Seems a pretty good result to me. We got basically 95% of the $$ that AFL did.

Fixed scheduling is fantastic win, even the last 6 rounds will be scheduled by Rd 16.

For someone like myself this allows me to book flights, accom to a game in Aug in Feb.

One other "win" that people seemed to ignore, is no "structural" change to our game, that is no quarters, clock stopping every 2nd minute, 45min halves and all that other bullshit that AFL trolls claimed would be needed to get around $1B.

Spot on and it's a point that some people here have either forgot about or just don't care about. How the f**k are you meant to grow the game in Melbourne when absolutely nothing has changed in regards to the broadcasting of the games down here? Oh that's right, we have the extra money now so that'll solve everything..........

Storm fans, of all people, should know the value of extra money and what it can do.

I still think what needs to be highlight - is that we still have the Kiwi TV deal coming. It should fetch atleast another 100 million over five years.

This TV/Media Deal is not really over yet. The result seems to be a great one. The key for the next stage will be convincing New Zealand TV that RL can become far more popular than it is in NZ and the ARLC will put time and effort into making it so. (I for one think that there should be an additional Non-Auckland Under 20's)

I would also put out the challenge to PNG who say they can substantially increase TV income (which is the pudding so far as any chance of getting a team) to show us the money.

I think you will find that once all the dust settles this wider deal will be more than the AFL (despite having less hours of TV and less Ad time) less clubs and less running cost at those clubs.

Does anyone know if we add two more teams whether the extra games can be sold to who ever we want or do they need to be given/sold to Nine/Foxtel? For instance, at the end of the year, could we go to Seven and Nine and say, Do you want to buy a game that we are about to create?

Remembering the press conference from what I saw didn't Gyngell say the situation as it stands with games shown into all markets on 9 or Gem would continue? Are they not shown live on GEM now?

Really good point.

Instead of complaining, why don't you actually say want you would have liked to see
Channel 10 get rights.
More than 1 live game showed per week.
All games shown in HD.
Fixed schedule that doesnt say a QLD team has to play every friday night. Stations have NO SAY whatsoever on who plays when.
SOO moved to Monday night. Introduction of 2 split rounds half round played during every SOO and the AusVNz/CVC weekend.
Confirmation of either Expansion going ahead or not.

Yes, Im Rothfield. Because im on LU at 1pm on a Tuesday.
Laurie daley getting the SOO coach is just another shitty news to be delivered today.

2014 isnt guaranteed though.

Anyone who has followed digital TV progression is AUS knows dates have been pushed back alll the time.

They wont switch their main channels to HD until there is a very high HD penetration.

You know what would ensure very high HD penetration?

Turning off the f**king SD and forcing the cheap merkins out there to buy a $20 set top box

A shitload of more money invested into grassfooty will do more for rugby league than anything hd or live games could dream of. If you were a true rugby league fan instead of sounding like a selfish and whinging television viewer, you would be celebrating the massive future rugby league has ahead of it. I know I am

And how much would you like 10 to pay over the next 5 years to provide this?

As a Storm fan - I am not sure the problem with the deal that others are complaining about. It is my understanding that Grant said that as part of the deal is national coverage (obviously flexing to Gem). The centrality of the 'main station' will quickly decline as people get used of the broader options.

I'm looking forward to another 5 years on the Broncos every night, and Cronulla getting screwed over in terms of FTA coverage.

Simply, no first and last rights for Fox and ch9 means they can no longer take the game for granted with the mindset that Rugby League will still sign on with them. Quality will have to increase from these two players or face the most realistic chance of losing the access to Rugby League in 4 years time. This alone will force 9 to produce a better product to the fans.

Contra money is huge also as there will be more advertising on Ch9 and Fox so the amount of AFL advertising you see now on 7 and fox will be at least matched by Ch 9 and Fox as well as advertisement quality with more money to spend on the product.

Do people really think that the commission didn't consider different scheduling, simulcasting, more live games, dedicated channel etc? Really??

I put faith in the commission that they chose to forgo some of these things in order to obtain a higher monetary value. I'm guessing at this stage of the games development, it's more important.
Thats the crux of it. There are alot of problems with the status quo, and with the exception of fixed scheduling, we have retained them all.

In the end, the dollar signs overruled. We sacrificed almost every other potentially positive aspect of the rights to get that big cheque. I really hope it wasnt just to do with getting close to what the AFL got, and more to do with getting rid of the First and Last bid rights.

We have no dedicated channel, no 8 games live on fox, no guarantees of FTA coverage in development states, no Saturday or Monday FTA football. We have a night GF. On FTA we have a FTA game on late at night, total exclusivity to 9 for Friday night, only 1 live game, no HD. We really dont have the best setup for expanding the game. Can we get expansion done under this deal? Expansion clubs wont even be on TV in Perth seemingly. We now have the money to expand, but we dont have the broadcast deal to support it.

To be honest, I would have preferred progression on some of these things, the developmental aspects balanced a bit more, and that we scrape our way to $1B, rather than smash our way past it and let all these things go, and ill tell you why, the higher money you get, the more money goes to the players.

Now im not saying thats a bad thing, but if you get proper national FTA coverage then clubs can sell shirt and ground sponsorships for alot more. If you get good coverage in Perth and Melbourne for 5 years then the game can grow. And if getting these things is the difference between the players getting a %31 or 32% payrise then ill take the coverage, but it looks like we have gone with the players, with taking the money.

It feels weird, I was honestly expecting the league to go hard for all these things. For simulcasting, multi-channeling, all games live on fox, a league channel, games on FTA, live in HD, all the time, throughout the whole country, guarantees for expansion, the works. AND a billion dollars.

I guess I was expecting to have my cake and eat it too.
