Wolfsburg have confirmed that Brazilian midfielder Diego will move to Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal.

Diego, 28, has been on the verge of an exit since he was fined after storming out of the team hotel last season after being told he was a substitute.

Really excited about this one. Have been a fan of Diego since his days at Bremen, although his career has stuttered in recent times.

From what I've read, Atletico have a €7 mill option to make the transfer permanent.

Mariners Sell Matt Simon To Korea

By Staff Writer
Dec 30 2011 11:36

Central Coast Mariners have sold Matt Simon to Korean K-League outfit Chunnam Dragons in a shock three year deal for the talismanic striker.

Simon, who has made more than 100 Hyundai League appearances for the Mariners, will fly to South Korea next week to link up with his new teammates ahead of the forthcoming K-League season.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Simon will play his final game for the Mariners against Melbourne Victory on January 4 when he will hope to add to his current tally of five goals this season.

Although sad to be leaving his hometown club, Simon, an East Gosford Rams junior, admitted the opportunity to play abroad combined with the Dragons’ offer was simply too good to refuse.

“It has always been a goal of mine to play overseas and this is an opportunity for me to take the next step in my career,” Simon said.

“I’ve had a lot of great memories at the Mariners. I’ve loved playing for the club and I’ve loved playing for the fans.

“Since the start of the A-League the fans have been great to me and I can’t thank them enough. Hopefully I’ll get to play for them again when my time overseas comes to an end.”

A former plasterer, Simon joined the Mariners in 2006 from Central Coast Lightning by former Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna and the hardworking striker hasn’t looked back since.

The striker was selected for the 2008 Beijing Australian Olympic squad by current Mariners boss Graham Arnold. Simon’s form with Central Coast was also acknowledged with two Qantas Socceroos appearances in early 2009.

“I’m forever grateful to Lawrie McKinna and the Mariners for giving me the chance to make it as a professional footballer,” he said.

“Thankfully the club was able to get ‘Arnie’ (Graham Arnold) in to replace Lawrie when he moved into a different role. He knows how each player ticks individually and he’s improved me not only as a player but mentally as well.

“Definitely my highlight was winning the Premiership with the boys in season three, but also last season. We didn’t go all the way but we did tremendously and it was fantastic to be a part of.”

Arnold admitted Simon's presence would be missed both on and off the pitch, but believes his side has the depth to cover Simon’s absence.

“It’s a great reward for a great bloke, a great clubman and a fantastic footballer for the Mariners,” Arnold said.

“Matty was coming off contract and he’s received a great offer from Korea. It’s a wonderful opportunity for him. It’s the A-League, these things happen where players leave mid-term.

"But it won’t be too much of a distraction because we’ve got a lot of depth and it opens up a great opportunity for other players to step up to the mark.”

I really don't know how he will fit in to the system. The club don't like having a big squad so either they've recognised that needs to change or Kroos will partner Schweini and Shaqiri will fill the hole or Robben will be used sparingly.

All I know is we desperately need an attacking spark so I can't wait for it. Should be announced this week according to German press.

It's criminal. According to reports it bumps up to €12m because of appearances and success

Lol to think that 12 months ago Andy Carroll went for a kings random

I thought Miralem Pjanic for €11mil was the bargain of the year but Shaqiri for €2mil less is just absolutely ridiculous.

As for Carroll, he only needs to score 10,000 goals to make his transfer fee worthwhile

After all the bs of the last transfer window (cough Mata cough), I wont believe it until he's photographed for Arsenal.com

It is promising though. Finally it seems that the board has realised that doing transfers in the final week of the transfer window, waiting for all the good meat to go grey, without the player having any pre-season, is a bad idea.

Would be super if it happened though. Big, big fan of Poli.

Princess Poldi had a poor attitude at FCB and could not handle expectation on performance or temperament. FCB take no shit and the golden child whom they desperately wanted for a long time was sent back to a small environment where he can be bigger than the club. He shines playing with the nationalelf stars and only now has played consistent club football at 27 y.o

This move will see whether he is prepared to stop sulking and earn his pay.

Agreed.

For 10-11m pounds, it could be a very nice piece of business.
