Thought he did a good job on yesterday's game. But I did have the tv muted so that might be why.

I'm not a fan per se. But I don't dislike him either. There needs to be a balance between "big" personalities and guys that just facilitate the flow. That's his role. Sterlo is a bit the same, if you think about it--albeit offering better analysis, obviously.

I've noticed this too. Whenever there is an inocuous half break he sounds like he is calling a 100 metre try.

I cant listen to him anymore. He just goes "off" way too much for things that dont require 110db

The worst part is, when he starts yelling, he actually starts choking. It's very hard to listen to and he needs to fix it.

It's disgraceful that in 20 years of rugby league coverage, Nine blooded one young commentator and the promptly decided to show him the door when one of the Rays got his panties in a knot. Other than that it's just a bunch of former players who now speak well enough on TV that they're just above not being an embarrassment.

Imagine if Rabs walked away tomorrow, we'd be stuck with Hadley and Gilbert

ch9 are like some league clubs. Why nuture the grass roots when you can just buy other teams talent. Thing is, that Ch9 recruitment / retention is like the Sharks.

What does everybody think of Gould's commentary? I personally think it's shit. I know he's a brilliant annalist and all but he mostly leaves his intelligence at home and talks garbage.

There really is not very many good commentators at all. Vossy is basically the only one. Rabs is decent value just for the energy he brings to the game, even if he misfires now and then.

Dan Ginnane has the same problem when he commentates for 2MMM.

In all seriousness I think too many of them are doing their "Big Darrell Eastlake" impressions from the initial days of State of Origin. The influence seems all pervading in the league commentary ranks.

Daryl had the booming voice. Ginane does not have this.

Have a listen to the differences in commentary here...

Gilbert:

Voss:

The difference is astronomical.

I know Ginane doesn't but his style is very much akin to Eastlake's voice of no voice, that was my point. Too many commentators are mimicing, be it consciously or subconsciously, Eastlake's style.

I don't have to put up with Gilbert too much but there's no doubting he's woeful.

Tim Gilbert isn't a very good commentator but you can tell he genuinely likes Rugby League so at least his heart is in the right place

Too much empty noise of nothing with Gilbert....he will call a set and call the dummy half and first receiver, then there is nothing as he either just watches or imo it just gets too much for him....really noticed how bad he is last Sunday
