I sincerely don't understand the Burro love, to me it seems like without Tew this deal was all but f**ked with him at the helm.

But the thing is it was never Burro's decision to make to start off with. Always a board decision, never one individuals decision. He was never "at the helm" of this deal. He could negotiate all he wanted, however it was never his decision in the end whether it happened or not.

Burro has done a good job running the club over the last few years with the limited resources that he has had to run it with. The financial results will show that. I know that perverse brought up that other clubs have the best of everything on the main forum, however those clubs also run at a loss and have assets behind them to allow that to happen. We don't have that luxury, however that is not Burro's fault.

He has been found out as being less than enthusiastic about the Tinkler deal and has appeared that way in the media. That is a shame that this is tarnishing a term where he turned the club around from regular losses to profitability.

Get the facts: Stone urges members to attend Tinkler information night
BY JOSH LEESON
25 Mar, 2011 04:00 AM

KNIGHTS coach Rick Stone, captain Kurt Gidley and legend Andrew Johns have joined Nathan Tinkler’s TV ad campaign, but Stone yesterday urged club members to educate themselves fully on the details of the takeover before making their decision.
Stone and Gidley personally endorsed Tinkler’s bid to buy the Knights in a full-page advertisement in yesterday’s Herald and also filmed a television commercial yesterday afternoon at Belmont to further support the plan.
Johns, the Knights’ greatest player, yesterday became the most high-profile Tinkler backer by appearing in his own advertisement shot in Sydney.
Both ads will start airing on Monday before members vote on the takeover on Thursday night.
Stone is a believer in the privatisation plan but said members should attend the Tinkler Sports Group’s information night at Newcastle Panthers on Monday to educate themselves on all the facts.
‘‘It might be my personal opinion [to vote yes], but I definitely want the members to show up on Monday and ask questions themselves and find out a little bit about the Tinkler group and their vision,’’ Stone said.
‘‘I think the biggest disparity here has been the lack of information and lack of understanding of information, and that’s been a little frustrating for all parties.
‘‘This would be the opportune time for all members to ask some hard questions and look the people in the eye that are likely to take over our club and will have the massive responsibility of ownership of this place.’’
Tinkler is expected to address members on Monday, along with TSG executive chairman Ken Edwards and chief executive Troy Palmer.
It will be TSG’s best chance to shore up the 75 per cent of the vote needed to take over the Knights.
Stone said a perception that members would lose a say in their club was the biggest concern from feedback he had received about the Tinkler proposal.
‘‘The members have always had a say in their club and they always need to have one because it’s an important ingredient in how it was set up, and I’d like to think that needs to remain consistent regardless of who owns our football club,’’ he said.
‘‘Under the Tinkler model I think that will be the case and people need to ask questions along those lines to make sure their voice is heard and they have some place where they can feel like they’re making a difference.’’
TSG has pledged to erase the Knights’ estimated $3 million of accumulated debts, underwrite sponsorship for $10 million annually for the next decade and inject $2.5million a year into junior development.
The deal would make Stone among the best resourced coaches in the NRL.
‘‘There’s a lot of other things around the Tinkler bid that could help the Knights in resources and facilities and possibly some presence and clout in the league,’’ Stone said.
Stone is particularly excited by the injection of funding into junior development.
‘‘One of the biggest things is making sure our juniors are resourced well,’’ he said.
‘‘Our junior representative sides, our development program.
‘‘It’s fair to say our development program has one of the best league-growing areas in Australia and traditionally its continued to produce players and it will continue to produce players albeit in a different cycle.’’

The patrons of profit

26 Mar, 2011 01:00 AM
IN October last year, Fairfax newspapers published a story explaining how Nathan Tinkler turned $1 million into $400 million in just six months in 2005-06 with the purchase and sale of the Middlemount coalmining prospect in Queensland.
The article told how Mr Tinkler "knocked on every door in Sydney" looking for finance early on, eventually selling 15 per cent of his company, Custom Mining, to 60 clients of a Sydney stockbroker for $2.5 million of seed money. That lucky 60 got their money back many, many times over.
What the story does not say is that a small group of Newcastle investors led by prominent businessman and Bradken director Phil Arnall also looked closely at the Middlemount deal, but that they knocked it back.
Mr Arnall has social and business connections with two other important people in this story, Andrew Poole and Craig Ransley.
Mr Poole is the public face of the "patrons' trust" - a trio (so far) of would-be benefactors prepared to put $6 million over four years into the Newcastle Knights rugby league club, while leaving the club in public ownership.
Mr Poole and the Tinkler group have been engaged in a series of tit-for-tat full-page ads in the Newcastle Herald, putting their respective cases for the Knights.
Mr Poole worked with Mr Arnall at Bradken, which, coincidentally, supplied two of the past three Knights chief executives, in the form of Ian Bonnette and Steve Burraston.
Mr Ransley, a coal industry entrepeneur who introduced Mr Tinkler to Mr Arnall and others, is a partner with Mr Poole in the ResCo group of mining companies. Mr Poole and Mr Arnall were also on the board of Mr Ransley's previous business, the Tesa group.
Mr Poole is also a director and prominent shareholder with NuCoal - the company behind the Doyles Creek training mine proposed for Jerrys Plains.
Some Tinkler supporters have encouraged a belief that the patrons' trust was at least partly motivated by revenge or sour grapes against Mr Tinkler over the missed opportunity with Middlemount.
Mr Poole, Mr Arnall and Mr Ransley deny these claims.
"I have never met Nathan Tinkler in my life - except maybe bumping into him once in a lift - and I was never approached to invest with him," Mr Poole said yesterday.
"Craig [Ransley] and Phil [Arnall] have done business with him but I wasn't there at the time. I don't care who wants to buy the Knights as I said the other day, it could be the Dalai Lama. All I want is for people to know there is an alternative to privatisation."
Mr Arnall, whose other board seats include Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, AJ Lucas and Ludowici, was on the Tesa board at the time of the Middlemount negotiations.
Mr Arnall said Tesa did buy the labour-hire section of Custom Mining from Mr Tinkler.
"I've told this story, against myself, to all of my friends, how I was the one who didn't make $42 million by not going with Nathan," Mr Arnall said yesterday.
"I wish Nathan very well in all he has done. He has defied all odds in what he has done and I respect him for it.
"To the extent that I could have been part of it all, well, we made our decision at the time and he went on to prove everyone wrong."
Mr Arnall acknowledges the Bradken links to the Knights, but says they are "coincidental" as much as anything and not unusual in a town like Newcastle where business people often socialise together.
According to the October newspaper article, Mr Tinkler "took an enormous punt" on the Middlemount lease because conventional wisdom held the coal was of little value.
Mr Tinkler, it seems, saw geological similarities between Middlemount, near Moura, and the Bengalla mine near Muswellbrook.
Mr Tinkler's instincts proved correct.
In June 2007 he sold Custom Mining to Macarthur Coal for $265 million.
His partners took their $65 million slice in cash, while Mr Tinkler took his $178 million windfall in Macarthur shares.
Six months later, Macarthur's share price had gone from $8 to $20 and he sold his stake for a personal return of $445 million.
Two years later, he made a similar leap with the Maules Creek proposal at Gunnedah. Maules Creek had been on Coal and Allied's books for years and when Mr Tinkler bought it in late 2009 for $480 million, the market reaction was that Mr Tinkler had heavily overpaid the Rio Tinto subsidiary.
In August last year, Mr Tinkler floated Aston Resources - major asset Maules Creek - for $1.2 billion, or nearly three times what he paid for it.
The shares began at less than $6 and, again, much of the market commentary was sceptical of the float. The same shares this week are $9.30.
Whatever people think about Nathan Tinkler, his nose for a profit is extraordinary.
And after humble beginnings he has the money to make things happen.

Edwards urges members to get to Tinkler talk
BY JAMES GARDINER
28 Mar, 2011 04:00 AM

KNIGHTS members will get an opportunity to hear firsthand the plans billionaire Nathan Tinkler has for the club at an information meeting at Newcastle Panthers tonight.
Tinkler will address the meeting and take questions on his offer to buy the NRL club.
The meeting is the last planned before the ballot on Thursday at which members will vote on the offer.
Tinkler needs 75 per cent of the vote in favour for the mining magnate to assume control of the financially embattled Knights.
Tinkler has previously met with the old boys club and other groups but this is the first time he has been available to all members. Tinkler Sports Group executive chairman Ken Edwards, who will also address the meeting, said they expected a crowd of up to 1500 at the forum.
‘‘It is a great opportunity for members to listen to us present our case and our credentials,’’ Edwards said.
‘‘It is a great opportunity to ask any questions they still might have, and it is a great opportunity for members to lodge their proxy vote and get it done. To get out two nights – Monday and Thursday – might be difficult for some. It is an opportunity for some to come and listen and lodge their proxy.
‘‘It is the first time Nathan has been available to talk to all members. It is not just voting members we are inviting.
‘‘A big part of what we want to do in the future is build on the current members club and making it bigger and more vibrant.’’
Tinkler’s offer, which has been endorsed by the Knights board, wipes out the club’s debt of more than $3.5million, underwrites sponsorship for at least $10million a year for 10 years and is backed by a $20million bank guarantee.
‘‘We are getting strong support everywhere we go but our greatest concern is that too many people will think it is such a good offer that it is over the line and they don’t need to vote,’’ Edwards said. ‘‘We are urging people that do believe in what we are trying to do with the Knights to make sure they get their proxy in.’’
The meeting starts at 7pm. Members will have to show their membership card if they want to submit a proxy.

I'm guessing a number of people here will be going, plus the Herald will be covering it with their streaming video thingy again? I hope so anyway as I'm planning on watching it tomorrow

So, just confirming, it's not imperative you turn up to the meeting tonight right? Thursday night is THE night?

Yes, tonight is just an information night. Thursday night is vote night. If you have made up your mind and don't need to hear from Tinkler and co tonight then there is no need to attend.

Also, proxies have to arrive at the club by 7pm tomorrow night to be included in the vote.

So the proxy forms that we received in the mail need to be filled out and dropped off at the supporters shop by tomorrow? And then we need to do the same again on Thursday night?

No if you are going to vote on the night then you just do that.

If you can't attend on the night, like me then you fill in the proxy voting form which basically provides the person, who you give the proxy to the ability to vote on your behalf.

So in theory 2000 people could give their proxies to Paul Harrogan who then has the ability to vote for that many people on their behalf.

Hope that makes sense.

Ambition...Nathan Tinkler outlines his plans for the Knights at a meeting in Newcastle last night.

CLUB legend Paul Harragon last night declared "greatness is just around the corner" for Newcastle Knights if the club votes in favour of Nathan Tinkler's $100 million takeover proposal.
Harragon spoke passionately in favour of the Tinkler bid at a members' information forum attended by the millionaire mining magnate and more than 1000 members at Newcastle Panthers.
The club's future will be decided at an extraordinary members meeting on Thursday night.
"The sky is the limit," Harragon told the audience. "We don't want to be strugglers anymore. We want to be the best.
"We can finally be big hitters in rugby league and that's what excites me. I can't comprehend it [voting against the bid]."
Tinkler, who received a huge ovation, told the gathering his only motivation in wanting to take over the club was to give the Knights the best possible opportunity to be successful and win premierships.
"I've been lucky enough to be successful in business and I want to give something back," he said. Former Knights stars Mark Sargent, Michael Hagan, Steve Simpson and Steve Crowe were also part of the official table, as were current coach Rick Stone and captain Kurt Gidley.
Tinkler could be out of pocket as much as $8 million in his first week as owner if his bid is given the green light.
The club is understood to be in debt for between $3.4 million and $4.6 million, which Tinkler has agreed to settle immediately.

The NBN online recording cut off just after the guy asked about engaging the sponsors...which was pretty much spot on 1 hour after the meeting started...were there many questions after that? I know I would've missed Chief's speech, but just curious. Hopefully NBN uploads the whole recording later on :)

Foundation member, Judy says the meeting has led her to change her vote. "I arrived with my mind made up," she said.
"I was certainly leaning towards a 'no' vote.
I just had terrible trouble letting go of the community thing, but after hearing everyone speak I would feel selfish.
I feel that I cannot deny the players, the facilities, the life they're being offered."

Comments like that are encouraging.

My only problem is in the voting system employed, after last nights meeting a mate of mine who is a member BUT NOT A VOTING MEMBER was able to lodge his proxy AFTER the meeting AND NO-ONE ASKED IF HE WAS ELIGIBLE , they just allowed him to place his proxy.

Hopefully someone does check members numbers against eligibility.

That's interesting in itself as email correspondence I had from the Knights Office stated that voting information had only been sent to those members eligible to vote.

From watching the live broadcast, that only went for an hour there appeared to be a positive mood in the meeting. I would have felt alot more comfortable if this was the last word prior to the vote rather then the last word being from the Patrons Trust.

Apparently there is a full page ad in todays paper that is authorised by Steve Barrett. Andrew Poole was interviewed by ABC Local Radio this morning and when asked about who paid for the ad, he replied that Steve Barrett authorised it so I assume he paid for it.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers has full control over the voting process and count.
