Absolutely incorrect. No one will put themselves in danger for someone they fear. There will always be a point where that leader loses his men.

Yeah I was hit by my mum's partner until I was big enough to stop him. I've also been beaten by the police for asking a question.
My kids if I'm ever lucky enough to have any will be taught to treat people how they'd like to be treated but no respect your elders nonsense.

I've never understood automatic respect. I can be courteous, because i don't like to be a merkin, but if you are a prick to me, i'll be a prick straight back, regardless of who you are. Got me into a lot of trouble at times.

Respect isn't a skill. Instant obedience and obsequiousness is. You can't practice respect to get beter, same as you can't practice love or hate.

See, courtesy is respect, though. You guys are interpreting respect as blind obedience or fear, which I'd never advocate.

But your own tales of how people behave in your part of the world, AFS, show that basic respect is sorely lacking in our country.

There is a whole lot more to infantry training than killing. Humans know how to kill without military training. Sure, all the skills learned are basically geared to enable you to kill an enemy, but they are also practical skills that are useful in many other areas. The most important part of it is mental. Self discipline, respect, mental toughness, handling adverse situations etc are all invaluable in civilian life. I got heaps out of my 3 years & have managed to not kill or injure anyone since I got out.

On a vaguely related idea I'd also prefer national armies to be completely replaced by a massively expanded UN peacekeeping force. That's another example of an idea of mine that will never happen.

Interventionism could be better justified if done by a global force rather than a handful of countries.
