The 'Scum' banner - when did NRL fans get so precious?

I remember a few years ago at Wollongong when the Sharks were playing, a fan held a sign up on the hill that said "God hates paedophiles and the Cronulla Sharks"

Lasted about 15 minutes before security made him take it down

Do people not understand what the word "scum" means? Think about how you would feel if someone called you scum in the pub. You'd blow up.

This is from urban dictionary:

(adj.) Possibly the worst word you can have your name associated with.

It is hard to define the word, but it is basically used to describe someone so disgraceful that they are seen as the lowest form of life. "Worthlessness", "waste of skin", "dirt". "Nothing". Far worse than most other insults, where the victim is often just referred to as genetalia.

The fact that "scum" is a non-swear, and seen as perfectly acceptable English, makes it even more demeaning and offensive. If you are condemned as a "merkin" or a "f**ktard", then you are simply being attacked with cliché profanity, used spontaneously and with no particular venom or thought. "Scum", however, is usually only used in exclusive conditions where it is the only word for the job, and makes the victim feel like the lowest of the low.

Look, it was immature and a bit silly but let's be real here.

Don't do it again and we all move on.

So...confirmation it should be reserved for Cronulla?

For real?

The banner was downright tame! If anything there should be more banners bagging opposition teams. God forbid the game should have any f**king personality, it's 2013 after all.

The banner said

SCUM: FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW

Mate i would like you to hold up a banner bagging opposition teams in South America/Europe- UK/Germany/Spain/Italy/Russia etc- i wouldn't like your chances of getting out of the grounds alive- this is why it's not appropriate

Yep, i'm sure that's what was intended by the vermin filth fans. I still don't see the problem

I wouldn't like my chances of paying to watch a f**kwit game like soccer, so it's a non-issue.
