques that have been taught and ingrained in players over their whole lives to change overnight.

The other thing is 10 minutes in the bin is too harsh a penalty in general in the modern game IMO. With the 6 again rule it is hard enough to turn momentum let alone when you are down a player. Alternatives that could work are a 5 minute sin bin, allowing teams to go back to 13 on the field if a try is scored against them within the 10 minutes (Can't be the binned player) etc.

So the ratings dropped before the crack down ? Ratings go up and down depending on who's playing, last Friday was St Geo V sharks, that's a hard sell to anyone outside the shire.

Origin ratings have been going downwards for years, there's no doubt that will continue again this season and people will blame the crack down as an excuse.

the crackdown started 2 rounds ago. Both round have been down.

they definitely go up and down depending on who is playing, so we’ll see if the trend continues over the next few weeks

no one will attempt a big hit if it can lead to a send off this easily. Farewell hard hitters and big hits in RL. Not sure what future highlight reels will be about lol

They could always aim below the rib cage.

I Just watched a few big hits from years gone by and they are mostly an inch from being a coat hanger. Morley for example was probably 50/50 with his shots being high or not. I remember him being sent off from the kick off in a test match for his idiocy.

Good luck stopping a rampaging 110kg modern day player by sticking your head and shoulder down at his hip height! Not to mention the quick play of the ball he will get from it. Or the offload from not being wrapped up top. But yeh in theory telling them to tackle low sounds easy right?
