Channel 9 are a laughing stock.

Their fall from grace has been amazing. I can't see them catching 7 anytime soon. If 9 lose SOO god knows how they will perform.

They need to cease the exclusive radio rights to 2GB and allow everyone to have a chance to broadcast it but at a pretty price....... The stance they have at the moment defies logic.

Yep the current system both reduces our exposure massively and reduces the amount of money we get. It's a crazy situation.

It's good to keep it in mind but what tends to happen is when you focus too much on what the competition is doing you tend to end up with crap like Excess Backage.

This. Grant is bang on, while we can use the AFL deal as a bargaining tool and point of comparison, we should NOT be defined by whatever they're doing.

Radio rights are small change. You're never going to make huge money selling radio rights, the value is in the exposure not the money. Selling exclusive rights works entirely against that value by limiting exposure, limiting the number of games covered, and limiting their accessibility. Instead of looking at the money, radio rights should be treated as a loss leader to promote much more valuable revenue sources like television rights and gate takings.

The NRL should be opening the radio rights to all comers, even at zero cost, with the condition that the NRL retains the right to simulcast any coverage free of charge through its own media outlets (eg. NRL.com website). The aim should be to ensure every game is covered with one or more live audio commentaries, those commentaries are available worldwide, and they are accessible from one consistent source controlled by the NRL. I should be able to click a button next to the live scores on the NRL website and have immediate access to all commentaries on that game without going to another website.

Leigh.

Very good points Quidgybo.

Sportsbet has framed a market for the rights deal:

FINALLY, we have ourselves an independent commission for rugby league. No.1 on the to-do list is to negotiate a new TV broadcast rights deal. But what is the dang thing worth? Sportsbet.com.au have framed the following market:
- $2.50 $1billion or more
- $4.00 Between $951m and $1bn
- $4.00 Less than $800m
- $4.50 Between $901m and $950m
- $6.00 Between $851m and $900m
- $9.00 Between $800 m and $850m
'' It looks as though the NRL will get that magical $1 billion mark,'' said sportsbet.com.au's Ben Hawes.

THE new boss of Fox Sports Patrick Delany is making a big impression in rugby league circles.

He's been out of his office to personally visit all the clubs _ and not just the blazer wearers. He's spoken to the coaches and players about the future of sports TV broadcasting in this country.

And this...

"We've been pursuing Matt for a while," Fox Sports chief executive Patrick Delany said.
"Being someone who has been an NRL fan all of my life, Matt brings quite a unique mixture of being able to give simple analysis and insight to the fans and also a bit of charming humour. You don't see that a lot."

Finally someone in admin that actually likes the game. Minor miracales do happen I suppose.

page 42 of the AFR on Feb 6

Rugby league is the most popular sport on pay TV in Australia, but Mr Delany said a dedicated NRL channel on Foxtel and Austar was not on the agenda.

“I think AFL will be unique in that regard,” he said. “AFL really is a 24 hours a day, seven days a week passion for its fans.”

I hope all AFL coverage goes onto fox footy and nothing is on Fox 1,2,3

All panel shows included

This way the casual fan will find it harder to stumble on to the shit

Out of all the hype and rumours surrounding our proposed TV rights deal, what the bookies have proposed is a genuine true reflection of what the game is expected to get. They have no other motive besides making money from bets.

I didn;t realise Fox and Ch9 had 3 months of exclusive negotiations! Why at the end of this wouldnt you still put it out on the open market to see if anyone wanted to offer more? Bit of a worry this one as Ch9/Fox could offer slight unders with the proviso it is accepted and not put on open market or the offer is taken away?

They now have three months to drill down a new deal - or the process will be opened up to the market with Seven and Ten already said to be interested in broadcasting rugby league.
"We go into the exclusive negotiating period with the current rights holders," chief executive David Gallop said.

But "slight unders" opens them up to being more easily trumped by 20%, thereby breaking the first and last option. Channel Nein especially can not afford to go low under any condition.

Leigh.

During the last rights negotiations, Nine put an offer on the table and gave the NRL only a few days to either accept it or it would be withdrawn.

Im assuming this wont happen this time.

Gallop has already said that he will be going to all players in the market.

so why bother with 3 months of exclusive negotiations if it will just go to the open market anyway?

Hinges on the packaging of the game for me (has there been any resolution to CH9's claim that it can;t be split up?) If we are talking 4 packages (2 Friday, Super Saturday, 2 Sunday+Monday and then SOO and Tests) then I can see the 20% thing easily being trumped. If it is sold as one complete package then I doubt other FTA's will be able to offer 20% more than Fox/Ch9 offer for the whole lot if it is around $8-900 mill.

Given we have 8 games a weekend and the AFL has 9 we should expect a slightly lower deal unless we pump up the $s for SOO and International Football.

That is why those extra parts (SOO and International Football) should be sold separately.
