I'd have to disagree,

AFL
2 in WA
2 in SA
9 in Vic
2 in NSW
2 in Q'land
teams linked in to play regular games in:
NT
Tas
ACT
Basically they will have at least 4 games of AFL in every state and territory in the country

NRL
we have:
WA 0
SA 0
Vic 1
NSW10
Q'land 3
ACT 1

no guaranteed games in SA,WA, Tas or NT

Aside from maybe Newcastle I doubt there is any population area AFL would want to be in that we are in.

Comparing the states is flawed though, particularly when some states (NSW, QLD) have a much larger population than others (WA, SA, TAS, NT).

For arguments sake, lets say the Bears and Reds come into the NRL in 2013 (which they should) the competitions would look like this.

AFL
9 Melb
2 Perth
2 Adelaide
2 Sydney
1 Brisbane
1 Gold Coast

NRL
9 Sydney
1 Brisbane
1 Melbourne
1 Perth
1 Auckland
1 Gold Coast
1 Newcastle
1 Wollongong
1 Canberra
1 Townsville
1 Central Coast

Which one do you think is more impressive?

and tonight on 9 news Sydney they had a story on some Victorian fumbleball player getting married

apparently everyone in Sydney is supposed to know the chick from the Browneye medal

how?

the Browneye isn't shown in Sydney

There's a bit of that going on.

Ch9 has a promo for its 2011 Ben Elton show, making a point there's "no footy" talk on it, but have him holding a AFL sherrin ball even though the network has the rights to NRL and not AFL.

Dunno what's happened to the 2GB sports dept - news bulletins more often than not include an AFL mention, most are nothing to do with Sydney AFL teams, or they mention some Swan is going to be ready for Rd1 etc - yet the same could be said for players at every Sydney NRL club & that doesn't make news.

That was the link of the ad in youtube that El quoted.

It's is a joke that they "own" the rights to our game.

Fox pays:

NRL $8.4million for 5 weekly game slots
AFL $15.75 million for 4 weekly game slots

despite:
Ratings from pay television until the end of October show four of the top five shows this year are NRL games - the French Open final involving Samantha Stosur is the lone interloper, finishing in third spot.

The biggest game of the year remains the Parramatta-Sydney Roosters game, played at Parramatta Stadium in July. The further you dig, the more impressive the figures for the NRL. Of the top 50 shows, 39 are rugby league. Of the top 100, 73 are from the NRL.

Time for us to bend Fox over and give them a right royal shafting in the next deal!

And how exactly would we do that to them? Who is competing with Fox?

The NRL should offer the 5 games for 5mill to the ABC & SBS.

They will get a bigger audience than Fox due to the wider exposure (at least that is the argument they can use to force Fox's hand), then maybe Fox will actually give the matches the $$ they deserve.

Fox Need NRL alot more than the NRL needs Fox! Without NRL Fox would be well and truly stuffed financially. They know this, its time the NRL realised this.

Now that he has bought out shares in Channel 10, the rumour is he will shut down OneHD whom I thought would be a bit of a competitor to Fox Sports.

The FTA channels are. Fox force a lot more people to subscribe with 5 from 8 games only on Foxtel, they have to pay for that unlike the current arrangements. If we get someone who can actually negotiate we'll do ok, can you imagine what would happen to Foxtel's subscription base if there were only 3 games a week on pay tv? The NRL is their biggest subscription driver.

ONE HD is. Offer them some games.
I wouldn't be surprised if ONE HD doesn't make it to the end of the year, let alone to the next contract.

But are the FTA channels competitors for fox? Haven't we been told that the portion of NRL and AFL matches they do pay for is all they can afford. Can they bid for and do they even want the rest of the games?

I can't see one FTA channel wanting to bid to get 6 games a week leaving Fox 3 (with expansion) but I could see two FTA channels making a play for that many games.Say Ch9 bid ofr 2 Friday nights plus Sunday afternoon games, Ch10 bid for 2 Saturday games and a Sunday evening game leaving Fox one Saturday, Sunday and Monday game. This would screw Fox subscriptions and they know it, danger of course is now Ch10 are in bed with Fox they will collude to prevent this happening.

At end of day it will come down to how many channels seriously would like NRL and if they are willing to get into a bidding war with each other.

Out of interest does anyone know what the NRL gets in $'s for overseas showing of the NRL? I'm guessing not much as it never gets mentioned in the income media pieces.

There's three FTA channels to compete for the games, I'm sure they don't want clashes but we don't have to bend over for News Corp. Especially when they don't make up half the NRL board anytime now. Well, some time in the next year hopefully. f**k me they're dragging their feet with the IC.
