The Music Appreciation Thread

My comment is in response to several posts made here.It comes from the viewpoint of a music appreciater who has little experience of being a music creator.
There has been much said about"talent" and Non Talent. What excactly is this and how is it measured? The comment was made that -for eg-Anthony on Aussie Idol has little talent. How do we know this? Certainly it seems it is not from some of his performances, because some of them have been praised by "experts".Maybe it comes from some of the "pop" songs he has sung in the contest. I recall some performances by the Beatles where they sung what could only be described as minimal pop songs (This is by their own admission) for the purpose of exposure..Does this make them no talents?
Maybe its because he is attractive. After all it is not possible top be talented and attractive at the same time
BY the way it has been stated during the program that Anthony in fact writes his own material,so it would be difficult for anyone who has not heard this to comment on his longjevity in the music industry.
I am not trying to say that Anthony is a super talent .I don't really know either way .But what I do know is I havent heard the definative answer as to why he isnt talented.
Oh and BY the way .Australian Idol is just that-search for an IDOL not the person who has toiled the longest and hardest to make it to where they are

Just to clarify...............or more likely confuse

I didn't say that he wasn't/isn't talented.
Of course he is talented, not one of the contestants is not talented.

My point was that he wouldn't win idol based on his musical talent, he will win it based on his marketability which includes his looks.
Record companies are very good at manipulating people to buy their music. Idol is basically a huge marketing/advertising campaign.
Any half decent singer with the type of exposure you get from Idol would be successful.
I'm not holding grudges against any of the performers, good luck to them, they are good and if they can outlast their profiles based on the show they will probably be very successful.

The exposure that the idol winner/contestants get is priceless, for example
one 30 sec prime time advertisement can cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, add the production costs of the ad and the costs to just have the product to sell etc etc
basically out of reach for any independant band/musician.
Record companies pay this kind of money and in turn receive a exorbitantly high percentage of the royalties from their artists product.
Idol contestants get all of this, as colonel said, twenty weeks of prime time bombardment, put a monetary figure on that :?:

I wasnt aiming my comments at any one poster Haynzy  But I feel that there is a general problem many people have with "marketable " people. As you said time will tell if these contestants are around in 5/10 years. But remeber that Anthony has also been in the industry for many years already -just like Guy.As far as I can see musicians use whatever advantage they have to promaote themselves and their music. It could be that the Pop image that Anthony displays is the toll he is using to get his foot int the door of a difficult industry.Who knows what else he has to offer

No worries sportive, #-o
I agree, and again good luck to him.
In my opinion Courtney is a much much better singer and performer but I will be surprised if he wins.

I don't have a problem with them being successful.
My band has been labled as too commercial many many times because we try to entertain and play music that we think people want to hear rather than sit in our bedrooms and play music for the sake of the art alone. Other musos often bag us but we don't play for other musos, we play for people who like our shows and our music and we get paid for it and we are busy

My gripe is with the record companies and the way that they market music, to the detriment of the art.

I think the commercialisation of many art forms can be both a problem and a blessing. If music is to be only for the purpose of selling then much of what is beautiful and talented can be missed.
However if music is to be only for those who "know " then it becomes elitist and most people never get to appreciate it.
This is the same for many other art forms such as painting, sculpture, literature and film
It's a dillema (which I have no idea how to spell

I completely agree with you Haynzy.

I've got absolutley no musical talent what so ever, but give me a group who have worked their butts off for years such as The Angels over the mass produced crap that record labels are telling me I have to listen too just to be "fashionable".

John Butler is an absolute musical freak

I've seen him live about 4 or 5 times, he deserves the sucess he is having

I've never seen anyone play the guitar like he does

Unfortunately in this series of Idol much of the better talent either didn't make the top 12 or went out long before they should have. Ngaire, the young Aboriginal girl should have been selected and the girl that went out first should have stayed much longer than Anthony, Haley and the girl that was selected as judges choice....

Its very selective and yes they are judged by "experts" but as has been seen even the experts have their favourites. Anthony IMO has little talent and little difference to 99% of the singers/bands that are seen in the Top 40 - he has performed one really great song and little else. Take Courtney - he has performed more often than not at a good to great level and will probably miss out because of his size and lack of sales potential...

I agree Colonel, Courtney is the best of what's left but I very much doubt that he will win.
The other tragedy was Angie, the 'big black sexy momma" in her words.
She had an awesome voice and was so obviously a very natural and probably, experienced performer only to be eliminated in the first final.

I might if I knew who he was?

Didn't he invent the mixmaster, or did he get the Noble Prize for Literature in 1922?

Dave Grohl is a musical God. Also long live the Screaming Jets, the best independent act going around IMO. Other top acts include Live, Pearl Jam, Shihad, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Whitlams, Grinspoon, Living End, Pete Murray, John Butler Trio, Butterfly Effect...among quite a few of my favourites

Also, I never realised it due to the relative crapness of Creed...but their now ex-guitarist Mark Tremonti is pretty awesome as far as contempory guitarists go.
