and look what has happened now..

The locals, insulted by the embarrassingly half-hearted Northern Eagles franchise, have completely turned and gotten into a rival code, despite the area's ruch history and junior problem in the game of rugby league.

I'm not anti rugby league guys, so don't call me an AFL/futbol troll OK. I can only shake my head at how poorly the game of rugby league is run at the top level.

If you lose a stronghold area like the Central Coast to futbol thanks to the Mariners, then The NRL & News Limited only have themselves to blame.

Seriously, these images of passion for futbol in Gosford FFS. As a huge futbol fan I'm naturaly shocked stunned and elated that the Coasties have bonded so much with the Mariners, after initial reluctance to get involved.

The Central Coast is a proud area. They like to consider themselve a society distinct from either Newcastle or Sydney. I can only shake my head in complete bemusement that they have turned to the World game to find an avenue to actually conceptualise that notion of Central Coast community pride that was obviously so lacking when the Eagles played up there.

How do you react to these images of Gosford decked out in Mariners Blue & Gold as rugby league fans? Rage? Sadness? Embarrassment? Are do those of you who live on the Coast not really mind, and want to get behind the Mariners in any case?

Am just interested in how you all react to the images you see on that URL.

I'm a football fan so it's good to see people getting behind the Mariners, but really, I think the NRL were right not to put a team there. People didn't show up when there was a half a team, why would they show up for a full one. The Central Coast has, or at least had, a reputation for being too picky as to what they would and wouldn't support, and the Northern Eagles was a classic exmaple of this. In other sports maybe you'd be able to get away with it, but not in rugby league, as you don't see people getting all that way about St George-Illawarra, who share games between Sydney and Wollongong, or the Wests Tigers, who share games between two wide apart parts of Sydney.

They average well under 10k, hardly ground breaking. Especially since they are the only professional team in the whole region and are actually winning games. Simply not good enough for the NRL.

But hang on, using that logic the Gold Coast should never have been considered- they wouldn't support a full team (twice), why will they show up for a third one? Remember as well that Illawarra, St George, Balmain and Wests already had a history as stand alone clubs and so naturally the supporters from those areas got behind the JV's, before the Nothing Eagles the Central Coast had no previous local team to follow.
Back on the topic, I'm a Mariners fan too and I think the way people here have got behind their team is a great advertisement for an NRL team. If this is the sort of support a Soccer team gets from the Central Coast, imagine how healthy a Rugby League side would do!

f**king get over Central Coast, i live up here and believe me no one gives a sh*t about either side!

How many of you people live up here?....their is absolutely no hype about the soccer side, no one knows about it.

No one wanted a league side because the league side & night life is more worth worrying about and the soccer side is been given very little encouragement, i've seen 2 shops up here with signs and both shops where smaller then a local corner fish & chip shop.

Get over it, it would've never worked, f**k me!!!!!!

The NRL are also neglecting Tamworth. They also don't have a team in the comp. The AFL are neglecting Tasmania.

Just because an area doesn't have a team in the national comp doesn't mean that area will reject the sport. The Central Coast is league land.

The NRL is holding its breath waiting for a sydney team to relocate up there, 1 could do so very easily as they've got a great stadium, good leagues club and through singletons connection probably plenty of sponsorship.

Theres always that $8 million carrot dangling from the NRL

Come on Souths would a 40 minute drive to the CC kill you or an hour on the train?

Wait a minute no one goes to their games anyway so it wouldnt make a difference, and just maybe the CC would keep on getting their 18k crowds doubling the existing ones.

Get up there souths you know it makes sense.

There is s simple solution.

1. NRL have the money - they're promising $10-20 million to any team to relocate to Gosford.
2. Singo's backing would make it financially powerful.
3. Stadium's terrific.

Why not put the CC Bears as they should have and bring CC and north shore back in. the too many teams argument is based on crap - of you're financial and the numbers are there, you could have 3 teams in one suburb!

Why are the NRL determined that the 1908 establishment club that instigated the Gosford stadium will not be back in the comp?

I beg to differ you've got the knights an hour away and then all the sydney teams an hour in the other direction, relocate one of the syd teams and its a better mix.

The bears are goooonnnnnneeeeee.

I would have thought that the blame lay squarely at the feet of Manly who had a licence and moved back to Brookvale or the CC public who failed to support a team when they had the opportunity.

If the NRL is negelecting the Central Coast why are their games scheduled for this year?

Of course the soccer have got good crowds, because its not even in the footy season. I think half the people up there couldnt give a toss about the soccer, theyre a strong Rugby League region.

The reason they didnt support the Northern Eagles mainly cause Manly took over the licence and everyone referred to them as Manly. And they HATE Manly.

Yes the Bears are goone, but theyre not forgotten. Their fans will no doubt continue to support them, and are hopeful of getting back in the comp and good on the fans for trying.

No doubt Manly fans miss them cause of they were their arch rivals, and their games pulled off big crowds and great clashes.

Good to see the NRL still putting games up there, its a great stadium.

Cairns has a team in the semi-finals of another national competition. Does that mean the NRL is neglecting northern Queensland?
