So are you saying if Carney extends we will most likely get Dobson?

But if Carney doesnt sign... what happens?

Dunno where Dobson comes into any picture of trade talks as far as i'm aware. So the answer to your first question is NO(as far as i know).

As to your second question, i will assume you mean if Carney doesn't sign with WT is what you are trying to ask.
If Carney stays at Canberra, my guess will be the WHOLE deal is off meaning one of our players will not go there as the TRADE OFF. But the main problem lies with our player who doesn't WANT to go THERE. But then again Henry did wave a fat cheque in front of his nose.
If there was nothing being discussed behind closed doors, then i think you would have found the Raiders would've re-extended their GUN halfback's contract already.

Raiders receive ultimatum

CANBERRA return to training this Monday afternoon with a staggering 14 players of the 30-man squad coming off contract at the end of next year.
The message from the Raiders hierarchy to the players is simple - perform or be dumped.
Canberra join Wests Tigers, Newcastle and the Gold Coast Titans in returning to the training paddock on Monday.
"We don't have many players off contract this year but we have a heap off at the end of next season," Raiders chief executive Don Furner said.
"Neil (Henry, coach) inherited a lot of players so this will allow Neil to have more say in the players he has in his squad.
"We will be looking closely at the players coming off contract and Neil will be making sure they perform to their expectations.
"There will be quite a lot of competition in 2008.
"In our end-of-season review, it was discussed with the players so they are aware of the situation."
Todd Carney will be back training next week determined to re-shape his troubled football career.
Carney had alcohol problems this year and was charged for driving unlicensed and leading police on a high-speed car chase.
It is known that Carney has support among NSW selectors. "Todd has been no trouble since that happened," Furner said.
"He knows he needs a big year on and off the field.
"His (alcohol) counselling has been good and Todd has done a lot of charity work.
"He wants a big year where he can repay the club and repay his teammates. Todd is doing extra at training and wants to be a representative player in 2008."
Canberra defied the critics again last year who claimed they would secure the wooden spoon.
Yet again, though, bookmakers believe the Raiders will finish last.
Furner said that his club was not interested in opening contract talks with Bulldogs and Test forward Willie Mason.

How about you put your money where your mouth is?

I’ll pay for your 2008 season ticket if we sign Carney for 2008. If we don’t you pay for mine.

Surprised he hasnt jumped at this deal. He may still....+pray+
I do know he's fairly tight with someone thats as close to one player concerned as anyone can be.

Thank god for that. We had better have some mega dollars available next season. You would expect Hodgson, O'Hara and possibly Galloway (paper yday said he's off contract but i thought we had him for 4 yrs). That lot would free up over 700k between em

From the Canberra Times... ive bolded the relevent parts...

The Canberra Raiders have vowed to fight "tooth and nail" to secure star halfback Todd Carney for 2009, but fear that if it comes down to a bidding war, they could lose.

Club general manager Don Furner yesterday said the Raiders had already held talks with Carney's camp about the 21 year old's future when his contract ends next year.

Asked if they were prepared to fight for the troubled footballer, Furner said: "Absolutely".

But he admitted that interest from other clubs could prove too dear.

"There could be bigger cheque books out there" Furner said.

"Toddy has indicated to Neil and I that he doesn't want to leave here. He does want to stay but you never know."

Carney reportedly earns about $200,000 a year, less than half what some of the highest NRL players Willie Mason ($450,000) and Sonny Bill Williams ($500,000+) take home.

But he told The Canberra Times that he hadn't thought of playing with any other NRL club.

In Nothern Queensland for a family wedding, Carney said his manager David Riolo had discussed with the Raiders the prospect of having his contract topped up.

"My manager didn't really talk too much, he'll just wait to see what's on paper and then I guess we'll all sit down and discuss it" Carney said.

"But Canberra is a good place and a good club and it has a good future. And, I guess, I sort of can't really see myself anywhere other than there and I'm excited to see how we go."

Carney is one of 16 first graders forced in search for new playing contracts in 2009.

His occasional halves partner Michael Dobson is also off contract along with Adrian Purtell, Colin Best, Bronx Goodwin, Marshall Chalk, David Howell, David Milne, Brett Kelly, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Terry Campese, Ben Jones, Glen Turner, Trevor Thurling, Michael Weyman and Scott Logan.

"Toddy is a priority and we've spoken to him a couple of times while he's been away on holidays and we'll speak again next week" Furner said.

"We've spent a lot of time and money on him as a junior and we don't like to see any of our juniors go, particularly ones that could be a leading playmaker in the NRL. It's always a fight to keep the best players and I'm sure we'll have one with him" he said.

Letting local talent leave the club has been an issue the Raiders are desperate to reverse. They endured the heartache of losing one of their own when Joel Monaghan exited the club in 2004 to play for the Sydney Roosters.

Furner said he didn't want to go through that again with Carney who grew up playing with Goulburn.

"We were really disappointed when Joel Monaghan left" Furner said.

"He was a local boy but the good thing is that you want them to come back. We've got a good club here and a good core of guys here and they do want to stay on."

Doesn't really say anything either way Raider, I reckon he'd be silly not to test the open market, good halves are in massive demand.

These comments/spin really leave Carney's future up in the air in limbo IMO. To me, it sounds like another club has already targetted the talented youngster.

CT are you trying to get the hopes up of all Wests Tigers fans, or are you just trying to scare the living daylights out of all the Raider supporters.

Or possibly a bit of both.

Nearly 5,000 views in just over a month.

This has to be one of the hottest topics on the League Unlimited forum at the moment.

I hope we get an answer soon because the suspense is killing me.

If it is left in the hands of Ronald i would say Carney is as good as done
But it will be Dean, not Todd:
- pedestrian centre - check
- old - check
- past it - check
- can shift to back row - check
- cheap - check

absolutely but it does seem to suggest he is keen to stay a raider so long as the price is right, particually the quote about not seeing himself/thought about playing for another club. Positive talk, but as said, its only that at this point, talk.

Im confident if canberra give him around par on other offers, he'll be a raider, it seems to mean the deal would have to be substancially better to lure him away from canberra... given we've got 14 players off contract end of 08, and TC is #1 priority, i recon we're looking good to keep him

10 November 2007 - 8:59AMEagles, Titans eyeing Carney

At least two rival NRL clubs are poised to bid for the services of Canberra Raiders star Todd Carney if he hasn't signed a contract extension by the start of the 2008 season.
The Canberra Times yesterday contacted NRL clubs to gauge their interest in Carney, who retired superstar Andrew Johns touted as a future Australian halfback earlier this week.
Seven of 15 clubs returned The Canberra Times's calls.
The Gold Coast Titans and Manly expressed interest in Carney.
The 21-year-old and his manager David Riolo are considering a contract extension.
The Goulburn product has expressed his desire to remain at the Raiders but has put off signing anything until after Canberra's trial games against Brisbane and North Queensland in February and March.
The Raiders have made re-signing Carney a priority, but would struggle in a bidding war.
Manly chief executive Grant Mayer said his club was on the lookout for quality backs for 2009.
Mayer said the club would strongly consider Carney despite his off-field troubles, which included a third conviction for a driving offence earlier this year.
"We're looking for outside backs for 2009 and he's versatile," Mayer said. "We haven't really talked about him but he's a quality player. There's obviously baggage there but if he's a good enough player I'm sure we'd certainly have a talk about him.
"If he wants to get something done before the start of the year that's a bit early for us [but] later we'd have a chat to him for sure."
Titans boss Michael Searle said his club would need to gauge his early-season form and behaviour before making contact with him.
"We'd consider him but it would just depend on how his season went this year and how he bounces back from his misdemeanours from last season," Searle said.
"On the field definitely we'd be interested in him, but I'd be lying if I said we didn't have some concerns about his off-field antics.
"If we were going to enter negotiations we'd probably enter them around about early April or mid May."
North Queensland, Parramatta and the Sydney Roosters said they were not interested in recruiting Carney, while Wests Tigers and Penrith said they would only consider him towards the end of 2008 if their current halves were struggling.
"We've got a couple of young blokes we're hoping will come up and cover that spot and if they don't we'll reassess the situation when it arises," Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said.

Penrith chief executive Michael Leary said his club was in a similar position and would wait until at least mid season before considering new halves for 2009.
The Canberra Times was unable to contact Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia yesterday, but a source close to the club said coach Ricky Stuart had a high opinion of Carney.
The Raiders have 16 players off contract at the end of next year.

if manly are interested in carney, does that mean Matt Orford will be available next year?

Jamie Lyon is hardly a class 5/8. Manly will play off the back of their Forwards in '08, the loss of Burns (however little he played) and Monaghan mean that their main playmaker is Orford by himself. Jaime Lyon won't offer anything.

Carney keen for a big season

Star Raiders playmaker Todd Carney returned to Raiders HQ today full of enthusiasm and confidence, as he began his pre-season campaign for season 2008.

Carney was a couple of days late after attending his sisters wedding, but is already talking about having a big year guiding the Green Machine to a semi-final spot.

With the pre-season just three days old Carney said he's ready to get stuck straight into some hard work, and get himself ready for a big year with his club.

"I'm really looking forward to the start of the year but we all have some work to do first during the pre-season so I'll be doing that first," Carney said. "I'm just keen to get fit and start playing footy again."

With Carney off contract at the end of 2008 there has been plenty of speculation on his future, but he said he's just concentrating on getting himself prepared for the upcoming season.

"The Raiders chose not to throw me on the scrap heap after some off field stuff and I am still thanking them for that, and it will be in my mind at contract time," he said. "Canberra's been my home for the last five years, my families close and I get on well with all the boys so the Raiders will definitely be my first option."

On the field Carney is hoping to take his game to the next level in 2008, and although representative football is in the back of his mind, his first goal is getting the Raiders over the line in a few more matches.

"My goal is to make Country this year and then at some stage hopefully go on to represent NSW, but playing good footy for the Raiders is my first priority."

Still just 21 years of age Carney is still a relatively young member of the current Raiders squad, but he said he is keen to take more responsibility within the group.

"I'm looking to take on more of a leadership role than I had last year, I'm also hoping to bring some more excitement and trying to help get us in the top eight at the end of the year," he said. "I think we'll be a better side than last year and be better for the season together."
