The Utility Bench Spot Debate

I have been hearing for months and months (keep it up - it's interesting) about who will fill that number 14 bench spot.

I myslef believe Marsh should wear that number 14, coming on for Riddell. This allows our dummy half combination to remain incredibly potent and our halves to keep focused.

Others, however, say that Marsh is an Origin player and shouldn't play second fiddle to Riddle. To this, I have two points to raise:

(1) In my view, Cameron Smith has the Queensland number 9 jersey nicely wrapped up in a neat little package. It's his and will be for a while. So Marsh is not the incumbent Qld hooker

(2) IF Buderus didn't play Origin for the Blues, who do you think would play hooker?

I think it's not too far-fetched to suggest it would be something like:

9. Riddell with 14. Wing

Thus in a way, Riddell could also be an Origin player in the future, if given the opportunity.

So I open the can of worms - who realistically has the best shot at the number 14 jersey and why do you credit that person with the honour?

it should go
6 Morris
7 Smith

9 Riddell

14 Marsh

IMO cos i have my worries about PJs fitness - however in saying that my dad was talking to Matt Peterson the other day (yes flatch, Matt Peterson!!) and he pretty much confirmed PJ is starting #7

I dont think PJ at 7 will last. Smith will play his way into contention.

I would like to see PJ at hooker, but he does OK at halfback.

And apparently Henderson is a good hooker too, so...

I'd like to see PJ at 14 as well. He has said himself that his BEST POSITION is at Hooker. Anyway the only reason that Smith may play PJ at 7 at the start of the season is too take the heat and expectation off T Smith. Let see what Brian does in the trials that should be a good guide.

i have flash backs of '01 when he was off the bench (when my bubsy wasn't #14) and he did good - little and speedy around tired forwards. Using him the whole game takes away his utility advantage (ie/ either half or hooker) and makes him just another skinny halfback

but as i said
however in saying that my dad was talking to Matt Peterson the other day (yes flatch, Matt Peterson!!) and he pretty much confirmed PJ is starting #7

Yeah good point.

I mean you yourself have huge wraps on Timmy, and I have been told that the way he trains is great. Yelling, arrogant, talkative - exactly what you want in a halfback.

Sounds like he's too good not to get a go.

Yes, good point. I forgot about him.

But since then, Riddell has played City-Country and matured as a player. Plus he can kick goals.

So I would be bold enough to suggest he might just pip Priddis for a spot.

if he can keep his appetite in check that is...

although i've always said that Brian did wonders for our beloved Tooks, and once Tooks left he stacked on the kaygee's again - BS is probably the best coach for players like Deano and Piggie to play under

True.

But Widders had weight issues which seem under control now.

And I am sure players such as Cayless, Cannings and Tsoulos (due to injury) would have had weight issues, and last report I had was that both Aaron and Justin have becomer leaner and meaner than last year.

If Marsh plays out his career at parra he ain't going to be a bench player.

Would Camron Smith have got the oppertunity to play SOO if Marsh hadn't got injuried? I remember Marsh being a very very good dummy half at the Warriors.

Luke Priddis would be the next inline.

As I posted elsewhere:

You don't necessarily have to move anyone. Mateo (or anyone else in the 14 for that matter) could well pack into the scrum at hooker - its no longer a specialist role anymore - leaving Marsh and Morris to play at 6 and 7. Marsh and Riddell will share the acting half role anyway so the only real change is that Morris may play first receiver from time to time. Given Marsh's impact from acting half why stop him getting in there. Mateo can quite easily stand at second receiver if the need arises but in most cases it really should be a forward running onto the ball in that case anyway.

Its not that big a change really when you sit back and look at it.

I'm another for Mateo off the bench in the 14.

Also, PJ will clearly be our 'strike' player so to speak, arguably he will be one of our most important players.....can we really afford NOT to have him on the fieldas much as possible?
