How important are references on a resume? I realised I don't have any, although there are a couple of decent ones I'm sure I could get.

Very. When I help my dad filter down potential employees for his company, he always tells me to make sure they have references, if they don't, that I shouldn't either bother passing his resume onto him. Not just work related either. Personal, education are all important. Shows more than just "Oh, he's a good worker".

Good luck in sucking up to oil companies so they can give you billions of dollars.

You could always marry Gina Rinehart. But that means...you'd have to go below her equator.

It's more the plus sized goatee that gives you that Amish look.

I'm growing my stubble/shadow at the moment. No more clean shaven. Just doing a trim. Looks much better, especially now with my hair longer.

Just on the Ian Watkins thing people still watch Roman Polanski films. I quite like Chinatown as a film. It is difficult to separate the art from the artist especially when it's an especially abhorrent act.

Just had the meeting with the new boss and looks like my decision has been made for me.

Due to the fact we've got record low student numbers and I opted to extend my contract by six months back in March, they hired a guy to replace me when I left.

They don't need three English teachers, and neither of them are off contract until next year.

I was given the option of going out to one of our partner schools in a rural city, but f**k that. I'd die without some sort of social life.

I'm outta here come August, bitches.

important. i don't hire without ref checks... and make sure they are relevant.. having a teacher or a family friend is fine is you are at high school, but once you are in the workforce you need to have people you have worked with in the past..
Interesting. Any good references to try and get outside of the former/current employer box?

Interesting. Any good references to try and get outside of the former/current employer box?

are you looking to work in the same industry as current?

and if answer is yes, are you:

- not wanting current employer to know as you are currently in your first job?
- not wanting to use prior employer as you left on a bad note? (which can be hard to hide as in some industries it's only about 2-3 degrees of separation)

if you don't want your current employer to know, do you have anyone you used to work with there who has left? ideally someone you have worked in project with or who was senior to you who won't mind giving you a reference?

otherwise, you need to find someone who can vouch for your work - eg are you involved in any sports clubs or the like & help out at all?

but from personal experience, if someone can't give me a prior work referee, that rings a few alarm bells..

I go the neatly trimmed number 2-3 beard and razored head look myself. Had the look for 3 months now.
The mrs doesn't like it.

Do you have any friends in some sort of managerial/team leader position? You could get them to say you did work experience there (if you're desperate)

It's a very mixed feeling, Drew.

Before I'd made the decision to stay, I was kind of looking forward to a few months at home and a break from China. I dig my lifestyle here, but as far as cultures go, China has been my least favourite place I've visited.

But I thought I'd made the mature decision by deciding to take the security over a new adventure, so it was a bit of a punch to the guts to have that taken away from me after I'd come to terms with it.

My over-arcing feeling is excitement though. I haven't been home since last March, so that'll be exciting. Plus there's something thrilling about not knowing what country I'll be living in in 2015.

What it believe work well:
- Academic from Uni if graduated recently. Able to speak on their willingness to learn and apply them selves
- A friend in a business position that can vouch for you as a person, and your positive attitude
- An uncle, Aunty or elder family member that can vouch on your upbringing, maturity and personality while saying he's friendly, approachable and such.

This proves there's more to you then just work. You're social, you're adaptable. You'll fit in, you have a likable personality and so forth.

Work referees are hardly everything. Especially, if you previous work for certain reasons.

See you in Montana!

I've seen more 'good blokes' sacked because they couldn't do the job, than i have seen competent people sacked because they were grumpy pricks..

Q for Misanthrope. What is your retirement plan?

Die young and leave a beautiful corpse.

I don't have one. I don't much care. I don't foresee our generation leaving me so little to worry about as retirement. We'll have bigger fish to fry.

And if I get really desperate, I'll just finish my teaching degree and hate my life until it's time to retire and die.

Yeah, sounds like an emotionally turbulent event. Will pray the next adventure opens up :)

And I'm very keen to catch up with you in August mate. You must come to Sydney for the weekend!
