The real downside to my being home for several months is that it will be complete social celibacy.

I'll be in my parents' village of fifty with them and my three brothers for company. Not terrible company by any stretch, but not the weekly booziness and weekly dating I do here.

My options are:

- Drive to Glen Innes (Pop 6000) where I can drink in an RSL or a shitty dive bar until closing time at midnight. Local girls tend to be either unmarried and pregnant, unmarried with kids, or divorced with kids. Or 16.
- Drive to Armidale (Pop 20,000) where I can drink with college students who can afford to go to bars.

Neither is quite as appealing as the ability to just go out any night of the week here and meet other like-minded travelers to party with.

You from that area originally Mis?

Depends how you define originally. I was born in Merriwa and we moved around a bunch before settling in Ben Lomond in 1995. The family have been there ever since, and I attended high school in Glen Innes and Uni in Armidale.

don't be too quick to bag the small towns. Spent the majority of the last 3.5 years of my life going from one to another and have fond memories off all of them. Also a few locals I had to leave behind that I would have preferred to be around :(

Prior to moving to Newie in 2005 (and it's debatable whether it's a city), I'd only ever lived in small towns:

  • Merriwa
  • Menindee
  • Mallanganee
  • Tibooburra
  • Mudgee
  • Ben Lomond
  • Jennings
  • Armidale
I'm a country boy at heart, but I do like city conveniences.

see what you mean. Even medium sized places that are still considered cities do the job for me (good chance of heading to Darwin for atleast 18 months). Some would consider it a drag but would shit on the places ive had to be in. As long as it is big enough to have an irish pub and a cinemas

Ha! Cinema is a definite must for me in a town. Preferably one that plays movies more than just on a Friday/Saturday night.

I liked Armidale. Small and quiet, but it had a few shopping centres and a cinema that had movies every day. The Uni being there meant there was a pretty good theatre scene too.

I have a serious question.

The stuff that builds up in the corner of your eye when you sleep. What is it called? And where does it come from?

Been having pretty heavy thoughts about this since putting on my mascara about 20 minutes ago.

It's called 'rhuem'. It's a buildup from eye secretions drying out through the night as you sleep.

A sudden increase could be symptomatic of allergies of other eye problems - and going to sleep with makeup on could be one cause.

Its scientific name is goop. It has no purpose other than to remind you you could still be sleeping.

Headed to my interview for the bar management gig in a few hours.

Can I get some fingers crossed that it's offering enough money to make it possible for me to stay here. I'm figuring approximately 10,000RMB or more a month.

So, had the interview with the owner of the bar here who wants me to come on as a bar manager.

- Six days a week
- 3.30pm until close
- Off day cannot be a weekend (obviously)
- Expected to do all usual bar management stuff + help in kitchen + events planning to boost intake
- No health insurance
- Sponsored visa
- Unpaid holidays on request

Obviously, I'm in China and cannot expect a Western salary, but given the above - what should I be asking for? I've been told to name my price.

I'd need to make 12,000rmb ($2000 AU) just to maintain my current lifestyle, as I'd lose my free apartment and have to find a new one (roughly $700 a month).

At a minimum, I'd want 20,000RMB ($3450) to justify giving up the only facets of my life here I like (social life and running my events business), and some have suggested settling for no less than 30,000 ($5100) given the hours and requirements.

Would love the thoughts of those with some hospitality experience.

Has nothing to do with hospitality experience. Has everything to do with where you want to go.

How many hours a week?

I make $23/hour weekdays, 27.50 saturday, 32 sunday, 46 public holidays.

Assuming that's say 8 hours a day for you, it'd be $4850 a month. I'm not a manager, but I do close the club alot of the shifts (but then i get a few extra little perks chucked in for hours/laundry/closing).

Bar manager makes a fair bit more I suspect. But this is Australian wages as well, which I gather are amongst the best in the world (which makes sense, given how high cost of living is).
