No chance for Hadley and co to go back to 2UE....Hadley has his own morning show and is on big coin there.

I would love a Voss / Gibbs / Alexander (if possible seeing he has fox commitments) radio show.
No carry on, or pathetic try hard comedians (like Gavin Roberston or Michael Slater)....just three guys who call it how it is with no BS

I was thinking the same thing. Those 3 would be about as good a team as you could possibly get.

That's confusing. You want no BS but you want Voss? Contradicting much?

Voss won't spend 5 hours talking anything but rugby league. The stupid songs will also be absent.

Voss, Gibbs and Brandy would be perfect.

They would talk plenty of league, but all three are capable of being naturally funny.

2ue - bring it on.

So where does the local significance come into play?

They do that now with ABC. Triple M through Austereo should be able to call every game live into regional centres when their team plays. FM works on trains, mobile phones have fm stereo's built in.

We need to get every game out there. Simple as that. Never again should we have the disgrace of GC v Penrith or Mel v NZ with no coverage whatsoever!

Re: The Regional stuff.

what might happen is 2UE and 2SM doing a sort of merger agreement in that 2SM have quite a large regional reach. UE would also broadcast via 3AW in melbourne when there's no afl on but the reverse is UE would play afl on the station when there is no league on.

It's all to be announced this week I think.

hopefully the rights are spread but know one really knows till its announced.

NRL open to more stations calling rugby league

More stations than ever are chasing Rugby League broadcast rights as the NRL goes into negotiations for next season. NRL Media Manager David Taylor has told radioinfo the NRL is “open to the idea of more stations” obtaining rights.

Taylor confirmed to radioinfo that the NRL has been in contact with AM and FM radio stations which expressed interest in rights.

Triple M is seeking more broadcast matches beyond its current Monday night games, 2UE has signaled it may bid for some games, and other stations may also be interested. ABC Radio and 2GB currently hold the main commercial and non-commercial rights.

The NRL is remaining tight lipped about the exact details of discussions and will not confirm when the deadline is for the negotiations to end. Taylor says the discussions will “be done when they’re done.” All current rights deals conclude at the end of this season.

Macquarie Radio chairman Russell Tate told the Daily Telegraph : "We have an intention to remain the rights holder. We would like to be and hope to be… I think it would be difficult with too many rights holders. This is different to AFL in Melbourne… We hope to retain the (exclusive) status we have enjoyed for the past couple of years."

The NRL would not be drawn as to whether it would link online and mobile audio rights with radio stations, as per the talkSPORT model in the UK (see our other stories), or if it would offer audio rights separately to radio broadcasters and online/mobile sites.

Rugby League rights deal close

The National Rugby League is believed to be close to a deal for radio broadcast rights.

As reported previously on radioinfo, the NRL is currently in negotiations with radio stations for the next broadcast rights contract.

2GB is bidding to retain its existing rights, although the NRL is keen to extend coverage further into regional areas and interstate.

Triple M is thought to be chasing more games, and is in a better position than in the past to offer regional cvoverage now that Southern Corss Austereo also owns regional stations in every state.

An alliance between 2UE and the Caralis Supernetwork is also a possibility, and could potentially offer more regional stations than 2GB, but not SCA.

ABC Radio is expected to retain its existing non-commercial rights.

radioinfo is following progress and will report the results of the new deal when they are announced.

The common denominator is Bill Barrington.

How I understand it, outside of metro:

Currently 2GB offer it to everyone who wants it in the bush - for very little money. So you cant get more stations than potentially every market. You just order it by the week from their syndication arm. No contract. The model is that its so cheap because you have to take embedded 2gb advertising, and they keep the revenue.

As per a few years ago, SCA has one station in South Australia, a handful of stations in Victoria (ballarat, bendigo shepp and mildura only who all take 18 hours of afl a weekend ) and no station in Canberra or NT.

Isn't 2UE still owned by Southern Cross?

If so it gives you FM and AM. The ability to call Knights games to the Hunter. Cowboys to NQ etc. That's what we need.

Love how he doesn't say how it's different. Just that it is so they should keep their exclusivity.

Or if he did say how it wasn't worth printing.

Like Ch9 starting with their "home of RL" ads during Origin III, no surprise to see 2GB up to the same dirty old tricks again trying to manipulate the ARLC into given them the rights.

As you just said, it's funny how he randomly says "this is different from the AFL in Melbourne" and then brushes that statement aside without saying how or why it's different, other than the fact of using the statement to justify why they should be given the (exclusive) rights on a silver platter again.

Also, his previous sentence "I think it would be difficult with too many rights holders"....well, take a look at Melbourne. They've functioned perfectly well with all the broadcasters covering AFL down there, why can't the same thing work in Sydney? (which relates back to my previous paragraph)

As much as I would love to be proven wrong on this, like Mr Saab, I have a very bad feeling that like Ch9 and Fox, the ARLC will bow down to the demands of 2GB and will not only subsequently be given the "exclusive" AM commercial rights, but furthermore 2GB will continue to blackout certain timeslots to ensure that not only other stations cannot cover them (e.g. 2SM with MNF in 2007), but RL supporters in non-metropolitan areas who don't have Foxtel/Austar will be screwed over like a seven fingered whore again.

The big difference between this and the TV rights though is the first/last rights situation.

That and the TV rights are actually worth something.

The biggest weapon 2GB have in retaining rights is the fear factor of their presenters turning against the NRL.

That has been somewhat diminished in recent weeks with the Alan Jones scandal.
