So I see the WCC will nbe live NATIONALLY on Gem. What a disgrace. They won't put the All Stars on Gem in to the southern states, won't put Storm games in to Melbourne on digital in the regular season but they will show the WCC? Its all well and good if you are an Eagles fan but its a bitter pill to swallow if you're a Storm fan given we are constantly denied reasonable coverage of our own team at all between March and August.

My question is hypothetical.

If the NRL get an offer from 7&10 that does not exceed 9's bid by 20 per cent then 9 match the offer, or trump it slightly, is the NRL obliged to take the 9 offer?

Or could the NRL just say no thanks, the other channels are offering better national coverage of the game etc.

the NRL would have to take 9's offer providing they also matched any coverage promises as well i think

pretty much what 7 and 10 had to do when Packer bid $780 million for the AFL rights in their old deal as 7 had first and last rights

Well then 9 havent matched the offer.

Thanks for the feedback.

So I guess getting 7&10 interested once the 3 month negotiations with 9 have concluded is integral to lifting the price even if it’s only to force nine into a high bid.

On the flip side 9 could have little left in the tank to engage in a bidding war if they put their best deal on the table first up regardless of their first and last rights.

Well it wouldn't be a matching offer if it didn't offer the same coverage etc. The offer the NRL accepts is more than just a monetary figure, it's an entire package of agreed terms and conditions. If 9 want to match it with their last right option then they'd need to match the entire package, not just the money. And simply offering more money in itself wouldn't trump anything if it leaves out other components of the deal the NRL has already said it wants to accept.

They have to get the game nationally on FTA at a decent time if they have any hope of growing the game and not having expansion teams relying on handouts from the ARLC to keep them afloat.

National live FTA and fixed scheduling for the year are two conditions that any bidder should have to meet.

I'd tell 9 to get f**ked in any situation.

Why can;t we get Q'land cup and NSW cup on ABC live nationally? some of the minority sports they show on the ABC on a Saturday is laughable, surely there would be a greater audience for RL? It would also provide a massive boost for those struggling clubs to have national exposure making them more attractive to sponsors. I'd give the rights awayto ABC as long as they agreed to those conditions.

Then when there is more money they could have a combined top 5 super comp at end of season for the overall national championship!

Maybe QLD cup is where Voss is being demoted to?

Nine must be concerned about not having any League in Queensland from 2013.

9's first bid is going to get beaten. It just depends on whether or not it gets beaten by 20%.

A piece of interesting news was texted to me today re Channel 7.
