He has all that but how can you tell that a guy yet to debut is 1st grade standard?

That said he should be in front of Fuimaono for bench utility but he still needs to show he is upto it

Call it gut feeling.

I actually think he is as talented if not more talented than Bryce. He has the same skill set and is as hard as nails.

Season 2018 was ruined by injury but the talent is unmistakable.

I honestly believe once Jed gets his crack there will be no looking back and he will be a mainstay in our top 17.

Yeah but you have off season surgery.

We lost 3 bench forwards to see who is best to fill those spots. You need to try different things.

General player development training alone won't show up. There is reason why every team does trials

What extra knowledge have we gained from the last 2 weeks?

I just think the season is long enough to try a few things if need be.

That we aren't a top 4 team. What did the other 15 teams learn from their trials?

The rules don't allow to much testing. Friday top 29 squads had to be submitted. That is it.

Game day you only have 8 interchanges and can only have 4 on the bench. So doesn't leave much room to move

He is in a strange position. Those in front of him are young enough to block his path long term and in a couple of seasons the Ball kids from last year will jump him.

My team for round 1 subject to being fit and available would be;

  • Edwards, DWZ, Whare, Blake, Mansour, Maloney, Cleary, Leota, Yeo, JFH, Tamou, Katoa, RCG. Bench May, Cartwright, Sele, Hethrington.

Jed is only 22. I could be wrong but I see a really good player in Jed. He has more upside to his game than many and I just believe if he gets a crack we will not look back.

With a player like Jed the only downside is the coach has to have faith in him and allow him to offload because like Bryce that is a major strength to his game. Take his offload ability away ie instruct him not to offload then you take away his X factor.

Kikau 22
JFH 22
Yeo 24

So we have 2 guys the same age in front of him.

He is one that if we'd have an older roster may push others out but I can't see him staying after his deal expires in 2020

Your right in so much as if he doesn’t break into the Nrl this season then he will be lucky to be with us next year.

I am simply saying I see a player who is versatile and can create opportunities to score points.

Just maybe we have too much solid and not enough X factor that is all I am saying, particularly in the forwards.

Parra 77%
Panthers 75%

Time in Possession
Parra 33:41
Panthers 21:32
Eels completion rate is inflated due to penalties aswell.

As good as they did at controlling possession. The biggest factor in doing so was the penalty count. It gave them more tackles and better field position.

Our discipline was poor obviously. But we were also entitled to penalties we didnt receive which would have given us better field position and a better share of the ball.

There wasnt much upside at all to the trial. Except I guess that we got to test our defence. If we don't defend well in Round 1 after all that tackling practice there's something wrong

Last year we were last in Missed tackles. Last in Penalties conceded (10 a game) and were 11th in completion rate. So our discpline is terrible hopefully we slowly make improvement each week

There is obviously something we are doing as a team that is annoying the refs and causing us to be penalised more than most, as you say hopefully we can improve.
The refs are over sensitive to anything they consider to slow down the play the ball and to teams defending their line.
I hate the current interpretations, it is completely biased to attacking teams and that is why the penalties blow out in games. The more you defend the more likely you are to be penalised.
We have to improve but so do the refs.

We have to improve but so do the refs.

Despite the issues we were:

5th in points scored
4th in line breaks
3rd in tackle breaks
4th in offloads
4th in Try assist

So plenty we did right.

However

1st in penalties conceded
2nd in handling errors
1st in missed tackles (Ivan's coached Tigers 2nd)
12th in completion rate

https://www.nrl.com/stats/teams/?competition=111&season=2018&stat=1000210

So too me we need to fix the discpline regardless of what the refs want

That’s my point, I think trials for any team are pointless. If you can’t get yourself in a position to win the comp & find your best combinations after 26 rounds of NRL, I don’t think 2 half arsed trials in the preseason are going to make any difference.

Not sure that Fish can play on an edge anymore.

He has bulked up massively and probably won't have the agility to mark someone like Moses or Brown in Round 1.

I can see either of those skipping on the outside of him and creating a 3 on 2.

I don’t think Fish can play an edge either, I think you’ll find him in the front row rotation this year

I know they are keen to move Yeo to lock but we are a little skinny in the second row for that to happen this season.

Unless Hetherington, Fuimaono or Cartwright develop considerably this year.

There was a try Parra scored and Fuimaono left a huge gap. So I doubt he is a starter.

Maybe we can get a mid season signing to fill that hole
