The Return of Gasnier?

He'll pull in ~$120,000 for half a season, $400,000 and $550,000 if the reported figures are true.

That's $1,070,000 for 2.5 years work, not exactly bad coin (or in simple terms $400,000/year)...

And how many are you going to have to lose for 2011 and 2012?

Given the squad the Dragons have, is this really the right move?

Does Gasnier give you better value than (say) Weyman and Smith, or Cooper and Nightingale?

The strange thing about Buzz's original 'exclusive' story is that it doesn't mention the fact that Gasnier has been told to look elsewhere from Stade Français because of consistent defensive deficiencies that did not impress Didier Faugeron and incoming coach Michael Cheika. Returning because of family illness is purely coincidental.
Well I find that hard to believe, no-one in RU can tackle anyway.

We're losing Saffy and Priddis next year, that's approximate $280,000-300,000 freed up alone. Great losses? Not really, we have the likes of King and Rein coming through the hooking ranks as well as Fien returning, and Saffy is easily covered.

We have no superstars at the moment, it gives us alot more room to move in the cap. We have quite a few depth players off contract over the next year, its tenable situation. Is it worth it? Well I guess we'll find out if we sign him and see if the club gets the premiership in the next few years.

Gaz would give our attack far more balance though, it'd also give us more depth in the forwards with Scott moving there. We'd have Scott, Young, Smith, Prior all 80 minute players available for the 2nd row/lock. With Smith having pretty consistent injury concerns it puts us in a much better position.

This is indeed an interesting situation.

Sure, I would give my left one to have Gaz back at the Saints, for all the reasons above.

But what happens from here.
1. Is Priddis definitely retiring next year?
2. We know that Saffy is moving.
3. Scott to the back row and I guess as a backup centre.
4. How does this affect Scott's SOO and test chances?
5. Would we keep Targive and Greenfield, not to mention Merrin and a couple of others mentioned on this thread?
6. How is this going to affect our opportunity to sign Josh Morris in a couple of years?
7. When does Fien's contract end? We need this guy as our no 1 hooker.
8. What will happen to Lett and Nightingale?

Just a few thoughts.

how is it a precedent?? players sign 1 year contracts all the time.

if St's sign him on a 6 month contact the NRL wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

hes a free agent.

A little different than a player signing 1 yr deals with different clubs mate..

Don't forget, this is the guy that walked out on our game to our major competitor chasing $$$. I would be filthy if we allowed him to come back to League for 6 months to fill the time before he hooks up with Rugby again.

Mark Gasnier the bargain Dragon

CHAMPION centre Mark Gasnier will return to St George Illawarra for the remainder of the NRL season at the bargain-basement price of $50,000, plus match payments.
The Dragons can only fit Gasnier into a second-tier cap designed for players outside the top 25 squad at each club - but his contract will be dramatically upgraded to around $400,000 in 2011 and $550,000 in 2012 with the possible addition of third-party payments.

The fact he is even considering playing for just $50,000 this year is the best indication he is returning for the right reasons - to win a premiership at the Dragons - and not just to build his bank balance.
On top of the $50,000 sign-on, the Dragons would pay him $4000 a game.

As excitement builds in the St George Shire and in Wollongong, Gasnier, 28, yesterday confirmed he is keen on an NRL comeback and said he would make an announcement "in good time".
Gasnier has returned to Sydney to be with his wife, Claudine, and her father, who has been diagnosed with cancer.

"I'll be able to talk about [my football future] soon," Gasnier said yesterday.

"Now isn't the right time. It's been good to get back, but obviously it's been under difficult circumstances."

St George Illawarra CEO Peter Doust said the Dragons were obviously keen to secure the services of their local junior and former captain.

"We have always said that we would be interested in having Mark back at the Dragons if he was ever to return to the NRL," Doust said.

"We have had discussions with his manager George Mimis and the NRL about the details of his possible return given his contract in France was finishing. It is a very complicated negotiation, the details of which have to remain commercially in confidence.

"Mark left our club on good terms and, as such, he agreed to a clause in his deed of release at that time about returning to the Dragons if he came back to the NRL, and we have always kept in contact with him since he left.

"In saying all this, however, an athlete of Mark's status and experience commands significant salary expectations and we are aware that he is attracting interest from several NRL and rugby union clubs."

Australian Rugby Union officials do not appear concerned about Gasnier turning his back on an opportunity to play for the Melbourne Rebels in the Super 15s, where he would have partnered Stirling Mortlock in the centres in a high-profile backline to launch the new franchise in Victoria."We've had no contact at all with Mark Gasnier's manager for over a week," spokesman Peter Jenkins said.

"We're quite comfortable with any decision he reaches."

Gasnier was guaranteed only $220,000 a season to play for the Rebels and would have to play in every Test for the Wallabies to make over the $400,000 mark.

So how can a player like gasnier go into the second tier of players? Also what is the cap restriction on this second tier? if he is making $4,000 per game and dragons make it all the way to the grand final he has the potential of playing anywhere between 15-18 games this season, say he played 18 (15 regular season games + 3 finals games) that is $72,000 + 50,000 = $122,000, how will that affect the cap???

1. Yes
2. correct
3. currently we have no depth at centre, much needed
4. He's out for 6 weeks so had no hope anyway.
5. Tagive, who knows? It'd be nice to see him play one day so we could assess him. Greenfield is on small money.
6. Josh is a left centre and can come back to replace Cooper who is on good money.
7. Fien + Priddis fight for hooker towards the end of this year. We have Fien until end of 2011.
8. They won't be impacted as Gaz pushes a forward out with Scott going back to the pack.

The players that are important to our side have been locked up to longer term contracts....

And locked into contracts last year or early this year when most uneducated people were saying, 'who's this guy.'

Priddis and Saffy leaving at the end of this season, there is 250 - 300k there

Costigan is still a chance of leaving at the end of this year, i think it will happen, there is another 150k. Id say Emmett will go also

Blokes like Prior, Hunt, Young Scott and Weyman would not have cost the club much to resign.

2011; Smith and Cooper will leave so that frees up money for the 2012 season.

I dont mind loosing the players listed above, however i would like us to sign Merrin, Stanley and King ASAP.

I dont get how people think it will be impossible for us to stay under the cap..

A lot of the saints players are local juniors who have never played elsewhere and would be taking less than market value to stay.
Creagh, Hornby, Young, Cooper, Brett Morris, Nightingale, Prior, Dan Hunt etc.
To this list you can add imports who were struggling and unwanted at the time.....Weyman, Costigan, Priddis, Fien. Darius Boyd was only a winger and not the top shelf fullback he is now.
Bennett has managed the cap very well.

I love how everyone think we are over the cap.

Who was Michael Weyman when we signed him?

Who was Neville Costigan?

Beau Scott?

Jamie Soward?

Unlike other clubs, we improve our players after we sign them, not wait for it to be done then sign them.

I don't believe for one minute, we would be over the cap.

I would be very surprised if any player would be on more than $350k, and then only a couple on that amount.

We have a "superstar team", not a team of superstars. Sure we have many players who are well above average, but not in the sort of category as a Hayne or Inglis. Although Brett Morris is getting close.

It is the quality of our players and coaching staff, to meld as a team that has got us this far this season and win the minor premiership last year.

The addition of Gaz, along with Brett, will give us the X factor we need, to go the next step.
