So, was it a legitimate match? Or basically an excuse to get Lesnar vs. Austin set up?

Well it was a match, then ended in a no contest because Lesnar attacked Austin. It was just an excuse to build the Lesnar/Austin/Goldberg feud up for Wrestlemania. Wasn't an actual full on match though.

What was Batista's reason for giving up the Heavyweight Championship in the latest Smackdown? Which Curt Angle went on to win a Battle Royal.

Batista's been working through a back injury for a few months (hence the lack of title defences), but badly damaged his tricep working a house show match against Mark Henry over the weekend (one before last). It was shown that it wasn't an injury he could work through, so the WWE decided it best to get the title off him and give him some time to recover.

b). Not sure. Has he been around since Undertaker beat him senseless at Armageddon?

Time Warner still owned it (after buying out Turner) and had the intention of selling it to a Fusient backed Eric Bischoff consortium.

That is one view.

Another view is that at the time of the WWE takeover, it was owned one half by Vince McMahon (who had just won it off of Shane McMahon in a survivor series match, thanks to the dastardly actions of Kurt Angle) and one half by a distinguished consortium that had financed Shane McMahons original purchase of WCW from Time Warner. That consortium was later revealed to be owned by the Nature Boy Ric Flair.
