TV rights thread part 4

Well the fans certainly lose out on this deal. Sure the money is great but the tv deal hasn't improved at all and that is my biggest gripe. 4 FTA games from channel 10 would have been ideal.

Channel nine had better be fair dinkum about the affiliated states and if they get out of line Grant had better have the balls to stomp on them unlike David "use it or lose it" Gallop. Plus it doesn't stipulate live in to all states on primary or digital channels. This is the part that concerns me most!

The money component is fine. I'm just pissed off at another five years of mediocrity from the alleged home of rugby league.

....

Yeah that sounds about right. So with internet, new zealand, we would have been a little short of $1B, but the game would have been on a station that would have treated it right, played it all the time, all around the country, live and in HD.

And instead we have gone with the same old shit just to get the money. Just to get 1 billion. just to get close to the AFL. Just to keep the players and clubs happy. f**king f**kKKKKKKKKKK

jesus h mothermerkining merkiny f**king merkin

What a f**king balls-up.

Another positive is that we currently have two less teams than the AFL whilst having a similar amount of money as them. Furthermore they're spending far more to run GCS and GWS than the average AFL club meaning they're burning through that cash faster than we are going to burn through ours.

That's all well and good that while we got similar money to the AFL they also have much more control of their game and a hell of a lot more FTA games than just one a week. Not to mention they also had/have a hell of a lot more money than us to begin with and earn a shitload more in gate receipts annually to fund the two money pits that are the GC and GWS. Some people seem to be under the misconception that these 2 franchises will send them broke but it's just not going to happen as they have plenty of other revenue streams to fund both and then some.

you are seriosly dumb

ten would have got all 8 and on sold 4

for $200 million less

would there have been a 20 round fixed schedule?

and 9 and Fox would have had first and last rights next time meaning no bidding war
There was a bidding war this time, as there would have been next time. F+L bid rights doesent mean there is no bidding war, just that Nine had the last bid. And so what, great deals can be done under that system. Just not by the NRL.

And you dont know that there wouldnt have been a 20 round fixed schedule. There could have been a full season fixed schedule in the rights for all we know.

Your opinion is still based on money rather than the game.
It also smells like "you have to lose one to gain one"
We have to put up with 5 years of more of the same horrible shit just so in 5 years time we MAY and i cant emphasis this enough. We MAY get a better deal for the fans.
Channel 10 offered 800mill and wanted to give 4 LIVE FTA games a week, and we knocked that back for 1 LIVE fta game a week, a fixed schedule which still helps the rich get richer and the idea that first/last bid rights mean something.

We just got f**ked and alot of people seem to be OKAY with that cause we got 1 billion.
I feel like somebody shot the puppy i was gonna get for christmas and instead i get $100.

I feel we have lost the stigma and perception that we as a code can never be worth equal or more than the AFL. If we went 4 TV deals trailing the AFL I think it may of happened forever.

Now the perception hass been broken, we can build from here.

I get what your saying but our biggest problem is money, the AFL own a new indoor stadium... We need to play catch up before we can dictate terms. I feel this deal gives up room to dicate later and meets our current problems that will see greater returns in the future.

Yes I do, thats for $200m less in direct revenue.

However, it would have been a SHITLOAD more in shirt and ground sponsorship for the clubs, who would have been on TVs through the whole country, who would be able to sell their sponsorships as genuinely national brands. This is millions per club per year.

And for the growth of the game its incalculable. It means that anyone, %100 of households, any casual observer, anyone interested, can turn on and watch the game 4 days a week as it can best be shown, in HD, and in primetime.

All this with a big increase in the amount of money, just not quite as big as we might have hoped.

It was a tradeoff, and we traded very poorly.

This is seriously f**ked.

you're guessing. no guarantees

and 9 and Fox would have retained first and last rights

Yeah but instead of cronulla or penrith getting more exposure on FTA games and making it on our own for the first time in a long time. We now have to take this supposed 2.5 million from NRL and be "thankyou boss man. thankyou so much boss".
It keeps the poorer clubs poorer hanging off the teet.
All this is keeping the status, quo. There is no change here, there is no brave new world.

For f**ks sake. Its first/last Bid rights.
The NRL could still say "no we prefer what X is offering".

It seems to be a lot more than that, in this thread anyway.

There was a suggestion earlier that foxtels offer was contingent on 9 being the fta broadcaster.

In other words, if another network offered more cash for the fta component, the ARLC could not choose them+fox as the fox offer would be effectively off the table.

Which is bullshit when the ARLC should be out for the best deal for fans and for finance.

That is why the ability for any party to nuke the deal was wrong. In this case there is a lot more money being tipped in at the top, but for fans there is no change at all.

I don't see why people are whinging about the 20 rds of fixed and 6 yet to be determined. At least it gives us the flexibility to be able to see decent games on FTA come that last month and a half of the comp, be f**ked if I wanna see tigers v bulldogs next year in round 26 and they're sitting both last and 2nd last and the sharks v raiders are 1st v 2nd but resigned to the 2nd game on Saturday night Fox because guess what 'we got a fixed schedule' and who would have thought these 2 teams were gonna kick ass in December 2012.........

Its more than that in this thread because its bullshit the people who think this is a good deal try to put it as a positive.
First/Last Bid rights, fixed broncos night footy, 1 live FTA game and five more years in hell was not worth 200 million.
I don't see why people are whinging about the 20 rds of fixed and 6 yet to be determined.
People are whinging that a QLD team is locked in for one of the FTA games each friday. Not one person has complained about what you think people are complaining about. So perhaps read a little more.

Hands up if you didn't kill yourself when you heard we were getting 1 billion dollars, were no worse off than before, and no longer had to bow to Nine and Fox in future deals.

That's good in theory, but we've had that flexibility since forever, that doesn't stop them dishing out a 13th vs 16th snoozefest on a Friday night

That sums it up very well.

Is it legit that there are no more first/last rights for 9 & fox?

Im not guessing about 4 games on TV live, im not guessing about new sponsorship revenue for the clubs, and im not guessing about the growth prospects of the game among people who would have the game beamed into their home for FREE. We could have had the only sport on TV on Monday nights, now we dont even compete on Saturdays evenings.

And this has all come about because we choose to define ourself against the AFL. We HAVE to have a billion dollar deal because they did. Therefore, the amazing, transformative deal on offer has to wait another 5 years because it doesent quite stack up, dollar wise.

Little brother syndrome has well and truly f**ked us in the ass.

I came pretty close when I heard we could have had 4 live games on FTA with another network

Look I'm not the smartest guy going around, but some of the things I have read in this thread has to be up there with the dumbest things I've ever read on an internet forum - or read anywhere for that matter.

M2D2 and co., thank flying f**k you aren't in charge of our game.
