considering this is the official indie rock thread, there should be mention of the best indie rock group of all time - the wrens. i mean, they are the ideal indie rock band too. they're kinda ugly, critically revered, were once offered a fat contract and knocked it back due to creative differences and most prominently, have released a ridiculously f*cking awesome album in the meadowlands. every single other album i've ever heard from pales significantly in comparison
my other fav indie band would be stars, though probably a bit too um gay for most. les savy fav is also a freakon mad band. and broken social scene. and i rate the shins as many others do. love pinback, pavement, blah blah etc

for this year, i'd rate the best indie rock albums as following:
stars - set yourself on fire
lcd soundsystem - lcd soundsystem
bloc party - silent alarm
can't think of any others i rate highly. most of my favorite albums this year have been rap. and i'd say the best album released this year is actually m.i.a. - arular
