Doesn't surprise me. I have said several times that expansion probably won't happen in 2013.

The NRL will probably want a year under the new TV deal to give the current clubs a bit of a financial "booster" to stabilise the comp as it is. I'd expect expansion to occur in 2014, and the impact on current clubs along with financial return from media/Sponsorship will be the two most important conciderations in issuing any new licence.

This is why the Bears seem so unlikely; but these are not things they can control. It will be Perth and a Queensland side in 2014, or nothing.

So I am thinking 10/One will have a real run at the NRL more and more each day.

They are playing the Matty Johns movie tomorrow night at 8:30pm.

They also have a new ONE_NRL twitter account (but they do not have a AFL one and currently hold the rights)...

I know this all seems trivial but in the big scheme of things these a small steps to showing their commitment and change of direction, IMO.

LOOK I just wanna say one thing about the central coast.

I'm sorry....IT IS A GOOD IDEA.

for 2003-6.

Not 20011 or beyond

Sorry guys, I truly think the comp has outgrown such a team for now. Unless its a relocation.

sounds like "tv time-outs" they've had in the US for years ( eg - NBA, NFL, NHL )

Yeah, it's in the same vein as that quarter time break after the 20 minute mark that's been suggested. I guess this is just a sign that they're seriously considering it. It would work a treat on a Sunday afternoon if the coverage could run from 1:30pm through to 6:00pm.

The only way I see them squeezing this stuff in on a Friday night though is to either start the coverage at 7pm on 10 or cut out some of the promo/panel stuff (which I'd say is most likely). Check out some of the NFL coverage - they do their roster line ups during the opening minutes like in our 2nd game.

Really on a Friday, the first game coverage could have a brief intro header of about 20-30 seconds. Then when the coverage cuts in, it should be a quick snippet of 20-30 second of the pre-game set up (i.e. describing the factors leading into the game over footage of the build up/crowds coming in) - then cut to the players coming out of the tunnel with the commentary lead in over that.

The Australian said:
Meanwhile, the NRL is investigating the feasibility of introducing specialised stoppages in play as it looks to make the game more attractive to television and to keep pace with the AFL over broadcasting rights.
It is understood the idea is being driven by consultancy firm LEK, which has been hired by the NRL to help maximise revenue from the next television deal.
The breaks would be tailored around existing stoppages such as dropouts and conversions and would guarantee broadcasters the opportunity to sell advertising with a greater level of certainty.
The issue for the NRL is making sure the game doesn't lose its level of attrition. It is a difficult balancing act given the need for the game to secure a windfall from its next television contract.
"We are working with LEK and the club reps on our broadcasting committee to look at innovations that will be attractive to the networks and therefore help deliver the lucrative rights deal that we expect to get for the game," NRL chief executive David Gallop said.

You heard it here first. The push for guaranteed breaks for television was an inevitable development as the cost of the rights pushes higher (and thus becomes harder to pay for). Hopefully we do it sensibly and on our terms.

As I said when I raised it earlier in this thread, I'd have no problem with two minute breaks between conversions, successful penalty and field goals, and the restart. It's a natural break in the game where one segment has completed and the game resets with a kickoff. There is no pressure to get the game restarted in any particular timeframe.

I'm more worried by suggestions of introducing a break around dropouts. The length of the break between the ball becoming dead and the dropout being taken is a crucial component as the defensive team seeks to survive the sustained pressure on their line.

Effectively we currently have a 40 second "shot clock" on this restart. If the suggestion is we guarantee a 30 second television break, followed by a 10 second "shot clock" then I'm OK with it. Still not a natural break in my book as the dropout is really a continuation of the same segment of play.

Leigh.

Quarterly "drinks" breaks in today's Penrith v Newcastle match...

18:31 - Scrum on halfway line (length ~1:30)

59:00 - Scrum 45 out from feeder's goal line (length 1:45)

that ratings report link is not for last week and there is no footy on it

Scroll down mate. It's the prelims for Week 11.

The number will come down slightly but still be around the 1.3 million mark.

By my count it's the 2nd Rugby League game this year to rate higher than 1 million, with the All Stars game just sneaking over.

29 more weeks to go!

I suggested it a couple of years back. I too looked at NFL, seemed logical to me. And painless. Absolutely.

mmmm - what if a team who's trailing on the scoreboard wants a quick restart from a dropout ( to attempt a short kick & gain possession ? )

Interest talk of AFL rights today about 4 minutes into this http://www.skynews.com.au/video/?vId=457817&cId=Programs&play=true

If the AFL don't even get $800 million i wonder if someone is saving coin for RL?

time will tell

Its interesting to hear someone inside the business comunity say this. Im not worried about what the afl rights get, good luck to them; I just want to see the NRL go well.
As a note I believe that the last deal had a contra component of just over 10% so it wouldnt suprise me if they come close to $800M in cash plus the contra making it close to $900M in total..? Half the reason why we see so much afl in sydney is due to the contra.. drives me nuts!

Not a fat bertha's chance of the AFL deal being south of 800 million. I hope the NRL finally get's the deal it deserves, David Gallop should resign if he agrees to anything less than 900 million.
I am not sure either code's deal will breach the billion mark but I would wager the AFL has the better chance.
