How much will the Total Broadcast Rights Deal be?

My biggest concern with the deal is that without simulcasting or all live games we will fall behind the AFL in terms of viewership. The AFL will get counted twice with Fox and FTA and we will lose potential viewers by sticking with 2 delayed games.

With Fox broadcasting in HD (or even in SD), Fox subscribers would watch Fox instead of Nine in most cases. Why would Nine want that?

Theres not much to be optimistic here.
A fixed schedule which is useless anyways cause they have came out and said a Queensland team will always play on friday night. So it entirely defeats the purpose.

Regardless of whether the Broncos are on every Friday night or not, fans will be able to plan to go to games from when the draw is released.

There are certainly negative points to this deal and you don't have to like it but you are carrying on like a baby. Grow up.

The salary cap should be increased along with the cash the NRL hands out. IMO they should match the salary cap amount so player payments are never an issue if a club may fold such as the Titan's situation earlier this year.

There is no reason with this deal and the money thrown around that we cant have the following:

Grants to clubs - 7mil
Salary Cap - 5.5mil

The club grant would only account for 112 mil out of the 185 mil of the TV rights.

People have called for fixed scheduling for a long time now. And when it pops up they are still f**ing rubbishing it

You missed the fact a QLD team is locked in to be one of those friday night games every round. So a fixed scheduling is just about as useless as the flexible one we have now.

There's a better chance that the teams may vary a little more though.

Big risk giving the majority of games to the broncos is they have a sh*tty season.

I wonder how the posters upset with this deal would feel if the NRL announced today that there would be 3 games live on Channel 9 with every game shown live on Fox, but the cash component is only worth $650m?

So I'm guessing that with no word on advertising in the friday night games that they decided against the ridiculous idea of stopping the game for ads?

Dollars aside, we have gained more out of the deal then Nine and Fox Sports have. And, they've paid more than double for it.

The deal is for 8 games, not including NZ or Internet and Mobile rights. We win.

Was there some comment by Gyngell that there was no value in a 9th game?

No but I posted this in expansion (cut out my bit on the CCBears)

The deal doesn't include a 9th game and it was said that the current new deal leaves little for set up costs or long term sustainability to any new franchises as quoted by Grant himself. Are 9 going to pay the extra $100m for a new Brisbane team now considering its quite obvious by Gyngell's body language that they already paid more than they intended too to keep the rights?

Are FOXTEL prepared to pay extra for set up costs and sustainability into a WA franchise? To be honest, judging by Gyngell's answer to the Broncos being on channel 9 and continuing to be I don't think 9 are gonna pay for an extra SELD side now. While Foxtel might still invest in a WA side, I also think their commitment has waned. The low set up cost and self sustainable bids have suddenly, in my opinion, started looking real good to the TV execs as it means less money to invest but still getting some sort of revenue.

Lets rewind 24 months.

Everyone in the game would have been astounded if you told them exactly what the deal would have been.

look at the big picture, it is a better deal than the AFL, and still has some restritions on it, (coupled with radio & NZ rights to be finalised).

5 years time will be the real game changer in this country, anyone who cannot see this needs help.

Begs one question, Are you happy with the current deal, considering what it will deliver in 5 years time?

I am.

I don't like that 9 are back, but I do like the dough, a lot.

Pretty close to equal to AFL with one less game per week, 1 less hour per game, less live games on FTA, less in-game ads and they have 2 new teams that are not only bleeding like stuck pigs, the incumbent teams where the new teams went are bleeding profusely as well.

As for the times etc, we all have to remember that when you pay that much money for a product, you have to have a few wins in the deal. Remember, they did lose their first/last rights clause too.

At the end of the day I think it's a big win. Well done ARLC.

Thats the thing.

It looks like the first/last rights were traded for some of what 9 want.

In which case its not such a bad thing.

The ARLC will be in a much better position to dictate terms next time. And without 9/fox having the first/last rights the game is now truly independent.

Yeah I honestly dont get it. how does having one queensland team playing every Friday night have any impact on this? Every fan will know at the start of the season where and when every one of their teams first 20 games are going to be. Its a huge win.

Well said.

To get the right price it is all about giving and taking.

Yes the ARLC gave up a few things, but so did nine and foxtel.
