Oh and Luai has 40 try assists in his first 50 games. So thanks for the suggestion.
Luai plays at second receiver on their preferred open side, like Gutherson does for us. Drown plays on the side we set up on for the long shift. Very different opportunities on the two sides. It's not a coincidence that Drown is involved in fewer tries and line breaks since moving to the right. We really started using this shape last year and Moses found himself on the wrong side of the field and couldn't match his 2019 output where we attacked more from centrefield. Now he's playing Drown's role from last year and he is back with the try involvements.

The game is heading back towards the halves attacking on the same side of the field. The Bunnies often have their 7, 6 and 1 involved in the same shift play.
Perhaps so but our halves are getting around the same number of possessions and no one has provided evidence that one is doing substantially more playmaking than the other. From what I see it's about the same.

How many missed tackles did Brooks make in those 45 games?

What was his team's win percentage in those 45 games?

It's true that Brown has a lot of room for improvement, but he is a great defender (and not costing us any games), and our team is winning.
I'm not sure but defenders are cheaper than attackers and if any position is slanted towards attack over defence it's probably the halves. So yes Brown is a good defender but I don't think that makes up for the attacking deficit at this point. If he's not required to do any playmaking as some suggest then we don't need to pay the guy in his role so much.

Brown only had 5 try assists in each of the last two years. Now he has one in what, nine games? It's not much different.

It's more about when in the tackle count they are getting the ball and what they are trying to achieve when they get it. You might've noticed our left side attack looks a lot more potent than our right side, and this is true over two different seasons where we swapped which side the halves play on. Generally when Dylan Brown gets the ball we don't want it to end with a play-the-ball on the right hand sideline. This was also true when Moses got the ball last year. We are aiming to get a quick play-the-ball at most ten metres from the right hand upright. That's why you'll often see Matterson turned underneath, or Drown dummy and go himself.

When the left side half gets the ball he has very different options available. Quite often Sivo will end up with the ball (from Gutherson). If we don't score we will usually settle one back to the middle then kick.

You've forgotten the Eels supporters edict. There was a time when we thought he was going to be an integral part of our future to the promised premiership, but it's far easier to give him knees in the back. However, I do believe that if he takes his hiatus as a wake up call rather than banging on like a dunny door then there's an optimistic future for the lad.

Do you ever see Brett Kenny play ? He was a tackler, a runner and a backeruperer. His job was not to create TAs. that was Sterlo's job. Bert's job was to run the ball, back up and tidy up. Does Dylan need to follow the ball more ? Yes, @TheRam is right he does - BUT we have Gutho who does that job. Dylan runs the ball 100m per game, tackles and tidies up. He's really good at the stuff he does ATM and I'm confident that his game will grow and prove you f**kers wrong.

[BTW I'll lose my shit at the first merkin who accuses me of comparing Kenny with Brown FFS]

I hope so mate. I would be stoked, but comparing Kenny with Brown, you are kidding bro. You're delirious.

I dunno, I mean Moses had 33 try assists from 45 games in 2019 and 2020, and 10 from 10 this year. And last year Moses was not in good form. Yes it's gone up a little bit but sample size not great and it's not all that different anyway. So he was getting the try assists no matter what side he played, and Brown the opposite.

Brown
2019: 0.33 TA per game
2020: 0.28 TA/game
2021: 0.13 TA/game

Moses
2019: 0.96 TA/game
2020: 0.42 TA/game
2021: 1.00 TA/game

Gutherson
2019: 0.50 TA/game
2020: 0.77 TA/game
2021: 0.80 TA/game

This points to a distinct change in our structure in each of the past three years, which I think is obvious from watching. In 2019 Gutherson played right with Drown left and Moses in the middle. Last year it was Gutherson left, Moses right with Drown in the middle. This year Gutherson is still on our left side but Moses is now in the middle. We have also become a dominant left side attack over the past two years.

Doesn't that just say Moses is a better playmaker? That shouldn't come as any surprise. And because he does most of the kicking he is getting most of the last tackle try assists, regardless of his role in our shape.

It sounds like you've been watching football while sober.

Yeah the kicking would skew it a bit but didn't Drown used to do his fair share of short kicks? Anyway yes, the stats show Moses is a much better playmaker.
