It's based on the songs official release to radio, so in Jeff Buckley's case 'Forget Her' was released this year on the Grace Legacy Edition, so it counts for this year. Same goes for the Nirvana track - it was written years ago but was only released in 2002 (?), so thats why it got a run in that years JJJH100.

It's weird that songs like that, written many years ago, can still be eligible for the best song of 2004, Ala` that crappy Nirvana song that people loved about 2 years ago

triple J hottest 100 has been crap ever since "pretty fly for a white guy" won it.

No... that was a few years before when "No Aphrodisiac" by The Sh*tlams got #1...

Originally it was songs from any year and Joy Divisions "Love will tear us apart again" won it every year until Nirvana came along with "Smells Like teen spirit" in 91.
Then they changed it to songs released that year.

Hottest 100 is always pretty damn hard to pick. Of course the money will be put pretty heavily on Franz Ferdinand for "Take me out" but I wouldn't discount these dark horses:

The Polyphonic Spree - Hold me now
Wolfmother - Woman
John Butler Trio - Something's gotta give
Scribe - Not many
ELLIOT SMITH - MEMORY LANE (Can't believe this one hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet!)
The Panda Band - Sleepy little death toll town.

What a dazzling, radiant, glorious, illmatic song this is. Whenever I hear it I start shakin, and if you haven't heard it then God only knows what you're missing. Note to self - must get tickets to their BDO sideshow.

"Take me out" by franz ferdinand will run it real close, missy higgin's scar and one of the john butler trio singles will be up there

use to be a time when all the cure fans voted their back catalogue enmasse on to the top 100, so JJJ changed it to the previous calendar year

What about Pete Murray.

Would Lines, Please or Bail me out be a contender?

Also I think "somebody Told me" will win it.

Is Evermore's song "It's too late" considered?

Is Somewhere only we know by Keane being Considered?

Will Grinspoons "better off alone" and "Hard act to Follow" be considered?

I'd presume that they are all up for contention, but not too sure how they will go.
Hard Act To Follow should do well, as will Evermore's 'Its Too Late'
Somewhere Only We Know is one of my fave songs, but I think it would probably only rate somewhere between #30-70.
