Everyone will be in an uproar of we get less than a billion. But we'll hardly be suffering. It will be more money than the game has ever had.

But given rl's track record as a proven tv performer, it will be a disgrace if we do get below the billion.

"But, according to estimates from the media agency MagnaGlobal, the AFL commands between $115 million and $125 million in TV ad revenue whereas the NRL is closer to $100 million.

I think Doc Brown already highlighted this on Tues when the SMH published this, but this is AMAZING!!

The circular agruement for the value of both codes to broadcasters has always been...AFL fans stating that AFL games are longer and show more ad's, against the NRL fans arguement that the FTA networks make more money from the Northern states.

This is the first time i've ever seen any stat's on this arguement, and it's incredible!

In 2011 the AFL had 4 FTA games a week for 22 weeks, nationwide, with total ad saturation, for $115 to $125 million.

The NRL's coverage was way behind with only 3 FTA games in 2 states for 24 weeks, at 50% ad capacity, for $100 million.

How much will the NRL be worth in 2013 with 4 FTA games a week, nationwide, with each games value doubled with full ad saturation?

It won't even be a close contest.

I hear that !

Who else here has their tv set to channel 9 by default? I do, and this is solely because or many years of RL viewing. When I wake up, it is Today that is on (unless my toddler is up, then it is Disney Junior). When I get home from work, it is generally 9 that is on if I watch any FTA channel. I do dabble a bit into 10 as they have some good shows but 9 always seems to be on.

What would happen if 9 lose the NRL for me? I dont know, but I would probably lean towards the other channel simply because I am watching RL on that channel. Why? Well simply because of the advertising. Think of it this way, I hardly ever watch channel 7. Why? because they have AFL. I dont watch it, hence I dont watch the advertisments. If I dont watch the advertisments I dont watch the shows they have on offer as I dont know the show would be on.

This is a big reason why Channel 9 do so well in the Sunday 6pm news. You have up to 1m people across the country watching the RL telecast. By default after the game the channel wont change, and probably wont change again at 6.30, then 7.30 etc.

If 9 lose the rights, I can see massive ratings drop simply because of people like me. Not only will they lose ratings in a proven product like the NRL, but they will also lose ratings in the news. Sunday 29/04/12 Channel 9 6pm news achieved 1,502,000 and Channel 7 6pm news 1,500,000. If you suddenly dont have a ratings puller in RL before these 2 channel 9 shows, what would happen? Well lets take 10% (just a random number) off the ch9 news, and add that to the Channel 7 news (if 7 get the NRL tv rights for example). Suddenly ch9 decreses to 1,351,800 and ch 7 increases to 1,650,200.

This is a big reason why ch7 wants the rights. To increase their total share of viewers and the expense of ch 9

Personally, I would prefer 10 to get the FTA rights over 7 simply because of the programs they show are more my style, and all games simulcast on FOX.

Let the bidding begin!

Same with me. I have spent too many years watching channel 9, thanks almost entirely to them having the footy and the cricket rights. That led to me watching other programs on 9, without ever being very aware of what was on other channels. Losing the footy will definitely have an impact on the ratings for their other shows too!

The alternate argument to that is now almost everyone has digital tv, and most digital TV's have an in built EPG, its much easier to find out what is on the other channels, so Id Say there are alot less TV's "stuck" on one channel all of the time.

Same here, the only other reason I have Austar is for the NFL, but with the NFL game pass available, I will happily purchase that and flick pay tv in a heart beat. These geniuss at Fox need to get it through their head that it will be a bloodbath for them if they lose the rights to the NRL.

I watch NFL regularly on channel One.

My tv is stuck on 502, ESPN and 513. I avoid commercial tv stations like the plague unless its a really good show such as underbelly, upcoming bikie wars on 10 etc...... Their 6pm news is mindless drivel and sensationalist (my standards are pretty high growing up on a diet of bbc 6pm news) so i dont watch it.

ON 9 i watch the footy but rarely the second friday night game, usually watch the sunday footy watch an the roast when it was on. If 9 lost the rights i would not miss it!

I was going to read it for a laugh but I didn't get past "in shatters". If you're that illiterate your opinions aren't worth reading.

This x1000

There are a few shows on other channels I like but none that I watch routinely simply because I don't know when they're on, half the time I don't even know what channle they're on. For example I like How I Met Your Mother but tbh I don't know whether it's on 7 or 10 and no way could I tell you when it's on. However, I find myself watching the 15th repeat of a season 2 episode of Big Bang Theory because it's on 9 (and I like the show - though I'd probaby choose something better if it wasn't for the default setting). Channel 9 don't have great shows but they have enough decent ones (Big Bang, Theory, 2 and a half men, the block, underbelly) that I'm not turned away constantly (unless the Voice is on). If 7 got the rights, I'd be watching 7 news regularly, I'd probably also have today tonight on (though I don't generally pay attention to the tv during this time) and it would lead me to whatever they show at 7 (is Home and Away 7 or 10? That would be enough to push me back to 9 for the evening).

I have to agree with the last few posters. I tend to watch 9 all the time (if I were to watch a FTA channel) - I detest 7 and will not watch anything on there as they have the AFL rights. I also have foxtel, and use the EPG buth by default I tend to shift to 9. It also happens to be the first channel in the EPG on Foxtel so this helps also.

Are you serious? You've blacklisted an entire station just because they show a footy code that you aren't interested in. Wont you be a conflicted young man if 7 get the rights the NRL as well. Gotta get over the unnecessary hate guys. Its starting to sound like Big Footy in here.

What he probably means is, he doesn't watch 7 because they shove vFL down your throat all day and night.

Yes, all the friggen ads with unknown AFL players.. I also think that they have different types of shows on there that just dont interest me - dancing with the stars etc. Maybe it's because of the fact that the League is on 9 and I sometimes watch the ads - and hence know more about what's on.

I don't watch much commercial TV.

If Fox didn't have the NRL, I'd just watch movies, surf for porn and post in here.

Actually, thats not really much different to what I do now.

Summing it up, I don't care who gets the rights. I do care that we get the best price available.

I channel surf constantly based on what is on. I use the directory button on the remote that shows what is on and I scroll around til I find something and click it. Simple. What is the point of "channel loyalty"?
