Good episode, best of this series so far. Still not convinced by many of the lead actors (Farrell is good) and I still get confused but the constant jumping around from scene to seemingly unconnected scene.

Farrell is good, Taylor Kitsch has been the surprise package IMO though, I'd never rated him as an actor before this series.

Well he has a certain intensity but imo he's pretty wooden. I don't know if it's the poorly written character or what.

I've found the writing overall to be pretty poor compared to the first series. Vince Vaughan's character says some pretty bizarre stuff at times and the pacing was terrible in the first few episodes.

I've read some season reviews and they have said the ending is pretty poor. This season is very average. Still I would like it to continue more so in the hope they can produce another season one quality show.

bugger. I think the story itself is somewhat unoriginal and not as complex as what Nic Likes to think.

I think there will be at least one more season because I remember reading somewhere Nic had 3 solid storylines (3 seasons) he wanted to do.

I've been enjoying it, not as great as S1 obviously but on its own it's still pretty good.

Its enjoyable but at times its hard to defend.

My thoughts as well, Vince Vaughan is totally miscast in the role.

I think its the writing more than anything. I don't see a problem with his acting. I think all the actors have done well with the content they've been given.

no one here is yet to touch on why Vince's character has been given so much screen time. Its strange. Its meant to be a show about the detectives.

Good ep, the last three have been the best IMO with each better than the last.

So many Twin Peaks overtones this season.

The quality of acting to the last season is utterly sub-par and to be honest the only person who was properly cast was Farrell. I couldn't care less about the characters this season, and that is a vastly different proposition to season 1.

Vince Vaughn is woeful in it. That scene where him and his wife were standing in their living room talking in episode 4 or 5 with faux anger was one of the most cringeworthy bits of television I've ever seen.

This pretty much sums up Vince Vaughn in the show... http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/06/vince-vaughn-is-the-worst-part-of-true-detective-season-2

Season 1 was convoluted, but it was compelling and the actors carried it. Season 2 is even more convoluted, without a compelling story and actors that look lost in their roles.

Oh and the practice 'knife fighting' was laughably bad in the last ep.

Vaughan has blown this season, completely and utterly miscast.

I want to know who else auditioned for the role or if they just picked him right off the bat.

It's getting better on a whole though I reckon. The flashback scenes in the party house felt like a throwback to Season 1. I think this show loses a bit of its appeal if it's completely lacking the supernatural (or at least suggestions of), which so far it seems like it's going to be.

Edit: that article has some good points, especially about 'bad guys' and airtime. I think it only works when the entire show basically revolves around that one character eg. Tony Soprano, Walter White.

Yeah the cult guy was creepy shit but it feels a bit late now, more should have been revealed earlier about Ani's past and Paul's Black Mountain stuff has only been alluded to.

Big bird seems to have been forgotten altogether - I mean this guy shot Ray and they don't even care about who it was?

Only three episodes left to tie it all up.

disagree with these comments but art is subjective anyway. I've enjoyed seeing Farrell and Kitcsh, and even McAdams play dark characters. And most of Vince Vaughn's problems has been the way he's been written. He is a boring character who no one is invested in as it is, let alone running around saying shit like 'we don't have the bandwidth for that' and whatever else he rambles out.

and why the hate on the knife fight practicing?

I think McAdams and Farrel are the best, the other two have some pretty shitty dialogue to contend with but are doing a decent job.

I'll re-quote myself

I never said Vaughn was a bad actor (he isn't a great one either), but the writing for his role is terrible and he was miscast.

Pretty sure there are more believable ways to convey a damaged, independent lead than having a block of wood in an LA apartment which is used for stabbing.

The writing in this season is just flat out poor and the directing is pretty weak as well (no continuity between directors each episode). Last season was directed by a single person, Cary f**kunaga... This season has a different director each episode and it shows. Last season was a 9 out of 10, this one is a 6 at best.

The last 2 eps of season 1 were weak, and they've continued it here. I watch it when I get around to it, in the hope that it improves, season 1 I watched it as soon as I was available and often multiple times during the week to see if I missed anything. The last 3 episodes have been better than the rest, but it's not a good season as it stands.

The knife practice scene pretty much set up what she does to the big Russian guy later on in the ep. The speed and accuracy with which it happened despite her being choked out and high on "Molly" is reflective of someone who has practiced something so much it was just all reflex and muscle memory

Of all the out of place stuff in this show, this was something that actually made a heap of sense imo
