Fowler agrees to Blackburn move

By staff writers
September 11, 2008 FORMER England striker Robbie Fowler has agreed to a pay-as-you-play deal with Blackburn Rovers that could see him in the squad for this weekend's Barclays Premier League match against Arsenal.
The 33-year-old former Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City forward, who had most recently been playing for Championship side Cardiff, has been training with Rovers since his former Anfield and England colleague Paul Ince took over as manager at Ewood Park.

Should be in the rumours thread but the big overnight rumour is Berba -> Bayern.

Does that make sense? Competing against Klose, Toni, Podolski, Schlaudruff...surely he would be better off staying at the Toots.

schlaudraff was the fist one to leave bayern before last season ended

Back at home in A-League:

Alex Tobin signs on with Mariners

Former Socceroos captain Alex Tobin has been confirmed as the new assistant coach of A-League club the Central Coast Mariners.

Tobin, who had been the Mariners' development manager, will continue as coach of their youth team as well as serving as Lawrie McKinna's assistant for the rest of the season.

He replaces Ian Ferguson, who was recently released after being appointed as the inaugural head coach of new A-League franchise North Queensland.

"This new role won't differ too greatly from the one that I have fulfilled previously, but it is no less exciting to have been formally recognised in this fashion," Tobin said.

"I look forward to what is already shaping to be a successful campaign alongside Lawrie and an exceptional playing group that is as determined as I have seen them to win some silverware."

Tobin played 522 games in Australia's domestic competition and represented the country a record 113 times.

Meanwhile, the Mariners are confident goalkeeper Mark Bosnich will return from a hamstring injury against Wellington on October 19, the final match of his short-term contract with the club.

The former Socceroos keeper had to leave the field early during last Friday's 4-1 win over Perth, but subsequent scans showed no muscle tear.

"I'll return to training as soon as possible and with the help of the club and my teammates I'm determined to do all that I can to push my case for a starting berth against the Wellington Phoenix," Bosnich said.

Vanstrattan first pick for Gold Coast

Posted Tue Sep 30, 2008 2:26pm AEST

New A-League team Gold Coast United has announced former Juventus goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan as its first major signing.

Vanstrattan arrived with club chairman Clive Palmer by helicopter at Skilled Park at Robina earlier today.

The 26-year-old shot stopper says the time was right to return to Australia after being released from the Italian superpowers in June.

"It was a great experience to be there and play with players of the calibre of Del Piero, Trezeguet, train with Buffon and learn from that," he said.

"But it's time for me to be in a situation where I play regularly to show my talent to the national team as well, cause that's something that I really hold high as one of my goals for the next World Cup."

The Newcastle Jets have secured the services of Olyroos skipper Mark Milligan for seven weeks as a guest player, starting in early November.

The talented defender has also signed with the club for the 2009/2010 Hyundai A-League season.

Milligan has been without a club now for several months, following a number of trials with European clubs that ultimately proved fruitless.

“We’re delighted to have a player of Mark’s calibre joining our squad. I feel that he will add a significant amount to our playing group in regards to his ability and experience and he should slot straight into the team,” said Jets coach Gary van Egmond.

“It’s great to have Mark signed for now and next season also. It boosts our squad, not only in terms of personnel, but it gives a lift to those boys already here.

"I think it really shows our ambition as a club and that we’re serious about our title defence, and creating a strong squad into the future.”

“I’m looking forward to working with him for the duration of his time in Newcastle."

The 23-year-old's first game for the defending A League champions will be against Perth in Round 11.

You have to laugh at the Gold Coast...all the talk of the worlds great attackers and then they want Culina as their marquee who is about as threatening as a wet mop.
