Number one has to be Herb Narvo. In the 1940's whilst playing for Newtown, he was also Australian heavyweight boxing champion.

As far as #4, Les Davidson built up a reputation for flogging everyone in the late 80's/early 90's. One game in 1990 he punched the crap out of Paul Sironen who was dancing around as a hard man up until then. The return game that season him and Steve Roach squared up.

It was the only time I remember Roach throwing punches. He _absolutely_ obliterated Davidson in ten seconds.

It was all class in terms if Roach's martial prowess. To this day, with most RL players still throwing arm punches, Roach is the best at the knuckle I've seen

Ahahahaha SBW, good lord. He'd spend the whole time making sure his hair was perfect and the camera was getting his "good side". Pretty boys should be excluded from this list.

So what is everyone's thoughts on this list?

Thought that was your list and was about to shoot the mouth off, but honestly how the hell can SBW be there ahead of proven hard men in Campion, Wiki, Betham and even Tallis? Still remember Wikis kick off return where he ran it back screaming and put Soliola from the roosters to sleep, Betham slaughtering casey McGuire and campion the same to webcke.

Campion hit Webcke when Webcke was being held back but 2 guys, let's not even mention the fact that Webcke can't fight for shit anyway.

Anyone can look tough on a footy field when 20 other guys are running in grabbing people at the first sign of a punch. Step in the ring and fight one on one, that'll show who the fighters are

People i saw play that weren't afraid to play a hard game or shy away from painful encounters.

Spud Carroll
Paul Harragon
Mark O'Meley (his bulldog & NSW days)
Gorden Tallis
Adrian Morley
Wally Lewis
Mark Geyer

Token mention to the psychotic duo from magpies, Donnelly and Boyd.

Ones I always thought were tough not necessarily for their punch ons but just the way they played the game as well

Garden Tallis
Monty Betham
Kevin Campion
Dean Pay
Mark O'Meley
Glen Lazarus
Adrian Morley
Shane Webcke

These guys were just tough footballers. Not all were fighters in the sense of Biffs though

Special Mention Travis Burns. Tackling machine and absolute mongrel despite being the missing 8th dwarf. Definitely punched above his weight. He was a victim of not fitting a conventional mould and while I thought letting him go was the right decision at Penrith, I loved watching him play and still think his judiciary sentence was one of the biggest jokes they've pulled out of their arses. Ruined any hope of having another Australian contract essentially.

Don't come much harder then Geoff toovey - took a flogging during his career and considering his size always got up to take more - now that is a hardman.

Hard is not being able to fight, but bringing the threat of intimidation or playing through enormous pain. These are just some but there are many more who played without having to resort to fighting to prove their toughness.

John Sattler

John Sattler playing on with a broken jaw.
Andrew Johns coming out of hospital with a punctured lung to win the 97 Grand final.
Troy Stone played the 98 Grand Final for the dogs with a broken arm.

Examples like the above are tough men.

My years in the Army demonstrated to me what truly tough men are, and I have more respect for the SASR soldiers of the Australian Army then any other men on earth, they are truly tough men.
