Valerie Adams finishes with a shot put bronze, her 4th successive podium finish in her 5th Olympics giving her 2 golds, a silver and a bronze. Will retire as an all time great but still only the second best-known sportsperson in her family after little brother Steven

Good call. Was watching her this morning. All class.

Watched Tsukimi nospam16I win her qtr final in the women's Fly boxing. Such a little champ that I'm already calling her for for the gold.

Hassan in that 1500m heat…. gets tangled and falls at the final bell, gets up, keeps running AND WINS THE HEAT. That is absolutely phenomenal. hopefully it didn’t take it all out of her because after that it’s hard to argue she’s not on another level to everyone else in the field.

I saw some wanker wrote an op-ed to that effect too. Personally I’m 100% fine with it- the point of high jump is to see who can jump the highest, and the jump-offs would rarely if ever result in a jumper actually jumping higher than they had in the regular competition as they’d be fatigueing by that point.

Ooft, tough break for the Aussie men’s team sprint cyclists there, crashed out after one of the team’s handlebars snapped on him. Probably lucky he was at the back of the pack not the front or he’d have taken the whole team out with him.

update: they were allowed to re-ride their qualifier and finished 5th, so missed the medal round, but a pretty brave effort to saddle up again for the bloke who went down, he was visibly banged up from the crash.

Pretty f**ked. I've seen bikes fall apart like that after touchdown, especially on the road...but his handlebars just sheared clean off.

Pushing shit uphill after that, even getting the restart they were 1km in to a 4km runs and then had to do that hardest part all over again. Tough. Can still ride for bronze I think.
