I think SK lacks in leadership skills, and it is showing in our performances.

So why was he the captain of nearly every team he ever played in? Warren Ryan made him club captain at 21 years of age.

He might have flaws but leadership isn't one of them. I think you know that.

Do you reckon Hindy's lack of leadership skills is showing in our performances?

My point is the juniors have to come from somewhere and that is the Toyota Cup. Before the Toyota Cup they came from Jersey Flegg, well for NSW teams at least. Regardless these days where you need to be a lot bigger to play in the NRL than you did in the past, and a lot of players don't even hit first grade until 22 or 23. The Warriors have dominated NYC the past couple of years because their players have skill AND size. Results in actual NYC games and the competition aren't a true indication of whether all those players will go on to have good first grade careers.

And i'm saying the likes of the Broncos are currently built on strong NYC teams. Look at their current squad who have won 2 from 3 that have Hoffman, Yow Yeh, McCullough, Glen, McGuire, Hunt, Beale and Gillett who all had major contributions to the Broncos successful 08 team.

Look at what Parramatta has had in the NYC since 07 and its no wonder there is massive holes in the first grade squad or no depth. No club can continue to replenish or strengthening their squads by continually buying. Strong junior identification is how the likes of the Broncos and the Storm have been so dominant over the years.

Just because he was captain, doesn't Mean it will translate into him being a good coach.

Going by that logic poo poo, than cayless will be the worlds greatest coach bar none.

Hasler took over the Bulldogs because there wasn't much work to be done there. Same reason Bennett took over the Knights.

Why do you think Bennett wanted nothing to do with Souths? If he really wanted a challenge he would have gone there instead.

These blokes ain't silly, and they don't need to go to shit clubs. That's what rookie coaches are for, because they're the ones with nothing to lose.

Bennett would've chosen both the Knights and Souths over Parra. Both of their squads are vastly better than the Eels.

What gets me is that he drops Luke Burt after Round 1...merely a week after announcing Burt as his first choice kicked for the season ahead...

Very curious...

May be more too this

You were talking about his leadership qualities, not his coaching ability.

Suity

iFreak struggles to keep up. That's why he's always trying to change the subject.

If someone said "Being a good captain will make you a good coach" then iFreak would finally be able to win an argument, because we all know that being a good captain does not guarantee a good coach.

So when iFreak sees an argument that is tangentially related to a known falsehood, all he sees is the falsehood, and his little eyes light up - because the most important thing in the world to iFreak is winning his first argument on the internet.

Leading well on the field doesn't always mean you can inspire people off it, either. Kearney was much like Cayless as a skipper...he lead by example through his actions and his performances. It doesn't mean he is going to be able to inspire anything as a coach, and frankly I'm yet to see anything other than a fairly boring guy from the little we get to see of him

Winning the argument poo, that's your priority bud. Im just failing to understand your man love for SK as a coach.

The team lacks direction, motivation and drive. 3 qualities amongst others I believe should of been instilled into this team, by such a 'fine' leader of men.

Not man love, I just don't think he should be made the scapegoat for yesterday's performance.

The people on the inside of the club would know if Kearney's doing a good job, but us slobs watching on tv or in the stands are only able to judge the players. Blaming the coach isn't our call to make.

The team lacks direction, motivation and drive.

So do the Knights and the Panthers.

If it was that easy don't you think Bennett and Cleary would have done it this week?

i totally agree with that, we only see what were aloud to see,the other assumptions are made from what we see on the field and other media, for "us slobs"we dont really know half of whats going on behind closed doors.

Why the Eels won't cut their losses with coach Steve Kearney

James Hooper
The Sunday Telegraph
March 17, 2012 11:00PM

PARRAMATTA powerbrokers will not sack coach Stephen Kearney due to a contract loophole that would force them to pay out a $450,000 golden handshake.

Despite compiling the worst strike rate of any coach in 52 years at Parramatta, new chief executive Bob Bentley has opened negotiations to sign Kearney long-term.

And under the terms of a three-year contract negotiated by previous CEO Paul Osborne, Kearney will be paid out one year's salary in full should the Eels terminate him.

The Sunday Telegraph understands Parramatta officials view this as a waste of money and are manoeuvring to extend his deal but remove the full payout clause.

"All of that is between Bob Bentley and (Kearney)," Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo said.

"That's all been ongoing since Ossie was here, but there's nothing concrete.

"At the end of the day, he has got a contract until the end of next year and I don't think that he's going anywhere, unless someone does a Des Hasler to us.

"Obviously, at this stage, he's not in a hurry to sign and we're not either."

Not since captain-coach Ron Lynch won four games out of 22 in 1970 has a Parramatta coach compiled a worse winning percentage than Kearney, who had six wins, one draw and 19 losses from 26 matches going into last night's game against North Queensland.

Aside from the spotlight on the Eels due to the marquee signings of Chris Sandow and Willie Tonga, Parramatta must also juggle an ageing roster, with senior stars Nathan Hindmarsh, Luke Burt, Ben Smith, Shane Shackleton and Justin Poore all unsigned for next year.

Bentley confirmed he intended to open extension talks with Kearney over the coming months and stressed the coach's job was safe no matter the results.

"All I've said to Steve is it's on the agenda for discussion, but we haven't actually sat down and spoken about it," Bentley said.

"We believe he's the right man to take the club to the next level and across the board we're trying to do everything that we can to achieve those results.

"I know we've lost a lot of games and people are calling for his head, but there's a lot of footy yet to be played.

"From a coach's point of view, it's more about putting the right systems and structures in place that are going to give you long-term success.

"It might not win you a grand final every year, but it certainly should have you among the top four or the top eight each year."

Bentley said that senior players and one-club servants Hindmarsh and Burt will be given the latitude to make a call on their futures.

"We haven't yet sat down and discussed their futures, but it would be nice for them to come and sit down with us and make their own decisions," Bentley said.

"We owe it to them to let them tell us when they feel it's time to either end their careers or go around again."

The alarm bells sounded last week for 245-game Eels veteran Burt, who was axed to Wentworthville before being recalled for last night's match against the Cowboys.
