But when it's about the share price, well hell boys and girls, look at our fabulous shows and the ratings! My goodness, the ratings are awesome!

3 Words -

Young
Talent
Time

I hope someone digs deep and maybe League gets a Dutch Auction going.

That's what will happen if 9 goes blind.

I'm just saying that there is a point at which a Company can't pay any more

The obvious counter to that is - there is a point at which a company can't lose any more.

It also might make some other channel think "hell with that, lets grab the Union and plug it a little harder on FTA" or maybe the "incoming tide lifts all boats" rule applies and Union see's some uplift in what they can expect for broadcast rights as well.

I can't see Super Rugby going head to head to with NRL or AFL. They'd stick with Young Talent Time.

Doc, do you think if the ARLC demanded/set out additional afternoon games it would affect the value of the deal by much? At the moment we have 2 afternoon games per round which is a joke. Dragging up the AFL again but they have 5 afternoon games each round but it didn't seem to detrimentely affect their valuation, so the same should apply to us. And note that their afternoon games include many blockbuster rivalries between say the big 4 afl clubs. This is something we rarely get treated to with our big sydney derbies consistently on FNF and MNF.

Well that Saturday arvo thing in SMH is more about getting a F2A network to compete against Foxtel's slots directly.

When you flip this around on its head to see what's left over after the core night & arvo games are deducted -

2 Friday Night games
2 Saturday twilight & night (post 5pm kickoff) games minimum
1 Thursday or Monday Night game
2 Sunday arvo games minimum

That only leaves 1 game left over before expansion and 2 post expansion.

IMO for this deal Sunday night games should only focus on holiday periods - maybe 6 to 10 times a year. What we've seen previously is that Fox can get the viewers alerted to one off Sunday night games and they get audiences so I don't see the whole Sunday Night irregularity thing being an issue.

So I mean for the life of the next contract -

Years 1-2
That 1 remaining game could spend 1/3rd of its time on a Sunday night and the rest of its time either Sunday Arvo or Saturday Arvo pre-news.

So 1/3rd of the season -2 arvo games
2/3rds of the season -3 arvo games

Years 3-5
The 2 remaining games could rotate between Sunday night and the rest of their time between Sunday Arvo or Saturday Arvo pre-news - or even lock one of those away permanently.

So 1/3rd of the season - 3 arvo games
2/3rds of the season - 4 arvo games

That said whilst a floating timeslot game will work for Foxtel, it won't work for F2A - they will want it locked away with regularity if the F2A channel only has 4 games a week broadcast. But say if channel 10 were to get the full package, then you could see them locking away the Saturday pre-news and having Sunday nights as irregular but big event games.

Of course all of that's just speculation - not saying it will happen at all, but it certainly is workable.

Sure, but not at any price, not when there is a finite amount of cash in the bank and all of it's debt. If they overpay and it all goes pearshaped, the current Board will be in deep trouble and don't think they're not aware of that possibility.

Everyone seems to think there's going to be this more than doubling of the current deal but I'm not sure anyone is looking at the fiscal realities of the situation. Eggs are being counted as chickens all over the place.

And no, they don't fund the Billion upfront, but what is the loading? How do they cashflow it 'cause I doubt they can borrow anymore. And 200 to 250 Million dollars a year is a lot of revenue to find when you're on the slide, massiviely in debt, leveraged to the hilt and you're talking about doubling the cost (or more) of just one rights deal while running around trying to cut the guts out of everything else.

What's to stop the 5 year deal spread thus,to ease the burden of highly geared stations and to maximise the price when the ad market and economy turns around in 2014 at latest.
IOW
2013 $160m pa
2014 $180m pa
2015 (year of expansion) $200m pa
2016 $220m pa
2017 $240m pa.
Total Tv contract value $1bn
Any sort of configuration could be used in that equation.

Well I know your question is intended for Karl but the obvious answer is nothing is stopping that and it's common sense solution. The question for the NRL is how much they think they need for those first 3 years though. Is $160m PA enough to get the job done etc.

And if the networks claim "Oh but we'll be struggling in 2017 too" perhaps the response to that needs to be "Don't worry, if you still haven't turned it around after 6 years, you probably won't be in this job anyway"

Activate cool shades... now! -

More afternoons would be great for fans and attendances. 2015-

2 Friday Night (FTA)
3 Saturday , 2pm, 4pm and 7pm (this could be 5pm WA time game) (All Live Pay TV exclusive)
3 Sunday 1.30pm (FTA), 3.30pm (FTA), 5.30pm (this could be 3.30pm WA time game) (Pay TV exclusive)
1 Monday Night (FTA or Pay, whoever pays most!)

FTA games shown simucast live on Pay TV
that would be best imo for fans and $'s. It would give potentially just 3 evening games

Seems they may be looking at a FTA game for Saturdays which surprises me as the Super Saturday exclusivity would be quite a valuable part of the deal for Fox I would have thought?

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...iority-in-new-rights-deal-20120430-1xv66.html

That's exactly why we should be looking at it. Putting up no opposition against the AFL on Saturdays gives them a big leg up (they especially like to use that timeslot so that they can go uncontested in Sydney and Brisbane and not get demolished). It's also a big ratings winner for fox.

We have to make sure there is a plausible alternative on the table to make fox pony up the money for it. If they aren't willing to pay top dollar we should take the game to FTA which would be great for the game anyway.

If all games are to be simulcast live on Fox then it would have to be on the radar

It needs to happen, but I just dont see it.

Have a look at Fox Footy there are so many other afl related shows on throughout the week.

Are they gonna produce the same for NRL

one thing that does need to increase is access to players before during and after games. Too few tv interviews and the players need to realise it helps there profile as well.

You make a great point CC. Everyone bangs on about the lack of professionalism by the games administrators compared to the AFL, but the players and coaches are the same, if not worse. No one wants to give interviews, and when they do they give half ar$ed responses.

Gotta use that contra for something. These probably cost Foxtel nothing to make.

Well said. The AFL Fox TV crap consists of endless interviews with old farts. It is on at the gym I go to each day and it has so much crap on it you would not believe it. You need a lot more football to make a channel like that interesting and we have it. The AFL does not.

I have no doubt we can produce a much better NRL Fox Footy station than theirs.

Problem is that Fox and the FTA broadcasters seem to work under the assumption that fans of rugby league are only interested in the NRL and indeed there own club in Brisbanes case. It would take a lot of persuading from the ARLC to get a channel with all of that content.

Wouldn't it be great though being able to tune into the Lord Derby Cup final or the Hull derby live in HD!
