kids and schools, it's the only way! That's were it all starts and that is where we really need to keep our focus. After that it is corporate $'s, we need to make sure our game is the most attractive to businesses and that means a clean image, decent corporate facilties at grounds and strong National media coverage. Finally making sure fans are engaged. Interesting to see some comments from residents of Blacktown in that survey feeling the area wasn't supported by Penrith or Parra and therefore an AFL team would carve out a market.
The comment from memory was from ONE person who said AFL COULD carve out a market. It won't. Why? Quite simple - even for you.

THER IS NO STADIUM IN BLACKTOWN AND ANZ IS FURTHER THAN PARRAMATTA OR PENRITH!!!!!!

If that has no impact on you, consider how excited you would be if the following press release ever emerged from Gallop's desk:
REDS BACK FOR 2012
The NRL Board has decided to re-admit the Perth Reds into the National Competition for 2012. NRL CEO David Gallop said that Perth was neglected by other sports and the city would embrace the NRL and become a Rugby League powerhouse. The new club will train at MES stadium, and play all of their home games out of Brookvale Oval.........

frickin hell Blacktown to Homebush is 3,000kms? Geez Sydney is big, no wonder fans there don't travel!

You might like to take a peek at the WC thread and notice the bit about building a new stadium in Blacktown, want to lay bets that it won't be a RL stadium?

I would be giving these mis guided fools a long hard cup of reality... If anybody has any personal or business dealings with them... I would be expressing my disappointment at their disloyality...

Want to lay bets it won't be an AFL stadium? How does a soccer ground differ from a League ground you dingbat?

Unless you think Sheedy is so fantastic he'll convince soccer to change the grounds they use to AFL grounds worldwide.............

Do y9ou seriously think Blacktown residents will flock to AFL because they are sick of the 'neglect' from Parra and Penrith, and travel FURTHER to watch a game?

I've seen that report (stadium to be built at Blacktown for WC bid). I was also wondering the same. We all know who would love a 40,000 seat stadium at Blacktown don't we?.

Whenever anyone from the NRL or a club talks about AFL in public they have to call it AFL. Everyone already does but it will reinforce it. There's one thing that will ruin any hope thye have of attracting young men to the game and that's rampant homophobia.
I like it! And it has the added advantage of getting any of those pillow biters out of our game and into the AFL.

We don't have to do anything. It will die off naturally. By Rd10, the fumble ballers will lose morale playing in front of empty stadiums.
Funny that, see cos unlike NRL, any AFL team is sure to get a big crowd every 2nd week at a minimum. AFL average crowd is 38,000, NRL 16,000.

They dont need big home crowds, they will at least will get good away crowds.

O think there is a very good chance the AFL will pressure them into making sure any new ground built is adaptable to be home for this new team post WC. I also think there is a very good chance the NRL won;t even be thinking about it!

No I very much doubt they will "flock" to an AFL team but I am not foolish enough to think that over the next 25 years they won't be able to build up a solid fanbase of 20,000+ given how much financial support they have to create hype and market the hell out of it.

This is bigger than just GWS it also concerns the GC team as well.

If these new teams are going to be successful they need the money and support of the Melbourne AFL clubs. If they fail it will be because they have turned into white elephants.

How do we do that?

1 - Go head to head with scheduling.
Remember when 16,000 turned up to a game at homebush for the swans? The Melbourne AFL establishment really, really hated that. They were even a little shocked. Crowd figures are what the AFL hangs it's hat on soooo much.
If the NRL schedules big matches with the Tigers, Eels and Bulldogs at the same time as GWS matches (and maybe get those teams to do some decent publicity for the games) then they will not only steal away potential paying punters but also TV viewers.

2 - FTA broadcast at the same time as home games.
There is no doubt that if we let the AFL get a time slot to themselves then the lounge chair viewers will give it a go. We have to take away all their oxygen. We will always beat them in a straight fight for TV ratings, which is their ultimate goal, so how about we step into the ring with them at the same time.

3 - Let them poach players for top dollar prices.
All they have as an advantage over NRL is money. If they want to lure away a Jarryd Hayne or Michael Jennings at ridiculous overs then let them. Don't let a club get into financial trouble by getting into a bidding war. Let them lose money with bad financial decisions instead.

4 - Lobby government to improve current stadia rather than build new ones
We already have a waste of space out at homebush. Let them inherit this turd instead of letting politicians chasing votes from building new grounds for these teams. Hell knows there are several grounds in Sydney and regional NSW that deserve any money like that before any fly-by-night AFL side.

We can really turn the GWS and GC into white elephants for the AFL. They have the arrogance to think that their money can buy them love anywhere they go. We have to show them what we think of that attitude.

Totally agree, if they can get the hype up in Sydney like they did for teh Dogs v Parra semi and schedule at least one Western Sydney side at home and on FTA in direct competition to the GWC home schedule then we will suffocate them for attention. Between the 4 clubs I am sure it is possible, only difficulty will be the fact they will be sharing teh same stadium with the Dogs so they won't be able top go head to head with them for home scheduling.

Ideally we would want them to play a Sunday afternoon at home then we make sure we have at least two Sydney blockbusters to go against them on a Sunday afternoon. Doubt Gallop is thinking of this though!

They all look to have a rich history in AFL cheerleading...not sure why principals in our public school system are getting involved in the establishment of a professional football franchise....I hope none of the resources of the NSW education department are being used to support the establishment of this business.

Re #2. They already schedule Swans games on Saturday because there is no NRL on FTA. We need to get at least one Saturday game on FTA.

Most principals are middle aged women. The Swans strongest supporter base is middle aged women. Blacktowns mayor agreed to the AFL team in the area due in part to the urging of his wife, a middle aged woman? My daughters are forced to do auskick at school where the principal is... that's right, a middle aged woman.

We need to trump that Auskick sh*t, once that is done, the battle is half over. Not that it's much of a battle, GWS will get crowds that regular AFL fans think are pathetic if it's Rugby League crowd, but they'll crow about it. 25,000 people isn't very many people.

All we need to do is keep our noses clean. Not giving those hysterical idiot mothers who write into papers talking about making their children play AFL ammunition is good.

we need to remeber that for a time we were the countries number one sport- and the result was super league. however there were some good ideas. the storm and the perth reds, brisbanes second team.decreasing number of sydney teams were all valid points. Think, if souths and cronulla had merged then, would souths have ever been kicked out? would cronulla be on the ropes now.? if penrith and paramatta merged, would they not be an ultimate mega super duper club that would crush everyone into oblivion via the huge junior base, would this superpower team winning many a title with all locals have been enough to repel even the idea of a GWS AFL team. me think so. HAd we gone all to superleague- life would be much better. Conference systen is the way to go

I agree with all that, except for the conference. A sydney conference would have no travelling costs, that would be unfair to the others.
