Rugby League has come a long way in 10 years.

If we said 2 years ago we would keep the status quo but get a billion dollars we would all be doing cartwheels

We now have $1 Billion to invest in the game. We use this money to develop the game further from grass root to international development.

We then go to the bargaining table in 4 years time with our game in absolutley outstanding shape and flushed with funds and well managed. Then we hold all the cards.

As someone else said a small minor win now for major potential wins in the long term.

Add to that the removal of News Ltd from the NRL and now the optioned broadcast rights and we are in such a superior position

Does the NRL get to choose which teams plays on Friday as long as one NSW and one QLD are playing?

the cash is what will grow the game

people fail to realise this

With TV not dictating the 9th game, or teams involved, the ARLC has free reign to spend its new $'s where it feels is strategically most importnant for the long term growth of the game. Of course it could take the cheap option and do nothing for another 5 years but that would be dissapointing.

2014 will definately be when the whole country is switched over. All previous delays were prior to starting the actual switch starting. Its too far progressed to stop now.

Not for HD though.

the networks wont switch their main channels to HD until there is an extremely high penetration rate of HD ready TV's or HD set top boxes.

I'm no fan of the delayed games but what are we more concerned about - some sort of moral win on total agregate viewers or the size of the broadcast deal itself? We were never in the hunt when you consider the 8 vs 9 game comparison any way.

Up until now we've mostly been talking about viewership as the other metric was flawed as the two deals weren't apple for apples. Now that this deal has been done and it is in effect a continuation of the previous deal it is in fact a validation of the NRL's television audiences to date.

When you look at the per game averages for individual game - the exclusive NRL games on Fox Sports are averaging higher than the exclusive AFL games on Fox Sports. And when you compare the national average audience for the AFL's simulcast games (7 + Fox + Regionals) to the NRL's (9 +Regionals) the NRL's average audience is higher. And when it comes to those head to head big matches, the NRL also does well.

There's a case to also be made about over saturation too and what too much access to too wide a TV audience may have had on crowds. Not only that but TV audiences too. When you have too many options, viewers become more selective about what they watch.

I would've prefered to see 9 lose the rights. But for the dollars the NRL are getting, it's a great deal. And for what 9 & Fox are conceding, it's a great deal. The only problem is that we didn't pick up that 4th F2A game - but there may be some provision for that once expansion occurs. I don't think they were clear on that.

Being "the most watched code" is great for advertising campaigns and zealots to flog themselves into a lather over but in the end if the broadcasters see no real return, or as is reported to be the case with AFL now, a leaking of non recoupable outlay the broadcasters simply will not pony up the cash next deal to the same extent.

The NRL have negotiated a fair deal whhich they gain great benefit from but leaves some meat on the bone for the networks. They did this by making the broadcasters sign away their guaranteed options which puts the NRL in a far superior position as they have free negotiations after 5 years and two happy broadcasters who got value for money.

Long term win and short term minor win

Thanks for the explaination guys. So did 9 & FOX relinquish F&L Rights?

9 would hae still had them next time

Fox would have had them till 2027

they will not have those rights now

Yep, Nine had them until 2018, which means after this deal they wouldve had them in negotiations for the next deal.

Pretty sure thats why the rumours were coming out about a 6 year deal. Nine were probably leveraging it to say lets make a 6 year deal which would see out their period of first and last rights.

Grant and the NRL have got the 5 year deal AND Nine/News have lost all rights on furture deals.

Not tieing it to the broadcast deal also gives real time to work out the most sustainable, long term viability option through proper study

Can somebody explain to me what the first & last rights deal entails?

Everyone seems really happy about it, want to gain an understanding?

Happy with the deal, Rugby League is about to get a whole lot better.

Pete

It means that the current contract/rights holders have first dibs when the new deal is being sought. Then other interested parties can bid, then the current holders get the last & final chance to bid for the contract/rights (outbid any other parties). In reality any one/body that has first & last rights should never lose a contract unless they want to.

Oh no the highest rating team will likely be on every friday night still nooooo. They should share it around so ratings winners like Cronulla and Penrith can get a fair look in!

True , but live coverage opens the game up to more casual viewers IMO.

Hard to be a $$$ figure on that.

Casual fans and non fans alike know that the Nrl is being shown at such and such time. Making it live isn't going to convert them especially when they wouldn't have a clue whether it was live or not in the first place

My only concern is what has been done in relation to coverage of the storm into Melbourne

All FTA channels are converting to HD so any game on 9 be it regular season or Rep will be in HD.
Im looking at this and cant find it ANYWHERE on the internet.
The only thing happening in 2014 is the removal of analog and even that shit keeps on getting pushed back. Nowhere can i find that every FTA channel is switching to HD.
look at the big picture, it is a better deal than the AFL,
It really REALLY isnt.
People have called for fixed scheduling for a long time now. And when it pops up they are still f**ing rubbishing it
Because they butchered it with the channel 9 getting their way and allowing a QLD game to be set in stone every friday.
There are certainly negative points to this deal and you don't have to like it but you are carrying on like a baby. Grow up.
Eat a dick. This is a f**king dropped ball for our game and everyone is okay, no in some cases kissing its cause cause of the MONEY.
i wonder how the posters upset with this deal would feel if the nrl announced today that there would be 3 games live on channel 9 with every game shown live on fox, but the cash component is only worth $650m?
If they remove alot of the other bad shit in this deal it would have been much better 3 live games is a positive. In this deal we get 1.
It's a pretty good deal.
Doc. It isnt. It really isnt.
Today the game whored itself out for more money and took a step back in the direction we should have been going. We ballsed it up.
Today we were delivered the same shit that the majority of the people have been whinging about for years. Nothing has changed, all we did was get more money from it.
The game sold out and f**ked us all over and were supposed to "move on" as you put it.
f**k you.
What a disgusting day to be a fan of rugby league. To have people who have been whinging so long about the same shit over and over again to kingdom come to just roll over when more money is thrown at the game.
What does that say about us as people.
So very sad.
