Looks like recruitment and retention is an issue for the Broncos based on what Dearden's manger is saying in this article - https://wwos.nine.com.au/nrl/brisba...-s-agent-unloads-on-basketcase-broncos_280421
I heard some ex broncos boss carrying on about how Sam Walker should be a broncos because he was a Brisbane junior. That’s been a big problem, they just assume all Brisbane kids want to play for them, that hasn’t been the case in years. They didn’t even go hard enough for Walker so they missed out.

It was Barry Maranta who made the comment (source: https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/s...d/news-story/5028554d33ca4c058442dda3bb194e82).

The Broncs did try to recruit Walker, but had the recruitment meeting with Walker by himself. The Roosters when they made their pitch flew Walker and his family down to Sydney to show them around and talk to them all, and Sam Walker said it was that difference which saw him choose the Roosters (see this story in the Courier Mail - https://www.couriermail.com.au/spor...s/news-story/e780efabf85a693be897ca93f407f8da). Walker was unhappy he was forced to meet the Broncos alone.

you wouldn't mind sharing more details on how Broncos failed to sign Sam Walker?

I don't have much more than what I said above. The Courier Mail article, unfortunately is behind a pay wall, has a few more details including quotes from Sam Walker himself about how he was treated by the Broncs v how the Roosters treated him when both were chasing his signature.

I like how you write as if you were never a Brisbane fan, turncoat

Looks like Steve Renouf has been reading this thread. His weekly column over on the NRL's website covers many of the points that have been made in this thread - https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/04/29/renouf-the-five-main-areas-new-broncos-ceo-needs-to-fix/

Just came to mention that. Here's my thoughts on a few things he covers:

The Broncos were always a club that every kid in Queensland wanted to join. But now you read stories like Sam Walker – whose parents weren’t allowed to come to a meeting with the coach about his future – and you can see why he decided to leave that day and sign with the Roosters...The Broncos used to make up most of the Queensland Origin team. I know times have changed and there are now three clubs in Queensland to choose from, but Queensland’s best players should be Brisbane’s best.

The old days aren't coming back, where the Broncos were the only NRL team in the state worth taking seriously. The Cowboys have developed enough of a following from kids who might once have only aspired to play for Brisbane, and the Titans are looking like an outfit worth respecting. The addition of another team in Brisbane/ Qld is only going to further dilute the battle for hearts, minds and signatures. Having the best players in the Maroons team is going to come down to smart recruitment or luck. This "we deserve the best because we are the Broncos" entitlement attitude is half the reason Brisbane are up shit creek to begin with. Taking the entire state of Qld and it's homegrown players for granted is long gone. The board should've woken up to this at the end of the 2006 season with their exclusivity to SEQ gone. Instead they've been asleep at the wheel for the last 15 years.

The Melbourne Storm are the envy of the NRL for how they manage their salary cap. I know I bring up the past a bit, but plenty of Broncos players played for unders at the club and were happy to do that because they wanted success.

Lol. Sure. They played for unders at Brisbane because they really, really wanted to be a part of it. Just like Roosters players all went to Bondi Junction because Nick Politis is unparalleled as a golfing buddy...
