How much will the Total Broadcast Rights Deal be?

Oh and on the HD element it really isn't that big a deal right now.

I have a HD TV, alot of people here have a HD TV but what is the percentage of households that have a HD TV. This is something to me that makes more sense to negotiate in as a requirement in the next deal.

The deal does not exclude games being in HD, it just does not mandate them. We are in a volatile marketplace and such a demand would drastically de-value the rights because of the outlay required by the network to run the higher grade coverage.

It is about sustainable growth across the board.

The single most important factor is the stranglehold of News and 9 ends in 5 years. We finally have our destiny in our hands

They are already filming all the games in HD ( the major cost)

All we're asking for is for them to be shown on GEM as well.

Still not to sure what to think of the deal, the money side does look good with a chance to continue to grow the game. Getting Fox and Nein to give up first and last rights is also a massive plus for the game. Still disappointed we have to put up with the Merkins at Nein for five more years, just 1 live FTA game is still not good enough and no games on HD till 2014 in this day and age is laughable. 7/10 for mine.

the AFL has been shown on FTA in prime time in NSW & QLD for 30 years
it rates worse then the telle tubbies
the simulcasting has done nothing for them or FOX either ... with only 20,000 new subscribers despite fox paying a fortune to the AFL & also spending a fortune on their coverage & dedicated channel
fox weren't going to have a repeat of that at a premium price
as they aren't going to get a return

we have got the money we require as a code to flourish
all of wot other people in here are complaining about means we would have fallen well short
we couldn't let that happen .........& anyone who says we should have is kidding themselves.

They have not been shown in prime time , 1.00pm on sat and sunday is anything but prime time.

So basically the scoreboard reads...

WINS
1. Billion dollar payday.
2. Fixed scheduling for first 20 rounds.

MISSES
1. Fourth FTA game (possibly in 2015 with expansion).
2. Saturday night FTA (again possibly in 2015 with expansion).
3. All matches live on Pay.
4. Representative scheduling fix (locked in Wed Origin and standalone Anzac Test).
5. Sunday afternoon doubleheader.
6. Shorter season length.
7. Multiple FTA broadcasters and fresh blood.

LOSSES
1. Twilight Grand Final (locked into 7.15pm).

UNKNOWNS
1. Live or delayed Sunday afternoon FTA.
2. Expanded advertising breaks in live games.

Leigh.

This is completely f**ked, I'm sorry but it is nothing short of f**ked.

The money is good very good but lets look at everything else.

Another f**king five years of the f**king Broncos being on every f**king week with that f**king bigoted, redneck, racist merkin of an arsehole that is Ray f**king Hadley, a man who has an ego and a sense of self-importance the size of Papua New Guinea. Other than being a despicable f**kwit of a human being he also has the commentary talent of a zygote and shares the same level of love for Rugby League as Andrew Demetriou.

Considering that the legislation hasn't passed yet what is a bet that we will see the most hated man in the world that complete and utter f**kwit Glenn Munsie pop up at half time.

My biggest concern with the deal is that without simulcasting or all live games we will fall behind the AFL in terms of viewership. The AFL will get counted twice with Fox and FTA and we will lose potential viewers by sticking with 2 delayed games.

You missed the fact a QLD team is locked in to be one of those friday night games every round. So a fixed scheduling is just about as useless as the flexible one we have now.

Great day for RL. Personally couldn't care less that C9 still have the coverage. The financial injection overrides all of that shit

Theres not much to be optimistic here.
A fixed schedule which is useless anyways cause they have came out and said a Queensland team will always play on friday night. So it entirely defeats the purpose.

The purpose of the fixed schedule was to provide certainty over who was playing when. It had nothing to do with one Qld team a week.

We still get stuck with horrible commentators.

Opinion of commentators is purely subjective. And who do you think should do the commentating instead?

We now get a sunday night game, more thursday games and monday night footy is still there. Which means once again money over fans.

Isn't it better for the fans because more people watch those matches then at other times. MNF is Fox's highest drawing match. Now with an increased club grant and salary cap, both players and clubs will also benefit and not be out of pocket as much.

Nothing that could come out of this could be considered good for the NRL fan.
Its the same shit with a new more expensive pricetag.

Everything that could have been done to make these rights which would have been good for the fans, good for the game, has been ignored and whored out so channel 9 can have its way with the game once again.
Its a f**king travesty and to say this is a good deal because of the $$$ is obviously a cash above all else kind of person.

The truth remains that we, the fans, just got f**ked over for alot of cash.

What would you rather happened. Instead of saying everything is bullshit actually offer something. Fans now know when all the matches are up until round 20. And when there is a clearer top 8 picture after round 16, the final 6 rounds will also be scheduled in advance giving fans the opportunity to be able to plan to watch their team play. Yes there could have been more matches on FTA but do you think they the ARLC would have rejected 7 or 10 if they were anywhere near the ballpark. Of course they wouldn't. Fact is people would have complained no matter what. If every game got broadcast of FTA and Fox at the same time but ARLC only got $750 million, people would have complained because they didn't get enough money

Not quite..

It does allow people( the fans who you said are f**ked over) the opportunity to make their away travel plans well in advance...

I'm probably most disappointed with the complete lack of innovation in the deal.

It's basically exactly the same (or backwards even considering Nine picks the games plus weds origin and night-time GF) for more money.

Grant made a big point of getting rid of the first/last rights clause, which I guess is good, but I really expected something creative or some way we could be leaders in the field of Australian sports broadcasting.

Obviously having high expectations of NRL administration is silly, and the $1B will help innovation, still a little let down.

I don't like that 9 are back, but I do like the dough, a lot.

Pretty close to equal to AFL with one less game per week, 1 less hour per game, less live games on FTA, less in-game ads and they have 2 new teams that are not only bleeding like stuck pigs, the incumbent teams where the new teams went are bleeding profusely as well.

As for the times etc, we all have to remember that when you pay that much money for a product, you have to have a few wins in the deal. Remember, they did lose their first/last rights clause too.

At the end of the day I think it's a big win. Well done ARLC.
