Time for Moylan to 5/8

It's not like Moylan was an obvious option for NSW, He only got in the team through injury and even after that people were still questioning that decision by Daley. Im not saying he wouldn't do a job at 5/8th but why would penrith compete against the premiers to buy TMM if the ultimate goal was for moylan to move in the halves and turn him into "the next Darren Lockyer"

That's just it , it's clear the ultimate goal isn't to move Moylan , which by many peoples reckoning is the wrong move.

Maybe TMM will be better than Moylan , but I'd back Moylan to be better right now.

Its what griffin wants more than anything. I'd like to personally see them play a few games together before I make a judgement

Yes , and look at Griffin's record with halves in Brisbane.

Brought in an ageing Scott Prince to play in the halves over Corey Norman , then playing Josh Hoffman at 5/8 after he lost both Prince & Norman.

His past gives me no confidence at all that he can identify the better 5/8

Have TMM and Cleary played together in the lower grades?

Tom.

Not including trials I wouldn't think so.

TMM started the year in reserve grade and Cleary under 20's. I could be wrong but I thought the time Cleary moved up to reserve grade TMM was either playing NRL or out injured.

Tom, TMM is a Tigers junior so he hasn't had a chance to play with Cleary. He was signed from the Tigers and started in reserve grade not u20's. Now it looks like the plan is to start them together this season. That will be very interesting.

Big gamble to have two rookies. The Tiger's Moses and Brooks have taken a long time to get some sort of form and have been very inconsistent. One difference is we have Moylan and Cartwright to take pressure off them having to always come up with a big play. Fingers crossed, that will be enough.

I think you are right being a gamble with two rookies but when you watch Cleary play, he is so composed you would think he had been playing NRL for years. Add Wallace and Moylan to the mix helping out and I am quite confident they will form a good spine.

Cartwright has made 224 tackles at 5/8th and missed 21. Is anyone certain Moylan would be any better? I doubt his defence more then Cartwrights

love the coaches in here. No matter what position Moylan plays it will be wrong in here. Moylan is our best fullback why shift him .If you leave TMM out because he is a so called project player how can you bring Edwards in he also is a project player
We don't need to change much our squad is good just needs fine tuning

This is the issue. How many errors does he make back there. Whether he makes the runs or not we always start our sets off well with him back there. He plays 5/8th in attack anyway so what difference does the number on his back make

The biggest change would be Moylan ball playing with a fast powerful fullback sweeping around running off his hip. Right now this doesn't exist because he's the fullback

I think the other big differences will be that they can defend and they will have a dominant pack in front of them. Brooks and Moses were/are sieves in defence and not only does that hurt your confidence, but it tires you out from being targeted and probs effects your ability to order the team around effectively. Along with this the Tigers have been a bit of a rabble for quite some time whereas our guys will be coming into a side that has been aching to make the jump to contenders for 3 years now and a pack that will give them the space to settle in and be effective.

It's a gamble but I'm confident they'll be firing much quicker than Brooks/Moses.

We aren't 1/5 without Moylan this season. Far more last year for no reason the other fullbacks too many errors. Hiku is the only one i'd play back there if Moylan isn't

Yes he is composed, very similar to Gower and Brandy. Their age didn't seem to hold them back, but undoubtedly their game management got better as they got older. He is a different type of player to Brooks as well. Not as flash or elusive, but effective in an understated manner. TMM seems to be the player with the ability to pull off a miracle play with his step, speed and elusiveness. If things work out, they will be a good pair.

Good point about the pack. I know that people have moaned on here about the signing of Tamou, but for mine he is a brilliant signing. The starting pack will have oodles of metres in it and much better starch in defence. With Latu and Cartwright providing ball playing a la James Graham style, the team should be able to be more like the 2003 team where attack could come from anywhere on the field (Girdler and Sattler providing additional ball playing to complement the halves). It's much harder to defend against.

To me, the one thing we are missing now is somebody with terrifying pace over the first 40m to keep the defence in two minds and make line breaks (2003 had Rhys Wesser, Rooney and Lewis were more like DZW and Mansour, steady as she goes). Jennings would have been perfect (salary cap would be screwed though). Blake seems quick, but not over the first 20m (it's all to do with his slow leg cadence with those long legs. Needs to wind up a bit).

Yeah agree that's probably what we are missing. I love watching Blake in space, his big stride means he can get around defenders in one step but definitely doesn't burn them off the mark. I'm not sure who fills that gap but you can't have everything and we have a lot. As the squad develops and we likely see guys like Hiku, DWZ and Whare move on it could be something to priorities.

In terms of assets we have that are underutilised i think cross field kicks to Yeo, getting Grevsmuhl one on one close to the line and getting someone to stalk Cartwright for off loads would be top of the list.

Agree with all of you guys - the one missing piece now is someone with serious acceleration over 40 metres who can make line breaks running off someone's hip or from an offload.

I suspect Blake is the fastest over 100 metres in our team, but doesn't have that acceleration over 40 metres.

That said, from what little I've seen of TMM, he seemed to have some pretty serious acceleration (like Benji in his early days). Perhaps he will help in this area for us.

Good shout. With Moylan and Cartwright likely to spend a bit of time at second receiver it could free up Martin a bit to be that savvy Coote style supporting option.

I wonder how fast Josh Hall is? I have seen him catch high balls to his wing and then run full length of field for a try.

Josh Hall really interests me , could be a huge asset to the team. His catching ability would be the perfect opposite wing for Mansour. Hopefully his defence is coming along.

The times I have seen him. He's ok in the defence it's when we are on kick return he struggles. kinda a big part of being a winger. Maybe if he bulks up over the offseason
